Chapter 9: The Brother Who Destroyed Everything
The door opened slowly.
Too slowly.
The kind of slow that made every second feel like an hour.
Michael stood in front of us.
I had never seen him like that before.
Not the powerful businessman.
Not the billionaire whose name was known across the city.
Just a man standing between danger and his family.
Alexander Bennett stepped inside.
He looked older than Michael.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
A calm expression.
The kind of face people trusted.
The kind of face that made betrayal harder to believe.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to Michael.
Then to Ethan.
Then to Noah.
Finally, they stopped on me.
“Lily.””
The way he said my name made my skin crawl.
Like he had known me for years.
Like I was just another piece in a game he had been playing.
Michael’s voice was cold.
“You’re not supposed to be here.””
Alexander smiled.
“Neither are they.””
His eyes moved to Ethan.
The boy immediately stepped closer to me.
I noticed.
He was scared.
But he didn’t run.
That told me everything about what he had survived.
Michael took one step forward.
“You took my daughter’s son.””
Alexander tilted his head.
“Careful.””
His voice remained calm.
“You’re making accusations without understanding the situation.””
I stared at him.
“You stole a child.””
His eyes shifted toward me.
“And you must be Lily.””
I didn’t answer.
Alexander smiled slightly.
“You have Amelia’s courage.””
My stomach twisted.
“Don’t say her name.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A flash of irritation.
Then it disappeared.
“Your mother was always emotional.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Alexander looked at his brother.
“What?””
“You don’t get to talk about her.””
A strange silence followed.
Because there was history between them.
Years of it.
Painful years.
Alexander sighed.
“I always knew this day would come.””
Michael stared.
“What day?””
“The day Amelia’s children returned.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You’re the reason she was scared.””
Alexander looked at him.
“I’m the reason you survived.””
The words shocked me.
Ethan’s face changed.
“What?””
Alexander walked further inside.
“You think your mother protected you?””
He laughed softly.
“She hid you because she was afraid of the truth.””
Michael’s voice became dangerous.
“Stop.””
But Alexander continued.
“Ethan, your mother never told you why she separated you from Lily.””
Ethan looked uncertain.
I felt his hand tighten around mine.
“What are you talking about?””
Alexander smiled.
“Ask your sister.””
Everyone looked at me.
My heart dropped.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know anything.””
Alexander watched me carefully.
“Your mother never told you about the night Ethan disappeared?””
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at him.
“No.””
Alexander smiled.
“Of course she didn’t.””
Michael moved closer.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
Alexander looked at him.
“You spent fourteen years believing Amelia was innocent in everything.””
Michael’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you saying?””
Alexander reached into his coat.
Michael immediately reacted.
“Don’t move.””
Alexander stopped.
Then slowly pulled out a small photograph.
He held it up.
“This.””
My breath caught.
Because I recognized the place.
The old Bennett company building.
The night my mother disappeared.
Michael stared at the photo.
“Where did you get that?””
Alexander looked at him.
“I was there.””
The room went silent.
Michael’s expression changed.
“You were there that night?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Alexander looked almost disappointed.
“Because someone had to clean up Amelia’s mistakes.””
I felt anger explode inside me.
“You’re disgusting.””
Alexander looked at me.
“Careful, Lily.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“But I’m not afraid of you.””
For a moment, he studied me.
Then he smiled.
“Exactly like her.””
Michael looked at the photograph.
“What happened that night?””
Alexander sighed.
“You still don’t remember?””
Michael froze.
“What?””
Alexander stepped closer.
“You really don’t remember.””
A strange fear crossed Michael’s face.
“What are you talking about?””
Alexander looked around the apartment.
“Fourteen years ago, Amelia came to your office with evidence.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“She was going to expose everything.””
“Yes.””
“And you argued.””
Michael looked away.
“Yes.””
Alexander smiled.
“Then you left.””
The words hung there.
Michael’s face changed.
“What?””
“You left Amelia alone.””
My heart sank.
Because I remembered what Michael had told me.
He had told Amelia to leave.
Alexander continued.
“And after that, she met someone.””
Michael’s voice became quiet.
“Who?””
Alexander looked at Ethan.
“Your mother.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Alexander smiled.
“She was going to take the evidence somewhere safe.””
Michael stared.
“She called me.””
The room went cold.
“You?””
Alexander nodded.
“Because she thought I would help.””
I felt sick.
“What did you do?””
Alexander didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Ethan.
“I saved one child.””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“You took me.””
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you were proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Alexander looked at Michael.
“That Amelia had a reason to destroy the company.””
Michael stepped forward.
“I don’t understand.””
Alexander smiled.
“You never did.””
He pointed at the notebook.
“Amelia discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
Alexander’s expression became darker.
“That the company was never yours.””
Silence.
Michael stared.
“What?””
“Your father built it. Your family built it. But you were always the favorite.””
Alexander’s voice became bitter.
“Everything went to you.””
Michael looked shocked.
“You did this because you were jealous?””
Alexander laughed.
“Jealous?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His eyes hardened.
“I was correcting an injustice.””
I stared at him.
“You destroyed a family because you thought you deserved more?””
Alexander looked at me.
“I destroyed nothing.””
His voice became cold.
“I gave everyone what they deserved.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You’re insane.””
Alexander smiled.
“Maybe.””
Then he looked at Ethan.
“But I was right about one thing.””
Ethan stepped back.
“What?””
Alexander pointed at him.
“He knows where Amelia hid the final evidence.””
My heart stopped.
Ethan looked confused.
“I don’t know anything.””
Alexander smiled.
“You do.””
“No.””
“You were there when she hid it.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I was little.””
“Yes.””
Alexander’s voice softened.
“Too young to remember.””
Then he looked at Michael.
“But old enough to lead us to it.””
Michael’s face changed.
“No.””
Alexander moved quickly.
Not toward us.
Toward the notebook.
Michael grabbed him.
The two men struggled.
For the first time, Alexander lost his calm.
“You always thought you were better than me!””
Michael pushed him back.
“And you always thought hurting people would make you powerful!””
The apartment filled with chaos.
I grabbed Ethan and pulled him away.
“Where did your mother hide something?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“Think.””
He closed his eyes.
Then suddenly froze.
“Wait.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face changed.
“Mom said something.””
“What?””
He looked at the necklace around my neck.
The key.
“She said the key wasn’t for a lock.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan touched the key.
“She said it was for remembering.””
The fighting stopped.
Michael looked over.
“What did you say?””
Ethan pointed.
“Mom said the answer wasn’t hidden somewhere.””
His voice shook.
“It was hidden in someone.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked at the key.
Then the bracelet.
The bracelet with the letter M.
The necklace my mother left.
Two pieces.
Two secrets.
Suddenly, I understood.
My mother hadn’t hidden the truth in a place.
She had hidden it in us.
A memory.
A person.
A child.
Ethan looked at me.
“Lily.””
“What?””
He whispered:
“I think I remember.””
My heart raced.
“Remember what?””
He looked terrified.
“The night Mom disappeared.””
Before anyone could ask more, the apartment window shattered.
Everyone turned.
A man in the shadows outside raised a camera.
Then disappeared.
Michael rushed to the window.
Too late.
On the floor was a small envelope.
Michael picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
The five of us.
Taken minutes earlier.
And written on the back:
*The final secret belongs to Amelia’s daughter.*
I looked at the words.
Then at Michael.
Because I finally understood.
Alexander hadn’t come here for Ethan.
May you like
He hadn’t come here for Noah.
He had come here for me.
