Chapter 9: The Woman Who Chose the Experiment
For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.
The room was full of noise.
The rain outside.
The hum of the emergency lights.
The breathing of every person standing around me.
But one sentence cut through all of it.
Your mother.
I stared at Adrian.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Not as an argument.
As a refusal.
Because some truths are too impossible to accept all at once.
“My mother died when I was a child.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I know.””
“Then don’t say things you can’t prove.””
His expression didn’t change.
“I wish I couldn’t.””
Behind him, Ethan stood frozen.
The boy looked between us.
Then toward the entrance.
That was when I noticed the shadow.
Someone was standing in the doorway.
A woman.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
And she looked at me like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.
My heart stopped.
Not because I recognized her.
Because some part of me did.
A memory moved through my mind.
A hand holding mine.
A voice singing softly.
A woman whispering:
“Don’t be afraid, Aaron.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Aaron.””
Nobody had ever said my name like that.
Like it belonged to them.
Like they had been saying it every night for years.
Marcus moved in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
Then back at me.
“My name is Claire Cole.””
My mother’s name.
The name on my old birth certificate.
The name I had only heard from other people.
Because I had no memories of her.
No photographs I trusted.
No voice I remembered.
Just a blank space.
“You’re dead,” I whispered.
She looked down.
“I was supposed to be.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“What is happening?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“Everything you were told was designed to protect the experiment.””
I felt anger rising.
“Experiment.””
I held up the folder.
“Is that what I was?””
Her face broke.
“No.””
“Then what was I?””
She took a step forward.
“Mine.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
I hated that.
I hated that a stranger could say one word and make something inside me hurt.
“You left me.””
Her expression changed.
Pain.
“I tried to save you.””
“You changed my life.””
“Yes.””
She didn’t deny it.
That almost made it worse.
“I did.””
Marcus lowered his weapon slightly.
“Claire, you need to explain.””
She nodded.
“I will.””
Her eyes moved to Ethan.
“And I will explain why he was never supposed to be found.””
Ethan stepped closer to me.
The boy was still afraid.
But he was listening.
Claire looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
“You don’t get to say that,” he whispered.
Her face tightened.
“I know.””
“You took my parents.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“You let me think they forgot me.””
“I know.””
The pain in his voice filled the room.
Nobody interrupted.
Because sometimes an apology is too small for what happened.
Claire looked back at me.
“The project began before you were born.””
I said nothing.
“They were studying memory transfer.””
“Who are they?””
She looked toward the files.
“People with money. Power. Influence.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Her voice became heavier.
“It isn’t.””
She walked closer.
“My research was supposed to help people recover lost memories.””
Marcus looked skeptical.
“And then?””
“Then they realized memories could be copied.””
My stomach tightened.
“They wanted to create people who could inherit knowledge.””
Adrian looked away.
Claire noticed.
“You know what happened next.””
He nodded.
“I do.””
I looked between them.
“You worked together.””
Adrian answered quietly.
“Yes.””
The admission shocked me.
“You kidnapped children together.””
“No.””
His voice was immediate.
“We studied them.””
“That’s supposed to make it better?””
“No.””
He looked down.
“It doesn’t.””
Claire continued.
“At first, I believed I could control it.””
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“You believed you could control people turning children into experiments?””
Her eyes filled.
“I believed I could destroy it from inside.””
“Did you?””
She looked at Ethan.
“No.””
That honesty stopped me.
She wasn’t trying to excuse herself.
She was admitting failure.
“The night of the Morgan fire…”
My body reacted before my mind did.
The fire.
Again.
Claire noticed.
“You remember.””
“Pieces.””
She nodded.
“That’s enough.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I need all of it.””
Claire took a breath.
“The Morgan house wasn’t just a home.””
She looked at the folders.
“It was a storage location.””
“For what?””
“Records.””
The files.
“The original identities of every child.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“You hid evidence there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew they would eventually come for me.””
I looked at her.
“And Ethan?””
“He was the last child connected to the project.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Why me?””
Claire’s expression softened.
“Because you remembered everything.””
The boy looked down.
“I didn’t remember my parents.””
“You remembered the truth.””
She looked at him.
“That was more dangerous.””
A sound came from outside.
Vehicles.
Multiple.
Everyone turned.
Marcus moved toward the window.
“Oh no.””
I looked.
Black SUVs.
Again.
But this time there were more.
Claire’s face changed.
“They’re here.””
Adrian grabbed Ethan’s shoulder.
“Move.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
Adrian looked at me.
“They’ll kill him.””
“Who?””
Claire answered.
“The people who funded everything.””
The station doors shook.
Someone was trying to get inside.
Marcus looked at me.
“We need a plan.””
I stared at the people around me.
Adrian.
Claire.
Noah.
Ethan.
Everyone connected to the truth.
Everyone who had lied.
Everyone who had protected something.
I looked at Ethan.
“Did you know?””
He looked confused.
“Know what?””
“That I was connected to this.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then quietly:
“I only knew you were the person who tried to save me.””
That sentence hurt.
Because I didn’t know if I deserved it.
The doors shook again.
Harder.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Aaron.””
I looked at her.
“There is one thing you still don’t know.””
“What?””
Her eyes moved to Noah.
Then back to me.
“The person you saw burning the Morgan house…”
My heart stopped.
“Wasn’t Noah.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“Then who was it?””
Claire swallowed.
“You.””
Everyone looked at me.
Noah’s expression changed.
Adrian looked away.
Even Ethan went still.
I shook my head.
“No.””
Claire’s voice broke.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
“You weren’t trying to kill him.””
I stared.
“Then what was I doing?””
She looked at the folder in my hands.
“You were trying to destroy the evidence.””
A pause.
“And when you realized Ethan was still inside…”
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
Claire whispered:
“You ran back into the fire.””
The memories hit.
Not like flashes this time.
Like a door opening.
Smoke.
Heat.
Ethan crying.
My hands pulling him away.
A man behind me.
A gunshot.
A choice.
I grabbed the table to stay standing.
“But I burned it.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because you knew the only way to stop them was to erase everything.””
The station doors finally broke open.
Armed men flooded inside.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Everyone moved.
And in the chaos, Claire grabbed my hand.
She pressed something small into my palm.
A key.
“Go to the room beneath the Morgan house.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because the final file is there.””
“What file?””
She looked at Ethan.
“The one proving who created you.””
The armed men moved closer.
Claire pushed me toward the back exit.
“And Aaron…”
I turned.
“What?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“The person who ordered your creation…”
A pause.
“The person who changed your life…”
She looked toward the folder.
“Was not me.””
I froze.
“Then who?””
Her face turned pale.
“Your father.””
And from somewhere outside the station, a voice called my name.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow recognized.
“Aaron.””
May you like
The voice continued.
“Come home.””
