Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Cost Me Everything
“Don't call them,” my father repeated.
I stood beside the gate, staring at the email on my phone. Behind him, the blue sports car glittered beneath the afternoon sun, its balloons drifting lazily above the roof. The celebration had dissolved into an uncomfortable silence, but the evidence of what my family had done remained scattered across the hood.
I looked up at Darius.
“Why are you afraid of me calling a financial institution?””
“I'm not afraid of that.””
“Then move out of my way.””
He stepped aside, but his hands trembled.
“Nia, please. Let me speak to them first. There are details you don't understand.””
“That's what you've been saying all afternoon.””
“I know.””
“You said the college fund was safe. You said the withdrawals were temporary. You said the house needed protecting. Then I found out my name was on paperwork I didn't understand.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I never intended to hurt you.””
I gripped my phone.
“Intentions don't explain why somebody else's name is on a financial document.””
He lowered his head.
I pressed the number in the email.
The call rang four times before a woman answered.
“Good afternoon. Hawthorne Financial Services. This is Denise speaking. How may I help you?””
My father took a step toward me.
I turned away.
“My name is Nia Carter. I received an email about an account connected to my father's property. It says my name appears on signed documents.””
“Certainly, Ms. Carter. Can you provide the reference number in the email?””
I read it aloud.
There was a pause. I heard keyboard clicks in the background.
“Thank you. Before I discuss the account, I need to verify your identity. Can you confirm your date of birth and mailing address?””
I answered her questions.
Another pause followed.
“Thank you for verifying your identity,” Denise said.
“I can confirm that your name appears in the supporting documentation for a secured lending arrangement associated with the property you mentioned.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the documents we have on file identify you as a supporting party in relation to certain financial resources.””
“Am I responsible for the loan?””
“I can't make a legal determination about your obligations during this call. I can tell you that your signature appears on a supporting acknowledgment, and the file contains references to an account associated with your name.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did I agree to let them use my college savings?””
“I'm unable to interpret the legal effect of the document for you. You can request a complete copy of the records and seek independent legal advice.””
“Can you tell me how much money is involved?””
Denise hesitated.
“I can confirm that the original secured arrangement was larger than the amount reflected in the transfer you described in your inquiry. I would need to review the file before providing any further details.””
My father made a strained sound behind me.
I turned and saw him staring at the ground.
“What happens if I didn't understand what I signed?”” I asked.
“You should raise that concern formally. I can note that you dispute your understanding of the document and request that the relevant records be preserved.””
“Yes. Please do that.””
“I'll record your concern. Would you like me to send the document request procedure to your verified email address?””
“Yes.””
“Very well. You should receive the instructions shortly.””
I thanked her and ended the call.
For several seconds, I simply stood there.
My father approached cautiously.
“What did they say?””
I looked at him.
“They said my name is on a secured lending arrangement.””
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When? After the lender came to take the house? After they told me I owed money I never knew existed?””
“That's not how it works.””
“Then tell me how it works!””
He looked toward the patio.
Vanessa had appeared in the doorway. She watched us with her arms folded, her bright-red dress still immaculate despite the afternoon's chaos.
My father lowered his voice.
“The original plan was to use the house as security while we reorganized our finances. Your account was listed as supporting documentation because I believed the lender needed evidence of available family assets.””
“Did I agree to that?””
“You signed the acknowledgment.””
“That wasn't my question.””
He looked at me, unable to answer.
I felt my eyes sting.
“You asked me to trust you.””
“I know.””
“You told me it was routine paperwork.””
“I know.””
“You watched me sign something I didn't understand.””
His voice broke.
“I thought I could fix everything before it became a problem for you.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't protect me from the problem, Dad. You made me part of it without telling me.””
Vanessa walked down the patio steps.
“Darius, this has gone far enough.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you know my name was on the documents?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
The admission was quiet, but unmistakable.
I stared at her.
“You knew I didn't understand what I was signing?””
“I knew your father was handling the paperwork.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Vanessa tightened her jaw.
“I wasn't responsible for explaining every document to you.””
“No. But you were responsible for telling the truth when I asked what happened to my money.””
She looked away.
I pulled up the email again.
“I've requested the records. I'm also getting independent legal advice.””
My father stepped forward.
“Please don't rush into anything.””
“I'm not rushing. I'm finally looking.””
He reached toward me, then let his hand fall.
Vanessa's phone vibrated.
She checked the screen and went rigid.
“What is it?”” my father asked.
She didn't answer.
He stepped closer.
“Vanessa?””
She locked the phone and slipped it into her handbag.
“Nothing.””
I watched her.
“Who was that?””
“It's none of your business.””
I nodded slowly.
“Fine. I'll find out what I can from the records.””
She looked at my father, and for one fleeting moment, the anger disappeared from her face. What replaced it was fear.
Then she turned toward the house.
Marcus appeared behind her, still holding the sports-car keys.
“Mom, we need to talk,” he said.
“Not now.””
“You told me Dad was buying the car with his own money.””
“Marcus, go inside.””
“Was that money really Nia's?””
Vanessa stopped.
My father looked between them.
I remained beside the gate, my phone clutched in my hand.
For the first time, Marcus wasn't looking at the car.
He was looking at his mother.
And whatever he saw in her expression made him take a step backward.
“Mom,” he whispered, “what else have you been lying about?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Then Marcus reached into his pocket, pulled out his own phone, and announced that he had received a message from the dealership.
The down payment had cleared.
But the financing paperwork for the car contained a reference number he didn't recognize.
A reference number that matched the one on my email.
My father went completely still.
May you like
Vanessa's face turned white.
And Marcus looked at me as if he had just realized the car sitting behind him might be evidence of something much worse than a stolen college fund.
