Chapter 2: The Man Who Called First

Ethan stood frozen in the kitchen.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

He just stared at the empty doorway where Claire had disappeared.

The sunlight still poured into the room.

The expensive appliances still hummed quietly.

The clock on the wall still ticked.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Except his wife was gone.

And her wedding ring was sitting beside fifteen dollars.

At first, Ethan told himself she was trying to make a point.

Claire was emotional.

Pregnancy hormones.

Fear.

That was what he told himself.

Because accepting the truth would mean admitting something he had spent months avoiding.

She knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

He walked slowly toward the island.

His eyes landed on the ring.

The small diamond caught the sunlight.

He remembered buying it.

Not because it was the biggest or most expensive ring in the store.

Because Claire had laughed when she saw it and said, “It doesn’t matter how much it costs. It matters who puts it on my finger.””

Back then, he loved that about her.

She believed in meaning.

She believed in loyalty.

She believed people kept their promises.

Ethan had once admired that.

Now it made him uncomfortable.

Because people like Claire noticed when something changed.

And Ethan had changed.

He picked up the ring.

His fingers closed around it.

“Claire…”

For the first time that morning, his voice sounded uncertain.

Then he heard the front door open.

He looked up quickly.

A man stood outside.

The driver.

Older. Around fifty. Wearing a dark jacket.

Behind him was a nurse in blue scrubs, holding a medical bag.

Ethan frowned.

Why was a nurse here?

The driver looked past Ethan toward the kitchen.

“Is Mrs. Whitmore inside?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

The nurse’s expression changed.

She already knew something was wrong.

“Where is she?”” the nurse asked.

“She just left.””

The nurse exchanged a glance with the driver.

Not confusion.

Concern.

Ethan noticed.

“What?””

The nurse stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore, I need to speak with you.””

Something about her tone made his stomach tighten.

“She called the hospital?””

The nurse looked at him carefully.

“No.””

That answer surprised him.

“Then why are you here?””

The nurse took a breath.

“Because you called first.””

Ethan felt his face lose color.

“What?””

The nurse held his gaze.

“You contacted emergency services earlier.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Earlier.

Ethan knew exactly what she meant.

But he couldn’t understand how she knew.

He looked toward the door.

Toward the driveway.

Toward the direction Claire had gone.

The nurse continued.

“You reported that your pregnant wife was in distress.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I was trying to help.””

The driver said nothing.

But his eyes told Ethan he wasn’t convinced.

The nurse looked around the kitchen.

The hospital bag.

The money.

The ring.

She noticed everything.

And Ethan noticed her noticing.

“Where is Mrs. Whitmore now?”” she asked.

Ethan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the answer sounded terrible even in his own head.

She was walking to a car.

She was going to the hospital without him.

She was going to give birth without him.

And everyone who saw the situation understood why.

Except the man who caused it.

“She left,” Ethan finally said.

The nurse’s face softened.

Not with sympathy for him.

With sympathy for Claire.

“Is she safe?””

“Yes.””

“Is she alone?””

Ethan looked away.

The silence was enough.

The nurse stepped outside.

Ethan followed.

From the driveway, he could see Claire.

She was standing beside the driver’s car.

One hand held her belly.

The other rested on the open door.

The driver was speaking gently to her.

The nurse approached her carefully.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

Claire looked up.

Her face changed when she saw the nurse.

Relief.

But also sadness.

Because the person who came to help her was a stranger.

Not her husband.

The nurse touched her shoulder.

“I’m glad we found you.””

Claire nodded.

Then her eyes moved past the nurse.

Back to Ethan.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Ethan expected anger.

He expected shouting.

He expected her to accuse him.

But she didn’t.

That was what frightened him most.

She looked at him like she had already mourned the person she thought he was.

“Claire…”

His voice cracked.

She looked away.

The nurse opened the car door wider.

“Let’s get you to the hospital.””

Claire stepped forward.

Then she stopped.

She looked back once more.

“I hope someday you understand what you almost lost.””

Ethan stood there.

Unable to respond.

Because deep down, he knew something he didn’t want to admit.

Claire wasn’t leaving because she was angry.

She was leaving because she was done.

And as the driver closed the door and the car pulled away, Ethan looked down at the wedding ring still in his hand.

May you like

For the first time in years, he felt powerless.

Because the woman he thought would always stay had finally chosen herself.
