Chapter 7: The Lie We Wanted to Believe

The silence after the call was louder than anything I had ever heard.

I stared at the phone screen.

The call had ended.

But Sarah’s voice remained.

*Don’t trust Daniel.*

Three words.

Three words that turned the entire world upside down.

Daniel stood in front of me, his face unreadable.

“Maria.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time since he found me outside my bakery…

I didn’t know what to see when I looked at him.

The little boy who cried over a hot dog.

The man who came back fifteen years later.

The person who promised to protect me.

Or someone who had been hiding something.

“Say something,” he whispered.

I looked away.

“I don’t know what to say.””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“You believe her?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt him.

I could see it.

But I couldn’t take it back.

Because too many impossible things had happened in too little time.

A fake statement.

A hidden storage unit.

A secret my husband carried.

A payment record with Sarah’s name.

And now this.

Evelyn stepped between us.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Calm down?””

“Yes.””

“My entire life has been about finding the person who destroyed my family.””

His voice became sharper.

“And now the person who might know the truth tells Maria not to trust me?””

Evelyn didn’t flinch.

“Which is exactly why we cannot react emotionally.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Sarah standing beside Anthony.

My best employee.

My friend.

A person I had trusted with my home.

With my business.

With my life.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“What?””

“Did you know Sarah was connected to my husband before today?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately?

I hated myself for thinking that.

He noticed.

“You really think I would hide that from you?””

“I don’t know anymore.””

His face fell.

The words hurt both of us.

Because they were true.

I didn’t know anymore.

Daniel stepped back.

“When I was eight years old, you looked at me like I was worth saving.””

My eyes filled.

“Daniel…”

“I spent fifteen years remembering that moment.””

He pointed toward the documents.

“I built everything I have because I wanted to become someone who could help people the way you helped me.””

His voice shook.

“And now you think I’m the person who hurt you?””

I looked down.

“I don’t know who hurt me.””

That was the truth.

And somehow, that was worse.

For the next hour, we searched everything inside the storage unit.

Not because we trusted each other.

Because we needed answers.

Daniel found more documents.

Old emails printed on paper.

Bank transfers.

Construction reports.

Every piece pointed toward the same thing.

Richard Cole had spent years protecting himself.

But there was something else.

Something hidden beneath everything.

Evelyn opened a small notebook.

“Look at this.””

Daniel walked over.

“What is it?””

“Anthony’s notes.””

I moved closer.

The handwriting was messy.

Rushed.

Like he wrote quickly because he didn’t have time.

The pages were filled with names.

Dates.

Short sentences.

Then one line caught my attention.

*Sarah knows where the original files are.*

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked at me.

“She knew.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Maria.””

“No.””

I grabbed the notebook.

“She helped me after Anthony died.””

Daniel said nothing.

“She stayed with me when I couldn’t get out of bed.””

I remembered those days.

The funeral.

The empty house.

The silence.

Sarah sitting beside me while I cried.

“She told me I wasn’t alone.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Maybe she meant it.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe?””

He looked away.

“Maria, people can care about someone and still make terrible choices.””

I hated that he was right.

Because that was the most painful possibility.

That Sarah wasn’t a monster.

That she was human.

That maybe she had been trapped.

Or maybe she had betrayed me.

We left the storage unit before sunset.

Nobody spoke much.

The city looked the same.

But I felt different.

Like someone had taken the life I knew and shaken it until nothing fit anymore.

When we reached the hotel, Daniel stopped outside my door.

“I’ll stay somewhere else tonight.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you need space.””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to tell him I trusted him.

But the words wouldn’t come.

And he noticed.

He nodded.

“I understand.””

Before he left, he said something quietly.

“Maria?””

I looked up.

“If I wanted to hurt you…”

He paused.

“I had fifteen years to do it.””

Then he walked away.

That night, I barely slept.

Around midnight, there was a knock on my door.

My heart jumped.

“Who is it?””

No answer.

I grabbed the phone.

Then I heard a voice.

“Maria?””

Sarah.

I opened the door.

She stood there soaked from the rain.

Her face was pale.

She looked terrified.

“Sarah?””

She stepped inside quickly.

“Close the door.””

I did.

Then I stared at her.

“You have a lot to explain.””

“I know.””

“Your name is on a payment record.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Anthony wrote that you knew where the files were.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

My anger finally broke through.

“Then tell me the truth!””

Sarah looked at me.

And started crying.

“I was nineteen.””

I froze.

“What?””

“When I met Anthony.””

She sat down.

“I wasn’t working for you yet.””

I stared.

“Then how?””

Sarah wiped her face.

“Because Anthony found me first.””

The room went silent.

“Explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“My father worked for Richard Cole.””

I felt cold.

“He was one of his employees.””

Sarah nodded.

“He knew what Richard was doing.””

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“He wanted to expose him.””

I listened.

“Richard found out.””

“What happened?””

Sarah swallowed.

“My father disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“Like Thomas Reed?””

She nodded.

“He was Thomas Reed’s friend.””

The pieces started connecting.

“Then why is your name on the payment record?””

Sarah’s hands shook.

“Because Richard found me after my father disappeared.””

“And?””

“He offered me money.””

My heart sank.

“You took it?””

She cried harder.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“Sarah.””

“I was nineteen, Maria!””

Her voice broke.

“I was scared. I had no family. No money. Richard told me he could destroy my life if I didn’t help him.””

“Help him do what?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Find Anthony’s evidence.””

The room became silent.

My chest tightened.

“You betrayed him.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

“But I didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

“That Anthony had hidden everything from Richard.””

She looked at me.

“He knew I was being forced.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Anthony knew.””

Sarah reached into her bag.

Pulled out a small envelope.

“He found out Richard was using me.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

My eyes filled.

“What happened after?””

Sarah’s face changed.

Pain.

Guilt.

Regret.

“I tried to warn him.””

“About Richard?””

She nodded.

“But I was too late.””

I whispered:

“Sarah…”

She looked at me.

“I didn’t kill Anthony.””

I didn’t answer.

“I swear.””

“Then who did?””

Sarah reached into the envelope.

Pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of Anthony.

Standing outside a building.

Talking to someone.

Someone whose face was partly hidden.

But I recognized the clothes.

The posture.

The expensive coat.

Richard Cole.

And beside Richard…

Another person.

Someone who made my heart stop.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

Sarah looked at me.

“The person who betrayed Anthony wasn’t me.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Then who?””

Sarah whispered:

“The person who told Richard where Anthony hid the evidence…”

May you like

She looked toward the door.

“…was Daniel’s father.””
