Chapter 8 - THE FATHER WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

The phone was still pressed against his ear.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Because the voice on the other end belonged to someone who should never have been able to call him.

Someone whose death certificate had been signed.

Someone whose funeral he attended.

Someone whose name was carved into a family memorial.

“Michael…”

The voice came again.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Michael’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?”

A long silence followed.

Then:

“You already know.”

Michael stopped breathing.

Because he did.

He knew before his mind accepted it.

“Claire?”

The line went silent.

And then the person answered.

“Yes.”

Michael dropped into his chair.

The room suddenly felt unreal.

Claire.

His wife.

The woman he buried.

The woman whose photographs he looked at every night.

The woman whose death destroyed their family.

Alive.

Somewhere.

Calling him.

“No.”

The word escaped his mouth.

Not because he didn’t believe it.

Because believing it meant accepting something impossible.

“You’re dead.”

Claire’s voice trembled.

“I know.”

“Everyone said—”

“I know what everyone said.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Six months.

Six months of grief.

Six months of raising children who missed their mother.

Six months believing he had lost her forever.

“Where are you?”

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

“I can’t tell you.”

Michael stood.

“What do you mean you can’t tell me?”

“Because if you know, they will know.”

His anger rose.

“Who?”

A pause.

“The same people who tried to destroy us.”

Michael walked toward the window.

The city lights blurred through the glass.

“Claire, I saw what happened.”

“No.”

Her voice became urgent.

“You saw what they wanted you to see.”

Michael froze.

“What are you saying?”

“I survived the accident.”

The words hit him like a wave.

“You survived?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you come home?”

Silence.

A painful silence.

“Because I was told Ella and Noah would be next.”

Michael’s entire body went cold.

“What?”

“Michael…”

Claire’s voice broke.

“I was unconscious for two days after the crash.”

“When I woke up, I heard them talking.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

Michael gripped the desk.

“She was there?”

“Yes.”

Claire explained.

The accident was not random.

Her car had been forced off the road.

She survived.

Barely.

But while she was in the hospital, she overheard conversations.

Vanessa.

Daniel Cross.

And another person.

Someone who controlled everything.

“Who?”

Claire whispered:

“Your brother.”

Michael went silent.

“Jonathan?”

“Yes.”

Michael felt anger rising.

But Claire continued.

“Listen to me.”

Her voice became serious.

“Jonathan was not the beginning.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means he was also being used.”

Michael frowned.

“By who?”

Before Claire could answer, the call suddenly cut.

Michael stared at the phone.

“Claire?”

Nothing.

The line was dead.

He immediately called back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

For the first time in months, Michael felt something stronger than anger.

Hope.

Claire was alive.

And if she was alive…

the entire story had to be rewritten.

The next morning, Michael met his investigator.

He placed the phone recording on the table.

“I need you to find where this call came from.”

The investigator looked surprised.

“Who was that?”

Michael looked at him.

“My wife.”

A long silence.

“Sir…”

“She’s alive.”

The investigator spent twelve hours tracing the signal.

Finally, he found something.

A private medical facility.

A small rehabilitation center outside the city.

Owned by a company connected to…

Daniel Cross.

Michael arrived that evening.

The building was almost empty.

Too quiet.

He entered with security.

And found her.

Claire was sitting near a window.

Thinner.

Paler.

But alive.

When she saw Michael…

she covered her mouth.

Neither of them moved.

For six months, Michael imagined this moment.

He imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But when he finally saw her…

he only walked forward.

And held her.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Because some moments were too big for words.

Finally Michael whispered:

“Why didn’t you come home?”

Claire cried.

“Because I thought staying away was the only way to protect you.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let Ethan believe he lost his mother.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Michael stepped back.

“Tell me everything.”

And Claire did.

Before her accident, Claire discovered Daniel Cross had been moving money from her family trust.

She confronted him.

That was when she learned the truth.

Daniel was not protecting the estate.

He was preparing to take control of it.

But Daniel was not alone.

Jonathan was involved.

Vanessa was involved.

And someone else…

someone above them…

was funding everything.

“Who?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t know his full plan.”

“But I know his name.”

Michael waited.

Claire whispered:

“Richard Blackwood.”

Michael froze.

Richard Blackwood.

His father.

The man who died years earlier.

The man whose legacy built their family empire.

Impossible.

“My father is dead.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Michael stared.

“What?”

“Your father disappeared.”

A pause.

“Everyone was told he died.”

Michael felt the same cold feeling he had felt before.

Another death.

Another lie.

Another secret.

Claire reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“Your father left this.”

Michael opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

Written in his father’s handwriting.

Michael, if you are reading this, the people closest to you have already betrayed you.

Michael looked at Claire.

“How long have you known?”

Claire answered quietly:

“Since before our wedding.”

That night, Michael sat with Claire and reviewed every piece of evidence.

The necklace.

The cellar footage.

Daniel’s documents.

The hidden trust.

Everything.

And one thing became clear.

Vanessa was never the mastermind.

Daniel was never the mastermind.

Jonathan was never the mastermind.

They were all pieces.

The next morning, Michael made a decision.

He would not expose them one by one.

He would destroy the entire network.

Publicly.

Legally.

Completely.

But before he could move…

his investigator called.

“Mr. Bennett.”

“What happened?”

“We found the person financing Daniel Cross.”

Michael looked at Claire.

“Who?”

The investigator hesitated.

Then answered:

“The money came from an account belonging to your late wife’s father.”

Michael froze.

Claire’s face changed.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

The enemy was not outside the family.

It was inside.

And the person who started everything…

May you like

was someone Claire trusted her entire life.
