Chapter 5: The Man Who Wanted Her Father's Company
Richard Hale descended the basement stairs as though he owned the house.
His silver beard was perfectly trimmed, his navy suit immaculate despite the drive across town. He carried a leather briefcase in one hand and wore the expression of a man arriving for a meeting that everyone else had forgotten to schedule.
Daniel followed him.
My husband stopped halfway down the stairs when he saw me standing beside the open cabinet.
For a moment, he looked less angry than frightened.
Then his face hardened.
“Mara, what are you doing here?””
I held the ledger against my chest.
“Looking for the truth.””
Richard reached the bottom step and glanced at the cabinet.
“Your father always did enjoy hiding things in dramatic places.””
Claire stepped between him and the documents.
“This property is part of Mara's estate. You have no permission to enter the basement or access anything inside that cabinet.””
Richard smiled politely.
“Claire Brooks. Still mistaking a legal title for authority.””
“Leave the house, Mr. Hale.””
He ignored her and looked at me.
“Mara, I understand you've been upset. Your husband tells me the divorce has become unnecessarily hostile.””
I stared at Daniel.
“You brought him here?””
Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.
“He wanted to help resolve the situation.””
“By coming into my family's house without permission?””
Richard set his briefcase on a workbench.
“Let's not turn this into a spectacle. Your father and I were partners for many years. I have a legitimate interest in understanding what he left behind.””
“You have a legitimate interest in the company accounts, too?””
His smile remained, but something behind his eyes changed.
“Business records can be complicated. Your father was under enormous pressure near the end of his life. He made decisions that weren't always easy to explain.””
“My father was meticulous.””
“Your father was stubborn.””
“He was also the man who built Bennett Holdings.””
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a thick envelope.
“Which is why I came prepared to offer you a solution.””
He placed the envelope on the workbench, directly beside the ledger.
Inside were several pages of legal language and a proposed settlement. I could see signature lines, corporate seals, and a summary of the assets involved.
“I understand you have controlling interests in the company,” Richard said.
“I also understand you're a new mother with more immediate concerns than managing a complicated corporation.””
I looked at Daniel.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
Richard continued.
“Transfer the relevant voting rights to a professionally managed entity. Your husband can continue his executive role. The business can move forward, and you can concentrate on your family.””
“My husband is divorcing me.””
“Divorce is a personal matter. Business is business.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You want me to hand control of my father's company to the man who brought his mistress into my home.””
Richard's expression remained composed.
“Vanessa's personal life is irrelevant.””
“Then why was she in a private meeting with you and Daniel two days before my daughter was born?””
His eyes flicked toward Daniel.
It was a tiny movement.
But it answered more than a speech would have.
Richard closed the envelope.
“You're emotional, Mara. I understand. But emotion isn't a substitute for sound judgment.””
I stepped closer to the workbench.
“Neither is an expensive suit.””
Daniel winced.
Richard's smile vanished.
“Your father had a habit of confusing sentiment with competence. He believed he could build a company and then leave it to someone who had never managed a single division.””
“My father left the company to me because he trusted me.””
“He left you shares.””
“He left me a voting trust.””
For the first time, Richard's composure cracked.
Daniel turned toward me sharply.
“Who told you about the trust?””
I looked at him.
“You already knew it existed.””
He opened his mouth, then stopped.
Richard recovered quickly.
“A trust is a legal structure, not a guarantee that every decision made under it is wise. The company needs experienced leadership.””
“And you believe that should be you?””
“I believe Bennett Holdings deserves stability.””
I lifted the ledger.
“Then why does your name appear beside unauthorized transfers?””
Richard's face went still.
Claire stepped forward.
“Mara, don't make any further statements about the contents until we have secured the original records.””
Richard turned on her.
“You have no idea what you're looking at.””
“Neither do you,” Claire replied.
“Not yet.””
He took a step toward the cabinet.
I moved instinctively to block him.
“Don't touch it.””
His eyes dropped to my hands.
For a moment, the basement seemed to shrink around us.
Then Daniel grabbed my elbow.
“Just give him the ledger, Mara. You don't understand what you're getting involved in.””
I pulled away so sharply that he stumbled backward.
“Don't touch me.””
My daughter began crying in the carrier near the basement door. The sound cut through the room.
I turned immediately, lifted her, and held her against my chest.
Daniel looked toward her.
Something resembling guilt crossed his face.
It disappeared when Richard spoke.
“This is precisely why we need to settle matters quickly. A child needs a stable home. A mother needs financial security. Daniel needs to maintain his position.””
“And what do you need, Richard?””
He studied me for a moment.
“The opportunity to prevent a promising company from collapsing under inexperienced management.””
I looked at the ledger again.
The last transfer listed an account number I recognized from the company's annual statements. The money had been authorized four days before my father died.
My father had been in the hospital then.
He could barely hold a glass of water, much less review financial documents.
“Who signed this?”” I asked.
Richard glanced at the page.
“Your father approved numerous transactions during that period.””
“He was unconscious for part of that week.””
“Then perhaps someone had authority to act on his behalf.””
“Who?””
Richard said nothing.
I looked at Daniel.
“Was it you?””
He stared at the floor.
“Daniel.””
“I was following instructions.””
“Whose instructions?””
He finally looked up.
“Richard's.””
The admission hung in the air.
Richard's face darkened.
“You need to be careful about what you say.””
Daniel swallowed.
“You told me the documents were legitimate.””
“They were.””
“You said Mara's father had approved the arrangement.””
Richard took one measured step toward him.
“And you believed me because you wanted the promotion.””
Daniel flinched.
I felt something break inside me, but it wasn't my heart this time.
It was the last fragile piece of my belief that Daniel had been an innocent man manipulated by someone more powerful.
He had known enough to ask questions.
He had chosen not to.
“Why?”” I asked him.
Daniel looked at me.
“I wanted to build something of my own.””
“You were already building a career.””
“Not fast enough.””
“So you decided to take my father's company?””
“I didn't think it would happen like this.””
“How did you think it would happen?””
He ran both hands through his close-cropped hair.
“Richard said your father had made a private agreement. He said you would never want the responsibility of running the business. He told me that if I helped with the transition, I would become chief executive.””
“And the divorce?””
Daniel's eyes darted toward Richard.
I followed his gaze.
Richard answered for him.
“The marriage had become a complication. A clean separation would have simplified the ownership structure.””
I stared at him.
“You planned to divorce me so you could claim control of the company.””
“Not claim,” Richard said.
“Negotiate.””
“You brought Vanessa into my home to frighten me into signing your agreement.””
“Vanessa's presence was Daniel's decision.””
Daniel looked sick.
Richard picked up his briefcase.
“This conversation has gone far enough. I suggest you consult an attorney before making accusations you cannot support.””
Claire lifted her phone.
“Every statement made here has been documented in my contemporaneous notes. The records in that cabinet will be preserved and reviewed through the appropriate legal process.””
Richard's expression turned cold.
“You're bluffing.””
“Then you should have nothing to worry about.””
He looked at me one last time.
“Your father made the mistake of believing that money and family loyalty could protect him from reality. Don't repeat it.””
I held my daughter closer.
“My father made one mistake,” I said.
“He believed Daniel was a better man than he was.””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Mara, please.””
“No.””
“I loved you.””
“You loved the life you thought I could give you.””
“That isn't fair.””
I looked at the ledger, then at the photograph of the three men that I had brought from my father's study.
“You sat beside me in the hospital while I gave birth. You held our daughter. Then you went back to work and helped plan how to take what my father left her.””
Daniel's mouth trembled.
“I never wanted to hurt the baby.””
“Then you should have thought about her before you betrayed her mother.””
Richard moved toward the stairs.
“Daniel. We're leaving.””
But Daniel didn't follow immediately.
He stared at me, his face pale beneath the basement lights.
“There's something you need to know,” he whispered.
Richard stopped halfway up the stairs.
“Don't.””
Daniel's hands shook.
“The transfers weren't supposed to go through the account in the ledger. Richard changed the instructions after your father died.””
Richard turned slowly.
“Daniel, I am warning you.””
My husband looked at me.
“Your father didn't lose control because he was sick. He found out what we were doing, and he was going to expose us.””
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
“What do you mean, he found out?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Tell her.””
Richard's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
“Not another word.””
Daniel took a step toward me.
“Your father had a recording. He told Claire about it before he died. It proves Richard ordered the transfers.””
Claire's expression changed.
“What recording?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know where it is. Richard said he destroyed it.””
Richard's hand tightened around the briefcase handle.
May you like
Then Daniel delivered the words that made my blood run cold.
“But he also said there was a second copy.””
