Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Destroy Him

I stared at my signature until the letters stopped looking like my name.

The document lay open on the passenger seat of Marcus's SUV. Outside, traffic moved through the afternoon sunshine, ordinary and indifferent, while my entire understanding of my marriage collapsed one sentence at a time.

“I never signed this,” I said.

Marcus kept both hands on the steering wheel.

“I believe you.””

“You don't understand. I remember signing paperwork when Daniel and I bought our first house. I remember signing tax documents. I remember signing something for our joint savings account.””

I turned another page.

“But I never signed anything transferring control of my father's trust.””

“Then we need to establish when and how this document was created.””

I looked at him sharply.

“Stop talking like a lawyer. Someone stole my identity, and you already knew Daniel was interested in my inheritance.””

Marcus absorbed the accusation without flinching.

“You're right. I knew enough to be suspicious, and I should have investigated sooner.””

“That doesn't help me.””

“No,” he admitted.

“It doesn't.””

I grabbed my phone and called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Ava, thank God. Where are you?””

“Did you forge my signature?””

Silence.

Not even a breath.

I watched the seconds tick across the screen.

“Daniel?””

“Where did you get that document?””

“So you recognize it.””

“Listen to me. You have no idea what you're looking at.””

“Then explain it.””

“Come home. We'll discuss this privately.””

“You had seven years to discuss it privately.””

His voice sharpened.

“Don't turn this into something it isn't.””

I laughed, but the sound came out broken.

“You married me, gained my trust, involved yourself in my family's finances, and now a document says I authorized you to control my inheritance. What exactly am I supposed to call it?””

“It's complicated.””

“Only dishonest people need seven years to explain their paperwork.””

He exhaled sharply.

“Your father left behind obligations. I helped resolve them.””

“By forging my signature?””

“I never forged anything.””

“Then why did you go silent when I asked?””

“Because you're accusing me of a crime based on a document you don't understand.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was watching me, his expression grave.

“Daniel, I'm going to have this document examined.””

“Don't.””

The word came too quickly.

I sat straighter.

“Why not?””

“Because if you start digging into the trust, you could lose everything your father left you.””

“Is that a threat?””

“It's a warning.””

“No. It's the first honest thing you've said to me.””

I ended the call.

For several seconds, neither Marcus nor I spoke.

Then Marcus started the engine.

“Where are we going?”” I asked.

“To someone who can examine the document and help establish what happened.””

“And after that?””

“After that, you decide what you want to do.””

I looked down at the signature again.

For seven years, I had signed birthday cards, mortgage documents, holiday checks, and anniversary notes beside Daniel's name. I had written his name on gift tags and addressed envelopes to his family.

I had never imagined that the same man might use my handwriting as a weapon against me.

My phone buzzed.

A text from Vanessa.

*We need to talk. I have something you need to see. Daniel doesn't know I kept it.*

I read the message twice.

Then I replied.

*Where?*

Her answer came almost immediately.

*The coffee shop on Madison. Thirty minutes. Come alone.*

I showed Marcus.

He shook his head.

“Don't go alone.””

“She specifically asked me to.””

“That could be a trap.””

“Or she could be the only person besides my mother who knows what Daniel was planning.””

Marcus considered it.

“I'll stay nearby. You won't see me unless you need me.””

Thirty minutes later, I entered the coffee shop.

Vanessa sat in a corner booth wearing jeans, a plain black sweater, and no makeup. Without the emerald dress and perfect smile, she looked exhausted.

She stood when she saw me.

“Ava.””

“Sit down.””

She obeyed.

I remained standing.

“Why did you take my chair?””

Her face crumpled.

“I know you hate me.””

“That's not an answer.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Daniel told me you knew about us.””

My stomach tightened.

“You were having an affair with my husband?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly, without excuses.

“How long?””

“Eleven months.””

I gripped the back of the opposite chair.

“And you believed I knew?””

“He said you had agreed to an open marriage. He told me you were only staying together because of the financial arrangements involving your family.””

I stared at her.

“You believed that?””

“I wanted to.””

She looked up, tears gathering in her eyes.

“Daniel made me feel chosen. He said his marriage was complicated, that you were more like business partners than husband and wife. He said you both understood the situation.””

“And last night?””

“He wanted to prove he could control the situation. He wanted me sitting beside him when you brought out the cake.””

My chest tightened.

“He wanted to humiliate me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said you would cry, leave the room, and come back after everyone had gone. He thought you'd never confront him publicly.””

I pulled out the chair and sat down.

For the first time, Vanessa looked directly at me.

“I knew he was cruel to you,” she whispered.

“I saw the way he dismissed you. But I convinced myself that what happened between you was none of my business.””

“You made it your business when you accepted my husband's affection.””

“I know.””

She didn't ask me to forgive her.

That, at least, was something.

“What did you keep?”” I asked.

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small flash drive.

“Copies of emails. Financial records. Messages between Daniel and someone named Robert Hale.””

I recognized the name from my mother's explanation.

“What do the messages say?””

“That Daniel was trying to gain control of your father's trust. Robert was supposed to help him get access to the original records.””

“Why would you have these?””

“Because Daniel asked me to delete them from his laptop. I made copies first.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I discovered that he had lied to me, too.””

She pushed the flash drive across the table.

I didn't touch it immediately.

“What did he lie about?””

Vanessa stared at her hands.

“He told me he would leave you once the transfer was complete. He said we would start a new life together.””

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

“What changed?””

She gave a bitter little smile.

“I found a message he sent Robert. He said I was temporary. He said I was useful because I could distract him from questions about his marriage.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“Did he ever love me?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I don't know.””

It was the first answer anyone had given me that felt completely honest.

I took the drive.

“Why are you helping me now?””

“Because last night, when Marcus arrived, I realized Daniel wasn't invincible. And because when he looked at you, I saw something I hadn't noticed before.””

“What?””

“He wasn't afraid of losing you.””

She paused.

“He was afraid of what you might discover.””

I slipped the flash drive into my purse.

Vanessa reached across the table, then stopped before touching my hand.

“I am sorry, Ava.””

I stood.

“I'm not ready to forgive you.””

“I understand.””

“But if those records are real, I'll need you to tell the truth.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

As I turned toward the door, she called after me.

“One more thing.””

I stopped.

“Daniel didn't choose your chair last night because he wanted to show me he loved me.””

I looked back.

“He told me that if Marcus came, he wanted you to leave the room before they spoke. He was expecting something to happen.””

My blood ran cold.

“What was he expecting?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know. But he received a phone call yesterday afternoon, and after it ended, he told me everything had to happen that night.””

I walked out of the coffee shop and called Marcus.

He answered on the first ring.

“Are you safe?””

“Yes. But we have a problem.””

I told him about Vanessa, the flash drive, and the phone call Daniel had received.

Marcus was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “Ava, there's something I haven't told you about Robert Hale.””

“What?””

“Robert died six months ago.””

I stopped walking.

“Then who has been sending Daniel those messages?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“That's exactly what we need to find out.””

Before I could respond, an unknown number appeared on my screen.

A message arrived.

It contained a photograph of my mother leaving the community center that morning.

Beneath it were nine words.

*Stop digging, or your mother will pay for your mistakes.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Someone had been watching us.

And whoever it was knew exactly where to hurt me.
