Chapter 4: The Agreement Signed Before Their Wedding

Ava had heard Daniel lie about money, business, late nights, and the woman standing beside him in the red dress.

But she had never heard him use her wedding as a weapon.

“What did my father sign?”” she asked.

Daniel stood beneath the ballroom chandeliers, gripping the termination notice so tightly that its corners had begun to bend. Around him, the charity guests remained frozen in place. Even Vanessa had stopped reaching for her handbag.

Mr. Bennett didn't turn around immediately.

He kept his eyes on Daniel.

“Be very careful, son,” he said.

“You are approaching a point from which you cannot return.””

Daniel gave a strained laugh.

“That's exactly what everyone keeps saying to me tonight. Threats, warnings, consequences. But nobody seems interested in hearing the truth.””

Ava released her father's arm.

“Then tell it.””

Daniel looked at her, and for a moment she saw the man she had married eight years earlier. The confident smile. The reassuring eyes. The familiar tilt of his head that had once made her believe he could solve any problem.

Then he opened his mouth.

“Your father came to see me six days before our wedding.””

Ava frowned.

“What?””

“He came to my apartment. Alone. He brought a lawyer and a folder of documents.””

Mr. Bennett's jaw tightened.

Daniel continued, speaking louder now, as if the entire ballroom were a courtroom and he had finally found his defense.

“He told me that marrying you meant accepting certain responsibilities. He said your family had complicated affairs, and that if I wanted a future with you, I needed to understand the consequences.””

Ava looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Mr. Bennett finally faced her.

“I did visit Daniel before the wedding.””

“You never told me.””

“You asked me not to interfere in your marriage.””

“And you agreed.””

“I agreed not to control your choice of husband.””

Daniel seized the distinction.

“He made me sign an agreement, Ava. Before I could marry you.””

The room stirred.

Vanessa stepped closer, her eyes bright with sudden interest.

“What kind of agreement?””

Daniel barely glanced at her.

“One that would have protected me if your family decided to turn against me.””

Ava stared at him.

“You told me you married me because you loved me.””

“I did love you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes!””

His voice cracked across the ballroom.

Several guests flinched.

Daniel took a breath and lowered his tone.

“I was twenty-eight. I had a growing company, a few investors, and a future I was trying to build. Your father was a powerful man. He made it clear that being your husband could change my life, but he also made it clear that he could destroy everything I built if he thought I had hurt you.””

Mr. Bennett's expression remained steady.

“I explained the responsibilities that came with joining our family,” he said.

“I never threatened to destroy his company.””

“You told me that if I ever betrayed Ava, there would be consequences.””

“There are consequences for betrayal.””

“Exactly!””

Daniel spread his arms, almost relieved to have found a sentence he could use against the older man.

“You see? He admits it.””

Ava watched her husband with growing disbelief.

“You're saying my father warned you not to hurt me, and somehow you turned that into proof that he trapped you?””

Daniel looked at her.

“He made me sign papers!””

“What papers?””

He hesitated.

For the first time, his anger seemed to lose its direction.

“I don't remember every detail.””

“You remembered enough to bring it up in front of two hundred people.””

“Ava, listen to me.””

“No. You listen to me. You have spent years telling me that my family never accepted you.

You used that story every time you wanted me to feel guilty for visiting my father. You said I had to choose between you and the people who raised me.””

She took one step toward him.

“Was that because of an agreement you never explained to me?””

Daniel's silence was answer enough.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Honestly, Daniel, if you signed something, you signed it. You were a grown man.””

He snapped toward her.

“Stay out of this.””

Her eyebrows rose.

“Excuse me? You've been telling me for six months that your wife was the only obstacle between you and the life we were supposed to have.””

Ava's stomach tightened.

Six months.

Not a mistake. Not one reckless evening.

Six months of plans made behind her back.

Daniel grabbed Vanessa's elbow.

“Not here.””

She pulled away so sharply that her bracelet struck a crystal glass.

“Don't touch me!””

The glass tipped. Champagne spilled across the white tablecloth, running toward the envelope.

Ava watched the liquid spread.

For some reason, that small, ordinary accident made the whole evening feel more real than anything Daniel had said. A moment earlier, she had been his wife, humiliated before a room of strangers. Now she was standing beside her father while the man who had promised to love her struggled to keep his lies from spilling into the open.

Mr. Bennett moved the envelope away from the champagne.

“Daniel,” he said, “you should stop speaking before you make matters worse.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You've been saying that since I met you.””

“Because you have repeatedly mistaken patience for permission.””

The words landed with quiet force.

Ava looked at her father.

“What was in the agreement?””

Mr. Bennett drew a slow breath.

“It was a standard family confidentiality and conflict-of-interest agreement. It protected private family information and established boundaries around business dealings. Daniel had his own attorney review it.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“You're leaving out the most important part.””

“Then explain it.””

Daniel looked at Ava.

“The agreement said that if I ever deliberately used our marriage to obtain confidential family information or financial advantages, I could lose certain privileges and protections.””

Ava blinked.

“Privileges?””

“Your father had access to people I wanted to meet. Investors. Executives.

Powerful people who could open doors. I thought the agreement was his way of keeping me under his control.””

“Did you ever ask me about it?”” Ava asked.

“I didn't want to start our marriage with a fight.””

“So you hid it.””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“No,” she said quietly.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel's shoulders rose and fell.

Then he looked down at the termination notice.

“This is about the agreement, isn't it? You're using tonight as an excuse to enforce it.””

Mr. Bennett's eyes narrowed.

“Tonight merely removed any remaining doubt about your judgment.””

Ava felt a chill move through her.

“What doubt?””

Her father turned to her, and the sternness in his expression softened.

“I received information several weeks ago suggesting Daniel had been asking questions about confidential family assets. I didn't act on rumors. I asked for documentation. Tonight, I intended to speak with him privately.””

Daniel's face went still.

Vanessa slowly moved away from him.

Ava looked at her husband.

“What kind of information?””

Mr. Bennett didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened the envelope Daniel had already torn and removed a second sheet that had slipped behind the first.

“This document concerns the partnership,” he said.

“The other matter is separate.””

Daniel reached for the page.

Mr. Bennett held it just beyond his grasp.

“Do not make me repeat myself.””

Daniel's hand fell.

Ava stared at her father.

“You said there was something else?””

“Yes.””

“What did Daniel do?””

Mr. Bennett looked at the guests gathered around them.

“Not here.””

Daniel let out a nervous laugh.

“Of course. Now we need privacy.””

Mr. Bennett ignored him and offered Ava his arm.

But before she could take it, a young Black woman in a navy evening dress approached from beside the stage. She carried a slim leather folder against her chest and looked as though she had been trying to decide whether to interrupt for several minutes.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said, “I'm sorry. I know you asked me to wait.””

Mr. Bennett recognized her.

“Is it urgent, Simone?””

She glanced at Daniel.

Then at Ava.

“Yes, sir. The additional records have arrived.””

Daniel's face lost what little color remained.

Simone opened the folder and removed a printed page.

“The signature verification is complete,” she said.

“And there's something else you need to see.””

Ava looked between them.

“Signature verification for what?””

Simone hesitated.

Mr. Bennett's voice grew colder.

“Tell her.””

The young woman turned toward Ava.

“Mrs. Hayes, someone used your name to authorize a transaction you never approved.””

Ava felt the ballroom tilt around her.

Daniel took a step backward.

And when Simone placed the document on the table, Ava recognized the signature at the bottom immediately.

May you like

It looked exactly like hers.

Except Ava had never signed it.
