Chapter 6 - THE BOARD MEETING WHERE NATHAN LOST HIS CHAIRMonday arrived with rain.

At 8:00 a.m., the Grant Meridian board assembled in Manhattan.

Nathan entered expecting to chair.

His seat was occupied.

By Evelyn.

He stopped at the doorway.

“What is this?”

The lead independent director, Samuel Greene, answered:

“A special meeting.”

“Called by whom?”

“Creditors holding trigger rights.”

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

“You.”

She did not answer.

Clara entered two minutes later with an attorney.

Her confidence returned when she saw Victor Vale arrive behind her.

Nathan stared.

“Why is he here?”

Victor smiled.

“Because you invited me into your company three years ago.”

Nathan looked at Clara.

She avoided his eyes.

Finally, he understood.

“You.”

Clara sat.

Nathan’s voice became lower.

“What did you do?”

Victor answered:

“What you were too proud to do.”

“And what is that?”

“Prepared for reality.”

Evelyn opened the meeting.

For three hours, evidence came out.

Phoenix.

Hidden debt.

False disclosures.

Victor’s financing.

Clara’s secret payments.

The undisclosed side agreements.

Board members looked increasingly sick.

Then Nathan stood.

“This is a hostile takeover.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

She tapped the documents.

“This is what happens when leadership lies.”

Victor smiled.

“You should listen to your wife.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“Don’t enjoy yourself yet.”

Victor’s smile faded.

She opened another folder.

Because Julia’s evidence exposed something else.

Victor had obtained confidential information from Clara that she was legally prohibited from sharing.

Material nonpublic information.

Trade secrets.

Potential securities violations.

Victor’s trigger rights were now disputed.

His counsel immediately objected.

Evelyn continued.

“Hartwell filed for emergency relief at 6:15 this morning.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“You think you can freeze my rights?”

“I think a judge can.”

Nathan stared at his wife.

For the first time that day, he looked almost impressed.

Then Evelyn turned toward him.

“Don’t mistake this for rescue.”

His expression changed.

She presented the motion.

Nathan Grant temporarily removed as CEO pending independent investigation.

Clara Voss terminated for cause.

Grant Meridian placed under interim management.

The vote passed.

Nine to two.

Nathan stood silently.

His empire had not been taken by Victor.

It had not been taken by Clara.

It had been taken out of Nathan’s hands by the woman he spent ten years convincing everyone was decorative.

Outside the boardroom, Nathan stopped Evelyn.

“What happens to us?”

She looked at him.

“You mean the marriage?”

“Yes.”

“I filed this morning.”

His face went blank.

“For divorce?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t even talk to me.”

“I talked for ten years.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

She looked tired.

“I also know what you mean.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“I love you.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled, but she did not look away.

“I believe you.”

He seemed surprised.

“Then why?”

“Because love did not stop you from using me.”

He swallowed.

“Or cheating.”

Silence.

“Or letting another woman humiliate me because you needed investors comfortable.”

Nathan looked broken.

“I can change.”

“Maybe.”

Hope appeared.

Evelyn continued:

“But you don’t get to practice changing on me anymore.”

May you like

She walked away.

This time, Nathan did not follow.
