Chapter 7: The Man My Father Never Trusted

"Richard helped them hide the original agreement.""

The surgeon's words echoed through the storage facility.

I turned toward Richard.

He stood beside the filing cabinet, his face pale, his hands hanging motionless at his sides.

"Tell me she's lying," I said.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Michael Reed entered the storage unit, followed by the surgeon. He closed the metal door behind them.

"Emily, my name is Dr. Laura Bennett," the woman said.

"I was your surgeon after the accident. I know this is difficult, but you need to listen to me.""

I barely heard her.

My attention remained on Richard.

"Did you help Daniel?""

Richard shook his head.

"Not in the way you're thinking.""

"Then explain it.""

He looked at the blue folder on the desk.

"Your father asked me to protect the trust documents. He believed Daniel was searching for them. I agreed to keep the original agreement somewhere Daniel couldn't find it.""

Dr. Bennett stepped forward.

"That's not the whole story.""

Richard's expression tightened.

"Laura, please.""

"No. She's entitled to know.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Know what?""

Dr. Bennett placed her document on the desk.

"After your accident, Daniel came to the hospital twice before you regained consciousness. He wasn't asking about your recovery.""

"What was he asking?""

"Whether you had said anything about the company. Whether you had signed any documents before the accident. And whether your injuries would affect your ability to remember certain events.""

I stared at her.

"Why would he ask that?""

"Because he was trying to establish that you were no longer capable of managing your financial affairs.""

Michael Reed spoke for the first time.

"He wanted a court-appointed representative. Someone who could temporarily control your assets.""

I looked at him.

"And you helped him?""

Michael lowered his eyes.

"Initially, yes.""

The admission made my hands go cold.

Richard stepped forward.

"Michael was involved in the original financing. He knew about your father's trust, and Daniel promised him a percentage of the company if he helped secure control.""

Michael nodded.

"I made a terrible decision.""

"How terrible?""

He took a breath.

"Terrible enough that I've spent two years trying to undo it.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Two years? You knew what happened to me, and you waited two years?""

"I didn't know Daniel would go as far as he did.""

"Nobody ever seems to know anything until it's too late.""

Dr. Bennett opened her document.

"There's another reason I came here.""

She placed a medical report beside my father's letter.

"This is the original emergency assessment from the night of your accident.""

I looked down.

The first few pages contained familiar medical terminology.

Then I noticed a handwritten note.

Patient briefly regained consciousness during transport. Repeatedly stated: 'He knew. He knew the brakes were gone.''

My breath caught.

I remembered fragments of the ambulance.

The siren.

The oxygen mask.

Daniel standing beside the paramedic.

But I had no memory of saying those words.

"Did anyone hear me?"" I asked.

Dr. Bennett nodded.

"One of the paramedics documented it. But the statement was omitted from the final hospital report.""

"Why?""

She glanced at Richard.

"Because someone requested that it be treated as a medication-related confusion.""

"Who?""

She turned the page.

The authorization carried Daniel's signature.

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"He changed my medical records?""

"He requested a correction. The hospital administrator approved it without reviewing the original paramedic notes.""

Michael spoke quietly.

"Daniel was already trying to control the narrative before you even woke up.""

I closed my eyes.

For two years, I had believed my memory of that night was unreliable.

Now I was holding proof that someone had deliberately made it unreliable.

Richard touched my shoulder.

"Emily, I am sorry.""

I stepped away.

"Don't.""

He lowered his hand.

"I knew your father suspected Daniel. I should have told you everything.""

"Yes, you should have.""

"I thought I was protecting you.""

"Everybody keeps saying that.""

My voice cracked.

"Everybody decided what I could handle. Everybody decided what I should know. And while you were protecting me, Daniel was taking my company, my home, and my life.""

Nobody spoke.

Then the security alarm sounded.

A sharp electronic beep echoed through the corridor.

One of the investigators looked toward the entrance.

"Someone has opened the exterior security door.""

Michael moved toward the window.

His face changed.

"That's not good.""

A black SUV was parked outside.

Daniel stood beside it.

He was holding a phone against his ear.

And he was looking directly at our unit.

"How did he find us?"" I whispered.

Michael looked at the folder.

"Because someone told him.""

I turned toward Richard.

He immediately shook his head.

"Emily, it wasn't me.""

Before I could respond, the metal door rattled.

Daniel's voice came through.

"Emily! Open the door!""

Mr. Collins, who had arrived with another investigator minutes earlier, stepped between me and the entrance.

"Nobody opens that door.""

Daniel struck the metal again.

"You're making this worse!""

I stared at the blue folder.

My father's documents.

The original trust records.

The evidence Daniel had spent years searching for.

Then I noticed something.

The final page was missing.

A rectangular section had been torn from the binding.

"Where's the last page?"" I asked.

Richard looked down.

His face drained of color.

Then Dr. Bennett whispered:

"That's the page that identifies the person your father appointed to control the trust if you were ever unable to do so.""

I turned toward her.

"Who?""

She looked at Richard.

"Your father appointed someone who wasn't family.""

The door shook again.

Daniel shouted my name.

May you like

And Richard finally spoke.

"Emily, the person your father trusted most was...""
