Chapter 5: The Stranger at the Ballroom Door

The woman in burgundy had barely finished speaking when Marcus rushed toward her.

“Where is he?””

She took a step back.

“Sir, please.””

“I asked you a question. Where is the man?””

Darius stepped between them.

“Marcus, stop.””

Marcus ignored him.

“You can't drop a bomb like that and expect me to stand here doing nothing!””

The woman glanced at Darius.

“Should I bring him in?””

Darius considered the question for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“If he's willing to speak calmly.””

She walked toward the ballroom entrance.

Marcus began pacing beside the central aisle, still clutching the laboratory report. The paper had developed a deep crease where his fingers squeezed it.

Brielle followed him.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

“Not now.””

“Yes, now. You told me Ava was your biological daughter.””

“I believed she was.””

“You told me Naomi was lying about everything.””

Marcus stopped pacing.

“Can you please stop repeating yourself?””

Brielle's eyes flashed.

“You embarrassed her in front of everyone. You laughed while she stood there holding your child. And now you're acting as though this happened to you for no reason.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Whose side are you on?””

Brielle looked at him for several seconds.

“I'm trying to figure out whether I ever knew you.””

She walked toward one of the champagne tables and stopped there, leaving him alone.

I watched the exchange from beside Darius.

Part of me wanted to feel satisfied. Marcus had spent years making me question my own worth, and seeing his carefully polished image crack should have felt like justice.

Instead, I felt tired.

Ava leaned against my hip.

“Mommy?””

I looked down.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can we get ice cream after this?””

The unexpected question nearly made me cry.

I smiled and brushed her cheek.

“Yes. Whatever flavor you want.””

“Even chocolate and strawberry together?””

“Even chocolate and strawberry together.””

Darius heard us and smiled faintly.

“That's a very serious combination.””

Ava nodded solemnly.

“It is.””

For a few seconds, the ballroom seemed to shrink around that tiny conversation. There was only my daughter, her warm hand in mine, and the quiet certainty that whatever happened next, I would take her home.

Then the woman in burgundy returned.

A Black man walked beside her.

He appeared to be in his early forties, wearing a charcoal suit and a white shirt with the top button undone. He was clean-shaven, with close-cropped hair and a narrow scar near his right eyebrow.

He carried no champagne glass.

He wasn't looking at the guests.

He was looking at Ava.

When he saw her, his steps slowed.

Ava noticed him staring and moved behind me.

I immediately put my arm around her.

“Can I help you?”” I asked.

The man shifted his attention to me.

“My name is Andre Collins.””

Darius studied him.

“You said you had information about Ava's paternity.””

Andre nodded.

“I do.””

Marcus pushed forward.

“Then talk.””

Andre looked at him.

“Not to you.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“Excuse me?””

Andre took a slow breath.

“I came here because I heard about the test. I know what the result says.””

“Then you know I'm not her father,” Marcus snapped.

“So tell me who is.””

Andre's eyes moved briefly toward Ava.

“I think Naomi should decide whether this conversation happens in front of her daughter.””

For the first time, Marcus appeared to understand that his demands weren't the only consideration in the room.

He looked at me.

“Fine. Send the child somewhere else.””

“No,” I said.

His eyebrows rose.

“What?””

“Ava stays with me.””

Andre nodded.

“That's fair.””

Darius gestured toward a quiet section beside the ballroom's main floral arrangement, still fully visible to the guests but far enough from the champagne tables to offer some privacy.

“We can speak here,” he said.

We moved several steps away from the central aisle.

Ava held my hand with one hand and Darius's with the other.

Andre watched the three of us, and something complicated crossed his face.

Marcus noticed.

“What are you looking at?””

Andre didn't respond.

Instead, he turned toward me.

“Naomi, I knew your name before I came tonight.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“From where?””

“From someone who has regretted a decision for a very long time.””

“That doesn't tell me anything.””

“I know.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

The apology sounded so unexpected that I didn't know what to do with it.

Marcus let out an impatient laugh.

“Are you going to speak in riddles all night?””

Andre finally looked at him.

“You're the man who raised Ava's name without knowing the truth about her biological parentage.””

“I raised her!””

“Did you?””

Marcus stepped forward.

Darius lifted one hand.

“Enough.””

Andre continued, his voice steady.

“I've spent years trying to find the right way to address what happened. When I heard that a paternity test had been presented tonight, I realized I couldn't keep waiting.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at Ava again.

“Because she deserves the truth when the adults are ready to handle it responsibly.””

Marcus's expression twisted.

“Are you saying you're her father?””

Andre went silent.

That silence seemed to stretch forever.

I felt Ava's hand tighten around mine.

Darius glanced at Andre.

“You need to be clear about what you know and what you don't.””

Andre nodded.

“I understand.””

He reached inside his jacket and withdrew a small, worn photograph.

The edges were softened from years of handling. He held it toward me.

I hesitated before taking it.

The picture showed a younger woman standing outside a hospital entrance, smiling at the camera. She wore a simple blue dress and held a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.

My breath caught.

I recognized the woman immediately.

It was my older sister, Renee.

She had died before Ava's second birthday.

I looked up at Andre.

“Where did you get this?””

“Renee gave it to me.””

The ballroom seemed to tilt.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“Your sister?””

I couldn't answer him.

My eyes were fixed on Andre.

“Why would Renee give you a photograph of herself holding Ava?””

Andre's face tightened.

“Because she was trying to protect someone.””

“Who?””

He glanced at Marcus, then at Darius.

Finally, his eyes returned to mine.

“Before I tell you anything else, you need to know that Renee never wanted Ava to grow up believing her birth was a mistake.””

My throat closed.

“Why would she think Ava believed that?””

Andre swallowed.

“Because of what happened the night Ava was born.””

I gripped the photograph so tightly that its corners bent beneath my fingers.

Marcus stepped forward.

“What happened that night?””

Andre looked at him.

Then he turned back to me.

“I can't explain it properly without telling you what Renee discovered about your marriage.””

My heart pounded.

“My marriage?””

Andre nodded.

“And the reason Marcus believed Ava was his daughter.””

Marcus went completely still.

For the first time, neither he nor Brielle spoke.

Andre looked down at the worn photograph one last time.

Then he raised his eyes to me and said, “Naomi, the truth began long before Ava was born.””
