Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Letter

Naomi read the sentence again.

Then again.

The words did not change.

*The person who betrayed me was someone you love.*

Her father’s handwriting stared back at her.

A warning from the past.

A truth he had carried alone.

The lobby remained silent, but Naomi barely noticed anyone anymore.

Not the guests.

Not the employees.

Not even Mr. Caldwell.

All she could see was the letter.

All she could hear was her father’s voice in her memory.

Trust carefully, Naomi.

She used to think he meant strangers.

She never imagined he meant family.

Slowly, she looked up.

Her eyes moved across every person standing in front of her.

Thomas Reed.

Victoria Hale.

Daniel Reeves.

Mr. Caldwell.

Then finally…

Her mother.

Evelyn’s face had changed.

She wasn’t surprised.

She was scared.

And that scared Naomi more than anything.

“Mom.””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Naomi…”

“Did you know?””

The question was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Naomi stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“Please don’t tell me you knew.””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“I knew your father was afraid.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Naomi held up the letter.

“Did you know what he wrote?””

Evelyn looked at the page.

Then at Naomi.

“No.””

The answer came softly.

“I didn’t know those exact words.””

Naomi searched her face.

“And you expected me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because it’s the truth.””

Naomi laughed bitterly.

“Everyone here has a truth.””

She looked around.

“Everyone has a secret.””

Her gaze landed on Mr. Caldwell.

“You.””

Then Daniel.

“You.””

Then her mother.

“And you.””

She folded the letter carefully.

“Five years ago, I thought I lost my family.””

Her voice became colder.

“Now I find out I was surrounded by people who knew more about my life than I did.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Naomi, your father didn’t want you to discover everything at once.””

She looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he knew it would destroy your trust.””

Naomi stared.

“It already did.””

Thomas looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

She turned the letter over.

“There has to be more.””

Thomas nodded.

“There is.””

He opened the box again.

Near the bottom was a small envelope.

Different from the first.

Older.

Sealed.

“This was the final piece.””

Naomi looked at it.

“Why didn’t you give me this before?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Because your father instructed me not to.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“Because he wanted her to be here.””

Everyone turned.

Naomi’s eyes narrowed.

“My mother?””

Thomas nodded.

“He said you would need to hear her side before you read this.””

Naomi stared at Evelyn.

“What side?””

Evelyn looked like she wanted to speak.

But she couldn’t.

Thomas handed her the envelope.

“Evelyn.””

Her hands shook as she took it.

For a moment, Naomi saw something unexpected.

Her mother looked afraid.

Not of being exposed.

Of losing her daughter.

Evelyn opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

She looked at it.

Then closed her eyes.

Naomi noticed.

“What is it?””

Evelyn slowly handed it to her.

Naomi took the photo.

And froze.

It showed her father.

Standing in the hotel office.

Five years earlier.

Beside him was a woman.

Not Evelyn.

Someone else.

Someone Naomi recognized.

The woman from the company board.

The woman who had appeared in newspapers after her father’s death.

The woman who had publicly supported Mr. Caldwell’s leadership.

Margaret Ellis.

Naomi looked confused.

“Why is she in this?””

Thomas answered.

“Because Margaret was not just a board member.””

Naomi looked at him.

“What was she?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your father’s closest financial advisor.””

The room shifted.

Naomi looked at the photo again.

“She worked with him for years.””

“Yes.””

“And she betrayed him?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

Mr. Caldwell suddenly spoke.

“You’re wasting your time.””

Everyone turned.

He leaned against the counter.

The fear was gone.

Replaced by something else.

Confidence.

Naomi noticed.

“You know something.””

He smiled.

“I know that you’re chasing ghosts.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You should be worried, Richard.””

“Why?””

“Because the evidence exists.””

Mr. Caldwell laughed.

“The evidence?””

He looked around.

“You have old papers. A recording. A dead man’s voice.””

He pointed toward Naomi.

“And an emotional daughter who wants someone to blame.””

Naomi stared.

“You’re enjoying this.””

“Because I know something you don’t.””

“What?””

Mr. Caldwell looked at Evelyn.

“You think she came back because she missed you?””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

But he continued.

“She came back because she needed something.””

Naomi looked at her mother.

“What does he mean?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Mr. Caldwell smiled.

“There it is.””

He nodded toward her.

“Ask her.””

Naomi’s heart sank.

“Mom?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Naomi…”

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“I need you to answer.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Then she said:

“I came back because your father left me a message.””

Naomi frowned.

“A message?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two days after he died.””

Naomi stared.

“How?””

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

“He arranged it before.””

Thomas nodded.

“He knew she would be afraid.””

Naomi looked between them.

“What did the message say?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then:

“He said the person who betrayed him was still inside the company.””

Naomi looked at the photograph.

“Margaret?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

The answer surprised her.

“Then who?””

Evelyn looked directly at Naomi.

“Someone closer.””

A chill ran through her.

“Closer than Margaret?””

Evelyn nodded.

Naomi’s voice became smaller.

“Who?””

Evelyn didn’t speak.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Your father believed the betrayal came from someone who had access to everything.””

“Who?””

Thomas looked at the letter.

Then at Naomi.

“Someone who knew his passwords.””

“Someone who knew his schedule.””

“Someone who knew where he kept important documents.””

Naomi’s breathing slowed.

Because suddenly, there were only a few people who fit that description.

Her mother.

Her uncle.

And…

Her.

No.

The thought made her sick.

“My father thought I betrayed him?””

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Before he could answer, the lobby lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The security system beeped.

Daniel checked the monitor.

His face changed.

“What?””

Naomi turned.

“What is it?””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Someone accessed the private archive room.””

Thomas went pale.

“That room is sealed.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Who has access?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at Naomi.

Then at Mr. Caldwell.

Then slowly said:

“Only three people.””

Naomi felt a cold wave pass through her.

“Who?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Henry Caldwell.””

Silence.

“Evelyn Caldwell.””

Another pause.

“And…”

His voice dropped.

“Naomi Caldwell.””

Everyone looked at her.

Naomi stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The system just accepted your identity.””

Mr. Caldwell smiled.

A slow, dangerous smile.

“You see?””

He looked at Naomi.

“Maybe your father wasn’t afraid of me.””

Naomi felt her heartbeat rising.

“What are you saying?””

Mr. Caldwell stepped closer.

“I’m saying maybe he was afraid of you.””

“No.””

The word came from Evelyn.

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“Richard, don’t.””

But he was already smiling.

“Why?””

He looked at Naomi.

“Because she deserves to know.””

Naomi felt the room closing around her.

“What?””

Mr. Caldwell leaned forward.

“The night your father died…”

He paused.

“And the person who was with him last…”

Naomi held her breath.

May you like

Mr. Caldwell whispered:

“Was you.””
