Chapter 2: The Video Before the Wedding

The footage began with an empty swimming pool patio.

The image was bright and perfectly clear. Sunlight reflected off the turquoise water, and the white floral arrangements looked almost identical to the ones surrounding the guests now.

Tasha appeared on the screen wearing her wedding dress.

She glanced over her shoulder, checking the garden entrance. Then she walked toward the decorative curtain concealing the rescue ring.

Nia leaned forward despite the ache in her shoulder.

“That was before the ceremony,” she whispered.

Malik held the phone steady.

Onscreen, Tasha lifted the curtain, removed the rescue ring from its hook, and carried it behind a row of stacked banquet chairs. She returned to the pool, crouched beside a small control panel, and pressed several buttons.

A tiny indicator light went dark.

The recording continued.

Tasha straightened her gown, checked her reflection in the dark glass of the panel, and smiled at herself.

Then she walked away.

The patio around them erupted in angry whispers.

A man in a navy suit shook his head.

“She disabled the pool alarm?””

Another guest lowered her phone.

“She hid the rescue ring, too.””

Tasha lunged toward Malik's phone.

“Give me that!””

Malik stepped backward.

“Don't touch me.””

“That's not what it looks like!””

“Then tell me what it looks like.””

“It was a prank! I wanted to scare her, that's all.””

Nia's stomach tightened.

“You hid the equipment before you pushed me?””

Tasha looked at her with open irritation.

“Nothing happened to you.””

“My shoulder is injured, Tasha.””

“And you're still talking, aren't you?””

The words escaped her so casually that even Tasha seemed surprised by the silence that followed.

Malik stared at his wife.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Tasha looked away and smoothed the front of her wedding gown, tugging at a fold near her waist.

“I've spent a year planning this wedding. A year. You have no idea how much pressure I've been under.””

Nia blinked at her.

“So you decided to throw me into a pool?””

“You always do this!””

“Do what?””

“Make everything about you!””

Tasha's voice rose, sharp enough to make several guests flinch.

“Your surgery. Your recovery. Your little apartment problems.

Every family dinner becomes a conversation about what Nia needs. I couldn't even have one day without everyone worrying about you!””

Nia stared at her sister as if she had never heard her speak before.

For most of their childhood, Nia had been the one who made excuses for Tasha. When Tasha broke their mother's favorite vase, Nia claimed she had done it. When Tasha lost a scholarship application, Nia stayed up all night helping her rewrite it. When their father died, Nia quietly took on extra shifts so Tasha could finish college without worrying about rent.

Nia had never kept a list of those sacrifices.

She had believed that sisters did not need to.

Now Tasha stood in front of her, furious that an injury had occasionally required compassion.

Malik crouched beside Nia again.

“Can you move your fingers?””

Nia carefully flexed them.

“Yes, but my shoulder hurts.””

“I'm calling an ambulance.””

“No.”” Nia swallowed.

“I don't want to make a scene.””

Malik's expression softened.

“Someone already made the scene. It wasn't you.””

He gestured to a venue employee, who hurried away to call for medical assistance.

Across the patio, a middle-aged Black woman in an elegant navy suit pushed through the crowd. She wore a venue manager's identification badge and carried a tablet against her chest.

“I'm Denise Walker, the venue manager,” she announced.

“I need everyone to step away from the pool.””

Tasha immediately straightened.

“Thank God. Tell them this is being blown out of proportion.””

Denise did not look at her.

“Ma'am, I watched the footage on the security system. I need you to remain here while I preserve the recording.””

Tasha's face stiffened.

“You were watching us?””

“The pool area is covered by security cameras.””

“Then show everyone the entire recording,” Tasha snapped.

“Not some edited clip on his phone.””

Denise tapped her tablet.

“I intend to.””

She turned toward Malik.

“The camera recorded the push from another angle. The image is clear. Your wife checked the area before approaching your sister, then placed both hands against her back.””

Tasha's champagne flute slipped from her fingers.

It struck the stone patio and shattered.

Several guests jumped.

For the first time, Tasha seemed unable to find the right words.

Denise continued.

“I've also asked our security team to preserve the equipment logs. The pool alarm was manually disabled before the reception began.””

Malik looked at Tasha.

“Was that part of the joke, too?””

Tasha's eyes filled with tears.

But Nia noticed that the tears appeared only after the guests began whispering about the police.

“Malik, please,” Tasha said.

“We just got married.””

He glanced down at the gold wedding band on his finger.

“I know.””

“You promised we'd handle our problems privately.””

“You pushed your injured sister into a pool in front of a hundred people.””

“I said I was sorry!””

“No, you said she was dramatic.””

Tasha reached for his hand.

He pulled it away.

Nia watched the exchange without speaking. She wanted to feel vindicated, but all she could feel was exhaustion. Her wet dress clung to her skin, and the afternoon breeze made her shiver.

Then Denise's tablet chimed.

The manager frowned at the screen.

“That's strange.””

Malik turned toward her.

“What is it?””

Denise studied the security log, then enlarged a section of the recording.

“There was another camera angle running before the ceremony. It captured activity near the bridal preparation suite.””

Tasha went completely still.

Nia noticed.

So did Malik.

Denise looked from the tablet to the bride.

“Mrs. Carter, why were you photographing your sister's medical documents this morning?””

The patio fell silent.

Nia's heart seemed to stop.

“My what?””

Tasha backed away from the tablet.

“I didn't photograph anything.””

Denise rotated the screen toward them.

The footage showed Tasha standing inside the bridal preparation suite, holding a folder that Nia recognized immediately. It contained her surgical discharge instructions, rehabilitation schedule, and insurance paperwork.

Tasha had been the person who offered to organize Nia's belongings when she arrived at the venue.

On the screen, she opened the folder, photographed several pages with her phone, and sent something to a contact whose identity was not visible.

Nia felt the blood drain from her face.

“You told me you were putting my documents somewhere safe.””

Tasha's mouth opened, but no answer came.

Malik looked at the screen.

“Who did you send them to?””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Denise enlarged the footage.

A second recording appeared in the corner of the display, showing the same suite from a different angle.

This time, Tasha was not alone.

A man in a charcoal suit entered the room, accepted the folder from her, and handed her a sealed envelope.

Nia recognized the envelope.

May you like

She had seen one exactly like it in her apartment three days earlier.

And suddenly, she remembered the letter she had been too frightened to open.
