Chapter 7: The Footage Revealed What Happened Before the Fall
The investigator arrived at my hospital room shortly after nine the following morning.
Detective Harris was a Black woman in her early forties, dressed in a navy suit with a small notebook tucked beneath her arm. She introduced herself, confirmed that I was comfortable speaking, and pulled a chair beside my bed.
“I want you to understand something before we begin, Mrs. Carter,” she said.
“My job is to establish what happened, not to protect anyone's reputation.””
I nodded.
“That's all I want.””
“Good. We have obtained the original security footage from your home. We're reviewing it alongside the statements and financial documents that have been provided.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Does it show Margaret pushing me?””
Detective Harris opened her notebook.
“The staircase camera appears to capture the incident. I haven't come here to show you unverified conclusions, though. I want to hear your account first.””
I told her everything.
The inheritance documents. Margaret's fingers digging into my shoulder. The shove. The way Devin had defended his mother before asking whether I could breathe.
When I finished, Detective Harris asked whether Margaret had threatened me before.
“Not physically,” I said.
“She controlled everything she could. She criticized my clothes, my career, and my relationship with my father. But the money changed things.””
“How?””
“She wanted access to my inheritance. When I refused to sign the papers, she became furious.””
Detective Harris made a note.
“Did your husband know about the dispute?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know you were afraid of his mother?””
I looked toward the window.
“He knew I was unhappy. I don't know whether he understood how frightened I had become.””
The detective closed her notebook.
“Thank you. We'll compare your statement with the available evidence. If we need clarification, we'll contact you through the appropriate channels.””
Before she left, I asked the question that had kept me awake all night.
“What was Devin doing in the study before the fall?””
Detective Harris paused.
“We're examining that part of the recording separately.””
“Does it show him doing something wrong?””
“I don't want to speculate before the review is complete.””
She stood, thanked me, and left.
I spent the next hour staring at the ceiling.
Every version of my marriage that I had believed in seemed to be disappearing. I had loved Devin's kindness, his ambition, and the way he used to hold my hand beneath restaurant tables when he thought nobody was watching.
Now I wondered how much of that man I had actually known.
My phone rang.
Elaine.
“Detective Harris contacted me,” she said.
“She confirmed that the footage has been preserved. I also received a request from Devin's attorney concerning the financial records.””
“What kind of request?””
“He wants to provide additional information about the company transactions.””
“Does he want to help?””
“He says he does. We'll see what the records establish.””
I exhaled.
“Elaine, I'm scared that he's going to tell them I agreed to the transfer.””
“Your written objections, the messages, and the original records will help establish your position. Don't assume the outcome before we've reviewed everything.””
After we hung up, I tried to rest.
But around noon, Tasha called.
“Mrs. Carter, I need to tell you something.””
“Are you safe?””
“Yes. I'm staying with my sister. I haven't gone back to the mansion.””
“Good. What happened?””
“Mrs. Carter called me this morning. She said I had stolen confidential information and threatened to report me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you say?””
“I told her I had taken photographs because I was worried about what was happening. Then she asked whether I'd sent anything to you.””
“Did you?””
“I told her I wasn't discussing it.””
Tasha paused.
“Then she said something strange. She told me that if the cameras showed anything, it would only prove that you had provoked her.””
I closed my eyes.
Even now, Margaret was trying to turn her own actions into my responsibility.
“Did she mention Devin?””
“Yes. She said he would confirm that you had been unstable and aggressive.””
My chest tightened.
“That's a lie.””
“I know, ma'am. I was there that afternoon. I heard her arguing with you before the fall.””
I gripped the phone.
“You heard the argument?””
“Not every word. I was in the kitchen, but the hallway carries sound. I heard Mrs.
Carter say, 'You will sign those papers, whether you like it or not.'' Then I heard you say no.””
I swallowed.
“Would you tell the investigator that?””
“If she asks me, yes.””
“Thank you, Tasha.””
After we ended the call, I sent the information to Elaine.
That afternoon, Devin appeared at the hospital reception desk.
He had removed his tie, and his black suit looked as though he'd slept in it. A receptionist called my room to ask whether I would accept his visit.
I considered saying no.
Then I remembered what Elaine had told me: I didn't owe anyone access to me, especially not someone who had helped put me in danger.
Still, I wanted answers.
“Ten minutes,” I told the receptionist.
“And the door stays open.””
Devin entered slowly.
He stopped beside the chair, looking at me as though he expected me to tell him to leave.
“Thank you for seeing me,” he said.
“Don't waste the ten minutes.””
He sat.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he pulled a folded sheet of paper from his pocket.
“My attorney helped me prepare a statement about the financial transactions. I've provided the relevant records to the investigator.””
“Why?””
“Because the truth matters.””
“Does it matter more now that the camera footage exists?””
He lowered his eyes.
“I deserved that.””
I stared at him.
“You stood over me while your mother told you I had fallen. I told you she pushed me, and you called me confused.””
“I know.””
“No. You remember what you said. That's different.””
His face crumpled slightly.
“I was afraid of what would happen if I challenged her.””
“And you decided I should pay the price for your fear.””
He had no answer.
I looked at the clock.
“Your ten minutes are almost over.””
“There's something else.”” He leaned forward, then stopped when I stiffened.
“I never knew she would push you. I swear to you, Alicia.””
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because I have nothing left to gain by lying.””
I almost laughed.
“You have your freedom, your reputation, and your money. Those are quite a few things to gain.””
He flinched.
Then he nodded.
“You're right.””
He stood.
“I won't ask you to forgive me. I'll cooperate with the investigation. Whatever happens, I'll tell them what I know.””
At the door, he turned.
“Alicia, there's something on that recording you need to know about.””
My pulse quickened.
“What?””
He looked as though he regretted coming.
“The camera in the study captured a conversation between Mom and me before the fall.””
“What conversation?””
His jaw tightened.
“I told her the transfer couldn't proceed without your authorization. She told me she had another way to get your cooperation.””
I felt cold.
“What did she mean?””
“I don't know. I swear I don't.””
“You were standing in the room with her!””
“I know what I heard. I don't know what she intended to do.””
He looked at me helplessly.
“I'm sorry.””
I turned my face away.
“Leave, Devin.””
He left without another word.
That evening, Detective Harris called.
“The footage review has established a sequence of events that requires further investigation,” she said.
“I'm not able to discuss every detail over the phone, but we have confirmed that the camera captured your mother-in-law's physical contact with you.””
I sat upright.
“So it shows the shove?””
“Yes. The footage is being preserved as evidence. We're also examining the events in the study before the incident.””
My eyes filled with tears.
For days, I had been terrified that nobody would believe me.
Now I finally knew there was a recording.
A record that didn't care how wealthy Margaret was, how respected the Carter family appeared, or how confidently she told people I was lying.
But Detective Harris wasn't finished.
“There's another issue, Mrs. Carter. The study footage contains a conversation concerning your inheritance. We're reviewing that alongside the financial documents.””
I gripped the phone.
“Does Devin appear in it?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“And Margaret?””
“Yes.””
When the call ended, I sat in silence.
The recording would prove what Margaret had done to me.
May you like
But it might also reveal what Devin had been willing to do before she pushed me down the stairs.
And I was no longer certain which truth would hurt more.
