Chapter 8: The Birthday Party Was Never an Accident
Vanessa was waiting in the living room when Marcus arrived home that evening.
The birthday decorations were still hanging from the ceiling, but most of the guests had left. Deflated balloons lay beside the sofa. A half-eaten cake sat beneath a plastic cover, and discarded paper plates filled the kitchen trash can.
Noah was upstairs.
Vanessa stood beside the dining table wearing a white blouse and black trousers. Her red party dress hung over the back of a chair.
She had changed her clothes, washed away her makeup, and arranged the room as though the afternoon had been perfectly ordinary.
Marcus stopped just inside the doorway.
"Where's Noah?""
"Upstairs.""
"Is he okay?""
"He's upset because you disappeared.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You pulled him away from his grandmother while he was crying.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I wasn't going to let him throw a tantrum in front of our guests.""
"He was saying goodbye to someone he loves.""
"He'll get over it.""
Marcus felt his jaw tighten.
For once, he didn't swallow the response.
"Don't talk about our son as if his feelings are an inconvenience.""
Vanessa blinked.
Then she laughed softly.
"Wow. Your mother has really worked on you.""
"This isn't about my mother.""
"Everything is about your mother now.""
Marcus placed his phone on the table.
"I need you to explain the compensation agreement.""
Vanessa's expression shifted.
"I already told you. I don't know what you're talking about.""
"The board has the documents.""
"Then let them review them.""
"They have a signature that looks like mine.""
She looked away.
"Maybe you signed it and forgot.""
"I didn't.""
"Marcus, you sign hundreds of things.""
"Not agreements giving you a percentage of my compensation.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Do you know what it's like being married to someone who treats every promotion like a personal victory but never thinks about what it means for his family?""
"I wanted the promotion because I worked for it.""
"And I supported you.""
"Then why did you submit paperwork without telling me?""
Her voice rose.
"Because if I'd asked you, you'd have said no!""
The words hung between them.
Marcus stared at her.
Vanessa realized what she had admitted.
She quickly looked toward the kitchen.
"That's not what I meant.""
"What did you mean?""
"I meant you always overthink everything. You worry about appearances. You worry about whether everyone approves of you. I was trying to make sure our future was secure.""
"By forging my signature?""
"I didn't forge anything.""
"Then why did you say you'd have to do it without asking me?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Marcus picked up his phone.
"I have the messages. The documents. The access records. The company is investigating all of it.""
Her face hardened.
"Your mother is using the company to destroy our marriage.""
"No. You submitted an agreement I never approved.""
"Because I knew you'd let her talk you out of it!""
He took a slow breath.
"Why did you throw her out today?""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Because I didn't want her staying in my house.""
"You invited her.""
"I changed my mind.""
"Why today?""
"Because it was Noah's birthday, and I wanted the day to be about our family.""
Marcus looked at the cake.
"She is our family.""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Not if she keeps interfering.""
He watched her carefully.
"Did you know she would be attending the board meeting?""
Vanessa said nothing.
"Did you know she had the authority to suspend the vote?""
Her eyes flicked toward his phone.
That was answer enough.
Marcus felt the room tilt.
"You knew.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I knew she had connections. I didn't know she'd use them against you.""
"How did you know she was coming to the house today?""
She took a step back.
"Because I knew she would try to make herself part of your promotion.""
"How?""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
Then she said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
"Your mother has been watching you for years.""
He stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
"It means she knows people. She knows how the company works. She has access to things the rest of us don't.""
"And you thought throwing her out would stop her from attending the meeting?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Marcus looked at her as if he were seeing her for the first time.
"You didn't just want her out of the house.""
Her eyes filled with angry tears.
"I wanted her to stop controlling your life.""
"By humiliating her in front of Noah?""
"She always makes me feel like I can never measure up!""
The confession burst out of her.
Marcus stood still.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks angrily.
"She never says anything directly. She just looks at me like she knows I'm not good enough. She has this quiet way of making everyone think she's the better person.""
"She was sitting on the porch gathering her clothes.""
"Don't.""
"You threw her belongings outside.""
"Stop!""
Vanessa slammed her palm against the table.
A plastic fork jumped beside the cake.
"You weren't there when we got married!"" she shouted.
"You didn't see how she treated me when you weren't looking!""
Marcus frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
"She never liked me.""
"She welcomed you into our family.""
"She welcomed me because she had to. She always wanted you to marry someone she approved of, someone who would never challenge her.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's not true.""
"You don't know that!""
For several seconds, they stared at each other.
Then Marcus asked quietly, "Did you ever try to know her?""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
A small sound came from the staircase.
They both turned.
Noah stood on the bottom step, wearing his birthday pajamas. His eyes were swollen, and he held a small blue gift bag against his chest.
"Mom?"" he whispered.
Vanessa immediately changed her expression.
"Baby, go back upstairs.""
Noah looked at his father.
"Are you going to make Grandma come back?""
Marcus crouched.
"I don't know yet, sweetheart. But I promise I'll talk to her.""
"Mom said Grandma doesn't want to be around us anymore.""
Marcus looked up sharply.
Vanessa's face paled.
"Noah, I didn't say that.""
"You said she was leaving because she didn't love us enough to respect our house.""
The boy's lower lip trembled.
"Grandma loves me. She always comes when she says she will.""
Marcus felt something break inside his chest.
He held out his arms.
Noah ran to him.
Marcus wrapped him in a tight embrace, breathing in the familiar scent of his son's shampoo.
"I'm sorry," he whispered into the boy's hair.
"I'm so sorry.""
Noah clung to his shirt.
"Can I call Grandma?""
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
She stood frozen beside the table.
For the first time, she seemed unable to find a sentence that would make her the victim.
"Yes," Marcus told Noah.
"You can call her.""
He took out his phone and dialed Evelyn.
She answered after the second ring.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Noah burst into tears.
"Grandma, I didn't want you to leave!""
Evelyn's voice softened immediately.
"Oh, baby. I know.""
"I told Mom you didn't do anything.""
"You were very brave.""
"Are you coming back?""
There was a brief silence.
"Not tonight, sweetheart. But I love you, and I'll see you soon.""
Noah nodded against his father's chest, even though she couldn't see him.
"Can I bring you your present?""
"I would love that.""
After they ended the call, Marcus carried Noah upstairs and tucked him into bed. He stayed beside him until the boy's breathing became slow and even.
Then he returned downstairs.
Vanessa was sitting at the dining table, staring at the crushed blue ribbon from Evelyn's gift.
Marcus sat across from her.
"I need you to tell me everything.""
She looked up.
"About what?""
"About the agreement. About Lauren. About why you knew my mother would be at the board meeting.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"I can't.""
"Can't, or won't?""
She pressed her hands together.
"You don't understand what will happen if I tell you.""
"Then help me understand.""
Her eyes filled again.
"I thought I could fix everything before anyone found out.""
"Fix what?""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
Then she whispered, "The money.""
Marcus went still.
"What money?""
She stared at him for several seconds before reaching into her handbag.
She removed a folded statement and pushed it across the table.
Marcus opened it.
The account balance was negative.
The document showed repeated withdrawals, overdue payments, and a series of transfers to a private investment account. Several payments had been made to a company he didn't recognize.
At the bottom, a final notice warned that the account would be referred for collection if the outstanding balance wasn't settled.
Marcus looked up.
"How much do you owe?""
Vanessa began to cry.
"I thought the promotion would give us enough to cover it.""
"How much?""
She whispered the amount.
Marcus stared at her.
It was far more than he had imagined.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I thought I could solve it myself.""
"With my compensation?""
"I thought you'd understand once you saw what we'd gain.""
"How long has this been going on?""
Vanessa covered her face.
"Two years.""
Marcus sat motionless.
Two years of hidden debts.
Two years of financial decisions he had never known about.
Two years in which his wife had smiled beside him at family dinners while quietly preparing to use his promotion as a lifeline.
He looked down at the statement again.
Then he noticed the name of the company receiving the largest transfers.
It was the same consulting firm listed in the board's investigation.
Marcus lifted his eyes.
"Vanessa, what exactly did you buy from them?""
She wiped her face.
"I didn't buy anything.""
"Then why were you sending them money?""
Her lips trembled.
Before she could answer, a notification appeared on Marcus's phone.
Patricia Cole had sent an urgent message.
*We have identified the source of the disputed authorization. The evidence connects it to the consulting firm, but the person who instructed them to submit it is not Vanessa.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Across the table, Vanessa stopped crying.
She had read the message upside down.
Then she whispered, almost inaudibly, "Oh, God.""
Marcus slowly looked at her.
"Who instructed them?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I thought he had stopped.""
"Who?""
She stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.
"Marcus, you need to listen to me. Whatever your mother tells you tomorrow, don't believe that she's the only person who knows what's happening.""
He rose.
"Vanessa, who are you talking about?""
She backed toward the kitchen.
May you like
Then she said a name Marcus had not heard in years.
His father's.
