Chapter 6 - VANESSA SAID SHE WANTED TO BE PAID FOR BEING A MOTHER

During formal statement months later, Vanessa admitted.

She had married me when Lily was three.

At first she loved caregiving.

Then resentment.

“I gave up my career.”

That was partly true.

She had worked in luxury event planning.

After marriage, she reduced work.

I never required completely.

But she became household manager.

Then she saw trust reimburse therapists, tutors, security.

She asked:

“Why does everyone get paid except me?”

Wrong framing.

Then Andrew, her brother, said:

“Because you’re doing unpaid care.”

Not inherently ridiculous.

Care work has value.

But stepparent compensation from child trust requires conflict safeguards.

Samantha said no.

Vanessa felt insulted.

Then she began documenting work.

Then Richard? We haven't introduced. Keep Andrew enough. Maybe a lawyer Victor Sloan helped file petition. Introduce now.

Andrew connected her to attorney Victor Sloan, who specialized in family fiduciary work.

Victor said there were lawful ways to compensate a family care representative when child had special needs.

Again true sometimes.

Then they needed “special needs.”

Lily did not have.

So behavior became path.

Victor did not tell Vanessa to abuse.

He did advise gather documentation and proposed petition.

When he received exaggerated reports, he failed to verify.

Then financial incentive.

Victor projected legal/management fees.

Andrew projected care fees.

Vanessa felt finally “recognized.”

Then injury.

She saw opportunity.

A temporarily dependent child.

She became angrier when Lily wanted me.

Then soup.

Why pour?

“I wanted her to stop acting helpless.”

Then:

“Did you know it would hurt emotionally?”

“Yes.”

“Did you twist cast knowing arm injured?”

“Yes.”

There.

No excuse.

Then:

“Were you trying to break it again?”

“No.”

Medical evidence supported no intent to re-break.

Then:

“Why tell Daniel she was dramatic?”

“Because if he believed her, I lost control.”

There.

Then:

“Did you love Lily?”

Vanessa cried.

“At first.”

Then:

“Later?”

“I resented her.”

Honest.

Then:

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

Again.

Love not safety.

Then plea.

Child endangerment/assault-related charge.

Fraud/forgery related to care petition and false invoices.

Restitution.

No unsupervised contact with Lily.

No fiduciary role involving minors.

Meaningful sentence/probation.

Andrew faced professional sanctions, fraud-related liability if knowingly billed false services, restitution.

Victor faced disciplinary consequences and charges where documents knowingly false.

Different culpability.

Then divorce.

Prenup.

No revenge poverty.

Vanessa left with lawful property after restitution.

No child contact unless Lily later chose.

Then she asked to send apology letter.

Therapist reviewed.

Lily, I am sorry I made you clean while you were hurt.

I am sorry I poured soup on purpose.

I am sorry I touched your cast to scare you.

I am sorry I called your pain manipulation because I wanted your father to trust me instead of checking.

Specific.

Then:

You did not owe me obedience to prove I was your family.

May you like

Good.

Lily did not read until older.
