Chapter 14 - RICHARD CAME BACK AS A BROTHER, NOT AN EXECUTIVERichard never returned to Mercer Medical Logistics.

That was permanent.

The board did not trust him with governance.

Neither did I.

But family is messier than corporations.

Years passed.

Mom gradually allowed contact.

Lunch.

Then Thanksgiving.

No business discussions.

One Christmas, Richard washed dishes beside me.

He said:

“I still miss the company.”

“I know.”

“Do you think I ever go back?”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

I expected anger.

Instead:

“I think part of me needed you to say it.”

“Why?”

“So I’d stop imagining time would erase it.”

That was surprisingly mature.

Then:

“Do you trust me?”

“As a brother in a kitchen?”

He laughed.

“Yes.”

“With Mom’s voting shares?”

“No.”

“Also fair.”

Boundaries became specific.

Not total exile.

Not automatic restoration.

Richard later worked for a healthcare nonprofit.

Lower salary.

Less prestige.

He seemed calmer.

Maybe because he changed.

Maybe because he had fewer opportunities to confuse urgency with entitlement.

I did not romanticize it.

People can improve and still remain unsuitable for certain roles.
