Chapter 8 - NATHAN CAME HOME WITHOUT A TITLE

Years later Nathan completed sentence/terms.
No company role.
No family office.
He lived modestly.
He asked to meet.
I agreed at café.
He looked older.
“Ethan.”
“Nathan.”
Then silence.
He said:
“I heard Mom died.”
He had been allowed funeral? Maybe still incarcerated then, attended remotely? Let's say she died after release? Hmm. Better he was on supervised release and attended funeral at back. Fine.
Then:
“I didn’t know if you’d speak to me.”
“I didn’t either.”
Then he apologized.
Not general.
“For forging your signature.”
“For telling Vanessa Mom was confused.”
“For moving money.”
“For making you defend company mess.”
Then:
“For using Mom’s illness.”
I listened.
Then he asked:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Trust?”
“No.”
He nodded.
Fair.
Then:
“Can that change?”
“Maybe in personal life.”
“Business?”
“No.”
Permanent boundary.
He accepted.
Then he said:
“Harbor Point wasn’t worth any of it.”
Obviously.
Then:
“I thought if it worked, everyone would call me genius.”
There.
He wanted recognition.
Then:
“You know what Mom said?”
“What?”
“You already had yourself.”
He cried.
Then we started occasional contact.
Birthdays.
Coffee.
No money.
No investments.
When he asked to borrow $20,000 for business idea years later?
I said no.
Not punishment.
Boundary.
He accepted.
That was growth.
Then Vanessa.
I saw her once after probation ended.
She had rebuilt career.
She asked:
“Can I apologize in person?”
I agreed.
She said:
“I blamed your traveling for why I did not feel equal.”
Then:
“You did travel too much.”
“Yes.”
“But that didn’t make stealing right.”
“No.”
Then:
“You didn’t cause what I did.”
Good.
Then I asked:
“Why Mom?”
“Because Nathan taught me to see her as obstacle.”
She paused.
“And I was willing.”
There.
Then:
“Did you ever think about killing her?”
“No.”
Immediate.
“I thought about her dying naturally and what documents would mean.”
Still disturbing.
Then:
“When I touched oxygen, I only wanted her speech stopped.”
“I know.”
No minimization.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I said:
“I believe you.”
Not same as forgiveness.
May you like
Then left.
No reconciliation.
