Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal

“Ask your father why he already gave me permission to kill her.””

Calvin's words hung over the storage yard.

Snow drifted between us.

Vanessa stood with a gun pressed against her temple, her Christmas dress soaked at the hem from the snow.

My father was inside the SUV.

Andre stood beside me.

Neither of us moved.

Calvin smiled.

“You have ten seconds.””

“Don't shoot her,” I said.

“Then send me Andre.””

Andre stepped forward.

“No.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

“You heard him.””

“I heard him.””

“He wants me.””

“He wants both of us.””

Calvin laughed.

“Family loyalty. Beautiful.””

His finger rested against the trigger.

“Eight.””

Vanessa's eyes met mine.

There was terror in them.

But underneath it, something else.

She was shaking her head.

Barely.

No.

Don't do it.

I understood.

She didn't want Andre to surrender.

I looked toward the SUV.

Dad was sitting behind the wheel.

He wouldn't look at me.

My voice carried across the snow.

“Dad!””

His head slowly lifted.

“Did you tell Calvin he could kill Vanessa?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad!””

Robert opened the door.

He stepped out.

Snow landed on his hair.

“I didn't.””

Calvin smiled.

“You're still lying.””

Dad looked at him.

“I never gave you permission.””

“You did.””

“When?””

My mother stepped out of the SUV behind him.

She could barely stand.

“Robert,” she whispered.

He turned.

“I did not.””

Calvin's expression changed.

He seemed annoyed.

Then he pulled something from his coat.

A phone.

He held it up.

“You want proof?””

He pressed a button.

Dad's recorded voice came through the speaker.

“If she gets in the way, do what you have to do.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I looked at my father.

“That sounds like you.””

Robert's face collapsed.

“I never said that.””

Calvin replayed the recording.

The same sentence.

“If she gets in the way, do what you have to do.””

Andre looked at my father.

“Was that edited?””

Dad shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Calvin laughed.

“You always were easy to manipulate.””

I stared at him.

“Why are you doing this?””

“Because your grandfather built an empire on fear, and your father inherited the fear without understanding the empire.””

“What empire?””

Calvin pointed at Unit 17.

“The one behind that door.””

Andre's eyes narrowed.

“You mean the files.””

“No.””

Calvin smiled.

“The people.””

A cold feeling ran through me.

“What people?””

“The people your family paid.””

“The people who killed?””

“The people who obeyed.””

He glanced at my father.

“Your father didn't create anything. He inherited a machine.””

Dad's voice cracked.

“I tried to shut it down.””

“You tried to run from it.””

“I protected my children.””

“You protected yourself.””

Calvin pressed the gun harder against Vanessa's head.

“Now choose.””

I looked at Andre.

He nodded.

“No.””

I frowned.

He whispered, “Don't give him what he wants.””

“Then what do we do?””

“Trust me.””

He stepped away from me.

I grabbed his sleeve.

“That's what you've been saying all night.””

He looked at me.

“You're my brother.””

I froze.

Andre gave me a faint smile.

“That's the only thing tonight I'm sure about.””

Then he raised his voice.

“Calvin!””

Calvin looked at him.

“You want me?””

“Yes.””

“Then let Vanessa go.””

Calvin laughed.

“You think I'm stupid?””

“No.””

Andre reached into his coat.

Calvin immediately raised the gun.

“Slowly.””

Andre pulled out the black phone.

“The recording.””

Calvin's smile disappeared.

“I have another copy.””

The wind howled across the lot.

Calvin's expression hardened.

“Where?””

“Somewhere you'll never find it.””

“That can be changed.””

“You're not listening.””

Andre held up the phone.

“If I don't check in every hour, the recording gets sent to the police.””

Calvin stared at him.

“You're bluffing.””

Andre smiled.

“Try me.””

Calvin looked toward Dr. Bennett's stolen SUV.

Then at the storage unit.

Then back to Andre.

He was calculating.

I could almost see it.

Finally, he shoved Vanessa forward.

“Fine.””

She stumbled through the snow.

I ran toward her.

Andre stayed where he was.

Calvin lowered the gun.

“Trade.””

I wrapped an arm around Vanessa.

She whispered, “I'm sorry.””

“Later.””

I looked at Andre.

He slowly walked toward Calvin.

Three steps.

Four.

Five.

Then Calvin said, “Stop.””

Andre stopped.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Andre raised both hands.

Calvin glanced at me.

“Take your sister to the SUV.””

I pulled Vanessa away.

She whispered, “Marcus.””

“What?””

“He's lying.””

“About what?””

She looked at Andre.

“Everything.””

I stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“He doesn't want Andre.””

Her voice trembled.

“He wants you.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“I heard them talking.””

“When?””

“Before you arrived.””

“What did they say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said Andre was only bait.””

I looked at Calvin.

He was standing opposite Andre.

Too calm.

Too patient.

I remembered the photograph.

The fake message.

The hidden phone.

The recording.

Everything had been pushing me toward Unit 17.

Toward the ledger.

Toward this exact moment.

“What is inside the unit?”” I asked.

Vanessa stared at me.

“The original contract.””

“What contract?””

“The one with your name on it.””

I felt the cold even through my coat.

“What does it say?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you sure my name is on it?””

“Because I saw it.””

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

I looked at her.

“You opened Unit 17?””

She nodded.

“That's why Calvin started threatening me.””

“What did you see?””

She looked sick.

“A birth certificate.””

My heart stopped.

“Whose?””

“Yours.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“It had your name.””

“Of course it had my name.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not the way you think.””

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Your name was different.””

I couldn't move.

“What?””

She whispered it.

“Marcus Raymond Carter.””

I stared at her.

That's my name.

Just like that.

It shouldn't have mattered.

But the way she said it made my stomach twist.

Then she added:

“The document said you weren't Robert's biological son.””

Everything around me seemed to disappear.

I looked toward my father.

He was standing beside Mom.

His face told me Vanessa wasn't lying.

“Dad?””

He couldn't answer.

“Dad.””

Robert finally looked at me.

Tears ran down his cheeks.

“My son…”

“Am I your son?””

He shut his eyes.

“Not by blood.””

The words landed harder than any bullet.

Andre looked at him.

“You never told him?””

“I was protecting him.””

“From what?””

“From the truth.””

I stepped backward.

“So Andre is my brother?””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Your sister.””

“Then what am I?””

Mom moved toward me.

“You are our son.””

“But not his.””

She grabbed my hand.

“You were ours.””

“Who was my father?””

She couldn't speak.

Calvin answered from across the snow.

“Raymond.””

I turned.

He smiled.

“Your grandfather wasn't your grandfather.””

I stared at him.

“Then who was he?””

“Your mother's first husband.””

Mom's face went white.

Dad stepped forward.

“Calvin, stop.””

“You've lied to him for thirty-eight years.””

Dad shouted, “Enough!””

Calvin raised his gun.

“You were supposed to tell him.””

Robert looked at me.

“I was afraid.””

“Of Raymond?””

“No.””

He looked directly at Calvin.

“Of you.””

Calvin lowered the gun.

“You should have been.””

Andre suddenly moved.

He kicked snow toward Calvin's face and lunged.

Calvin fired.

The bullet struck Andre in the shoulder.

“ANDRE!””

He crashed into the snow.

Vanessa screamed.

I ran.

Calvin fired again.

I dropped behind the SUV.

Mom cried out.

Dad dragged her behind cover.

Andre was bleeding heavily.

Calvin moved toward him.

I grabbed a tire iron from the SUV.

Then I heard sirens.

Real sirens.

Not approaching.

Already inside the facility.

Police cruisers surged through the gate.

Officer Harris stepped out with his weapon drawn.

“Drop the gun!””

Calvin froze.

He looked at Harris.

Then laughed.

“Harris?””

The officer's face was pale.

“Calvin Carter.””

I stared at them.

They knew each other.

Harris aimed his weapon.

“You're under arrest.””

Calvin slowly lowered his gun.

Then he looked at me.

“You still don't understand.””

“What?””

He nodded toward my father.

“Ask him who signed your original birth certificate.””

I looked at Robert.

Harris shouted, “Marcus, get down!””

A shot cracked through the yard.

Calvin fell backward.

For one second, everyone froze.

Then Harris lowered his gun.

Calvin was on the ground.

Blood spread across his coat.

I turned toward my father.

“Who signed it?””

Dad was crying.

He finally answered.

“Raymond.””

I stared.

“Why would Raymond sign my birth certificate?””

Dad looked at Mom.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

“Because,” Robert whispered, “Raymond was listed as your father.””

My head spun.

Andre groaned behind me.

I rushed to him.

His hand grabbed mine.

“Marcus.””

“I'm here.””

He struggled to breathe.

“There is one thing you need to know.””

“What?””

His eyes drifted toward the storage unit.

“The files…”

He swallowed.

“…don't prove Raymond was your father.””

“Then what do they prove?””

Andre's grip tightened around my hand.

“They prove who your real father is.””

Behind us, someone screamed.

Dr. Bennett stepped from the shadows.

He was holding the missing black envelope.

And he wasn't alone.

A woman stood beside him.

Black.

Late sixties.

Elegant coat.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

My mother stared at her.

Then whispered a name I'd never heard before.

“Lydia.””

May you like

The woman looked at me.

“I've waited thirty-eight years to meet my son.””
