Chapter 9: My Sister's Hidden Inheritance

Olivia stood in the doorway, gripping her handbag with both hands.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my sister.

"You're the original trustee?""

She nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Since when?""

"Since Dad died.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Dad asked me not to.""

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"Olivia, please sit down.""

She did.

Her hands trembled as she placed her handbag on the table.

"I was twenty-two when Dad died," she began.

"He gave me a sealed envelope two months before he passed away.""

I frowned.

"Two months?""

"Yes. He said it was important, but he wanted me to open it only if someone tried to interfere with the family trust.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you know about this?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

Olivia swallowed.

"After Dad died, Edward told me the envelope was probably just sentimental paperwork. He said the estate had already been settled.""

"Did you believe him?""

"At first.""

She looked at me.

"But then I found a letter from Dad inside my college textbook.""

I stared at her.

"What letter?""

"One he had hidden before he went into the hospital.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small, yellowed envelope.

My father's handwriting was on the front.

*FOR OLIVIA. ONLY OPEN IF YOUR BROTHER NEEDS YOU.*

My chest tightened.

She placed it in front of me.

"I never wanted to keep secrets from you, Marcus.""

I picked up the envelope.

"Then why did you?""

"Because Dad told me that if the wrong person discovered the trust arrangement, both you and Ethan could lose everything.""

Ethan leaned forward.

"Why would I lose anything? I didn't even know the trust existed.""

Olivia looked at him.

"Because Dad believed someone might try to use your name to challenge the entire structure.""

She turned toward Daniel.

"Can I explain?""

He nodded.

Olivia continued.

"Dad created the Carter Family Legacy Trust after he discovered that Elaine was terminally ill. He wanted to make sure Ethan had something secure, even if the family never met.""

Ethan looked down.

Olivia's voice softened.

"He also wanted Marcus protected. He didn't want either of you fighting over money.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a certified copy of the trust appointment.

I unfolded the letter.

My dear Olivia,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.

Your brother Marcus has a generous heart. Sometimes too generous. He trusts people because he believes everyone should be treated with the same honesty he gives them.

I stopped reading.

My throat tightened.

My father knew me better than I had realized.

Ethan has spent much of his life believing I abandoned him. I cannot change the years he lost, but I can make sure he never has to beg for what should have been his.

I have established a trust for both my sons. Marcus will retain his rightful interests. Ethan will receive his own. Neither son should have to surrender his inheritance to make the other whole.

I turned the page.

Olivia, I am placing you in the position of independent trustee because you are the only person I believe will love both brothers without measuring what either one owns.

My eyes blurred.

I looked at Olivia.

She was crying.

I continued reading.

Edward knows about the arrangement. However, he does not control the trust. I have appointed an independent legal custodian. If Edward ever attempts to alter these documents, contact that person immediately.

At the bottom of the letter was a name.

*Margaret Ellis.*

Daniel leaned closer.

"Margaret Ellis?""

Olivia nodded.

"She's the original trustee's legal custodian. Dad told me she worked with him for nearly twenty years.""

Daniel searched his phone.

"She's still practicing.""

"Can you contact her?"" I asked.

"Yes.""

Olivia wiped her cheeks.

"There's something else Dad wanted me to tell you.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"He said Ethan was supposed to receive a letter on his thirtieth birthday.""

Ethan looked up.

"Why didn't I receive it?""

Olivia shook her head.

"Because Edward said he had already contacted you.""

Ethan frowned.

"He never contacted me.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Then Edward intercepted it.""

I turned toward the lawyer.

"Why?""

Ethan answered.

"Because my mother's letter probably contained information about the trust.""

He opened the envelope he had brought earlier.

"I have something else.""

He removed an old photograph.

It showed my father standing beside Elaine and a young Ethan.

On the back was a date.

Five years before my father died.

But there was another person in the photograph.

A woman standing several feet behind them.

Patricia.

I looked at Ethan.

"She was there?""

He nodded.

"My mother told me Patricia had arranged the meeting.""

"Why would she arrange it?""

"Because she wanted to know whether my father planned to change his will.""

Olivia shook her head.

"That doesn't make sense. Patricia wasn't part of our family.""

"She was Elaine's sister," Ethan replied.

"She knew about the relationship. She knew about the trust. And she knew exactly how much money was involved.""

I looked at the photograph again.

My father was smiling.

Ethan was holding his hand.

For a moment, I wondered what would have happened if I had been there.

Perhaps I would have met my brother years earlier.

Perhaps my father would have explained everything.

Perhaps Nia would never have had an opportunity to enter my life under false pretenses.

But there was no point in living inside a different version of the past.

I put the photograph down.

"Where is the original trust?""

Olivia answered immediately.

"In Dad's house.""

I looked at her.

"The house?""

She nodded.

"He kept the original documents in a fireproof safe in his study.""

"Do you have the combination?""

"Yes.""

Daniel stood.

"Then we need to secure them before Edward realizes what we've found.""

Rachel began gathering the papers.

"There's another concern.""

We turned toward her.

"The transfers from Marcus's accounts were not isolated. I've identified a payment scheduled for tomorrow morning.""

"How much?""

"Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

"To whom?""

Rachel turned her laptop toward me.

The recipient account belonged to a property company registered under a different name.

But the director was familiar.

*PATRICIA BENNETT.*

I looked at Daniel.

"Can we stop it?""

"Not without the bank's cooperation and a formal fraud report.""

"Then do it.""

Rachel nodded.

Olivia stood.

"I'll take you to Dad's house.""

I looked at my sister.

"Are you sure?""

She wiped her face.

"Marcus, I should have told you everything years ago. I can't change that. But I can help you protect what Dad left behind.""

Ethan picked up his jacket.

"I'm coming.""

I nodded.

"You're family. You have every right to be there.""

For the first time, he smiled faintly.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly lowered it.

"What happened?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Edward Hayes has filed an emergency application claiming the family trust is invalid.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"On what grounds?""

Daniel hesitated.

"He's claiming your father lacked the mental capacity to establish it.""

I stared at him.

"My father was perfectly healthy when he signed those documents.""

"I know.""

"Then who is supporting the claim?""

Daniel looked down at his phone.

"The application includes a medical statement from your father's physician.""

I felt a cold wave move through me.

"Which physician?""

He turned the screen toward me.

The signature belonged to Dr. Samuel Bennett.

Patricia's brother.

I looked at Olivia.

She slowly shook her head.

"No. Dad's doctor was Dr. Richard Collins.""

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly.""

I picked up the document.

The medical statement claimed my father had been suffering from severe cognitive impairment when he established the trust.

It was dated two months before his death.

But I remembered those months.

My father had driven himself to appointments. He had reviewed company reports. He had even corrected my calculations during a financial meeting.

He had known exactly what he was doing.

"This is another forgery," I said.

Daniel's voice was grim.

"Probably. But if the court accepts the application before we challenge it, the trust could be frozen.""

Ethan stepped closer.

"Then we need the original medical records.""

I nodded.

"Tomorrow morning.""

But Olivia was staring at the final page.

Her face had become strangely pale.

"What?"" I asked.

She pointed to the bottom of the document.

There was a witness signature.

A name I recognized immediately.

*OLIVIA CARTER.*

I looked at my sister.

"Liv?""

She shook her head violently.

"I never signed this.""

Daniel took the paper.

He examined the signature carefully.

Then he looked at Olivia.

"Are you certain?""

"Yes!""

Her voice broke.

"I have never seen this document before.""

I stared at the signature.

It looked real.

Too real.

And then Olivia whispered something that made the room fall silent.

"Someone stole Dad's old signature file from my apartment last month.""

I turned toward her.

"What signature file?""

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"The one Dad gave me before he died. It contains his original signatures, his medical records, and the trust documents.""

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed the inside of my father's study.

The fireproof safe was open.

The shelves were empty.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*STOP LOOKING FOR THE ORIGINAL TRUST. IT'S ALREADY IN OUR HANDS.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*AND IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO OPENED THE SAFE, ASK YOUR SISTER WHERE SHE WAS LAST NIGHT.*

I slowly turned toward Olivia.

She looked terrified.

But she wasn't looking at me.

May you like

She was looking at Ethan.

And Ethan was looking at her as though he had just recognized something he had been trying to forget for years.
