Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Everything
I forwarded the email to Margaret immediately.
She called less than a minute later.
“Do not go anywhere alone.””
“But who sent it?””
“The address appears to be newly created. We can't identify the sender yet.””
“What if this person knows something important?””
“Then we find a safe way to verify it.””
I enlarged the photograph.
Daniel was wearing the gray suit I had bought him for his birthday.
Vanessa stood beside him in a cream coat.
Patricia was holding a thick envelope.
Behind them was the entrance to a private banking office.
I recognized the building.
It was where Daniel had taken me to open our original business account.
I remembered the day clearly.
We had sat in a glass-walled office while Daniel explained how important it was to build a company with a strong financial foundation.
He had held my hand and promised that everything we built would belong to both of us.
Now he was using the same building to steal it.
“Margaret,” I said, “I want to know what they're doing.””
“Then we'll find out properly. I'll contact the bank through the legal channels. Meanwhile, you need somewhere safe to stay.””
I looked toward the bedroom.
“Daniel is still in the house.””
“Can you leave?””
“Yes.””
“Do it while he's away. Take your essential documents and don't tell him where you're going.””
I packed a suitcase that afternoon.
Before leaving, I walked through the house one final time.
The framed wedding photograph still stood on the living room shelf.
Daniel had his arm around my waist, smiling at the camera.
I remembered that day.
He had cried during his vows.
He had promised never to make me feel alone.
I picked up the photograph.
For a moment, I considered throwing it against the wall.
Instead, I placed it face down.
Then I left.
I checked into a hotel under my own name and sent the address to Margaret.
At 7:15 p.m., Daniel called.
“Where are you?””
I didn't answer.
“Nia, I'm not playing games.””
I remained silent.
“Your things are missing.””
Still nothing.
He exhaled.
“Listen. Mom is worried about you. Brielle is making everything worse. Let's meet tomorrow and settle this.””
“Settle what?””
“The business transfer.””
I almost laughed.
“So you admit there is a business transfer?””
He paused.
Then he corrected himself.
“I mean the paperwork.””
“What paperwork, Daniel?””
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””
“No. I know about the forged signatures. I know about the loan.
I know about Vanessa. What I don't know is why you thought I would sign away a company I built.””
His voice dropped.
“You didn't build it alone.””
“I never said I did.””
“You always wanted control.””
I closed my eyes.
“Goodnight, Daniel.””
“Nia, wait.””
I ended the call.
At 8:02 p.m., another email arrived.
This time, the sender included a name.
*Vanessa Reed.*
The message was short.
*I know you probably hate me. I understand. But Daniel lied to both of us.
I have documents you need to see. Please meet me tomorrow. I won't ask you to trust me.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I forwarded it to Margaret.
Her response came quickly.
If she has evidence, we can arrange a meeting with legal representation present.
The following morning, Margaret's assistant arranged a conference room at her office.
Vanessa arrived at 10:30 a.m.
She looked nothing like the polished woman in Daniel's photographs.
Her hair was tied back. Her makeup was minimal. She carried a brown leather folder and kept checking the hallway.
When she entered, she looked directly at me.
“I'm sorry.””
I didn't answer.
Margaret closed the conference room door.
“Let's begin with why you're here.””
Vanessa placed the folder on the table.
“Daniel told me his marriage was over.””
I looked at her.
“When?””
“Last December.””
“He told me he wanted to renew our vows last December.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
I felt something twist inside me.
“How long have you been seeing him?””
“About ten months.””
Ten months.
Ten months of Christmas dinners, family gatherings, and Daniel kissing my forehead before leaving for work.
I kept my expression still.
“Why did you contact me?””
“Because he told me the company was legally his. He said you had already agreed to transfer ownership.””
I looked at Margaret.
She remained silent.
Vanessa continued.
“He said the house was being sold because you wanted to move abroad. He told me you were aware of everything.””
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were bank transfer records, email printouts, and a series of screenshots.
“I worked as Daniel's executive assistant. I handled some of his financial correspondence.””
She pointed to a document.
“This is an account Daniel opened using your business details.””
I leaned forward.
The account number was unfamiliar.
“What is it?””
“A holding account. Daniel told me it was temporary. He said the money would be transferred into the company once the ownership paperwork was complete.””
“How much?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“More than three hundred thousand dollars.””
I looked at the bank statements.
There were transfers from Daniel's company, payments from the secured credit facility, and several deposits from accounts I didn't recognize.
Then I noticed something.
“Why is there a transfer to Patricia?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel said it was repayment for money his mother had invested.””
“How much?””
“Forty-eight thousand.””
I looked at the date.
The transfer had happened three days after the mortgage loan was released.
Margaret wrote something in her notebook.
“Do you have evidence that this money came from the loan secured against Nia's property?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I have the transaction references.””
Margaret examined the pages.
“That's useful. We'll need the original records.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Why did you stay with him?””
She looked at me.
“Because he told me you were financially controlling. He said he was trapped in a marriage where he had to ask permission to spend his own money.””
I almost smiled.
“Interesting.””
“He also said he was building a future with me.””
“And now?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Last week, he told me something that made me realize I was being used.””
“What?””
“He said that after Friday, everything would be different. He said he would finally have access to the money he needed, and then he could stop pretending.””
I stared at her.
“Pretending to what?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“To be in love with me.””
The room went silent.
She continued.
“He said I was useful because I understood his business. But once the company was transferred, he planned to move the money and disappear.””
I looked at Margaret.
She didn't react, but her pen stopped moving.
Vanessa pulled out another document.
“This is the part I think you need most.””
It was an email exchange between Daniel and Patricia.
The subject line read:
*Friday — Final Arrangements.*
I read the first message.
Patricia had written:
Make sure she signs everything before the bank meeting. Once the shares are transferred, we won't have to deal with her questions.
Daniel replied:
She'll sign. She always does when I tell her it's for the family.
I read the sentence again.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Then I reached the next message.
Patricia had written:
And what about the house?
Daniel's reply was only one line.
The house is already taken care of. She just doesn't know it yet.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Margaret immediately took photographs of the emails.
“Where did these come from?””
“Daniel's business account. I downloaded them before he changed the password.””
“Can you authenticate them?””
“I can provide the original email files.””
Margaret nodded.
“That will help.””
I turned back to Vanessa.
“Why did you use my anniversary reservation under Brielle's name?””
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
“Daniel asked Brielle to book it because he didn't want your name appearing on the hotel confirmation. He told her it was for a family meeting.””
“So who was supposed to be there?””
“Daniel, me, Patricia, and a financial adviser.””
I frowned.
“A financial adviser?””
“Yes. Daniel said the adviser would finalize the transfer.””
Margaret leaned forward.
“Do you know the adviser's name?””
Vanessa opened her phone.
She showed us a contact.
*Martin Hale — Private Wealth Consultant.*
Margaret wrote it down.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
“There's one more thing.””
She looked directly at me.
“Daniel told Martin that you were going to be unavailable on Friday.””
“Unavailable?””
“He said you would be out of town.””
I shook my head.
“I never agreed to go anywhere.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know. That's why I became suspicious.””
She pulled out her phone and opened a photograph.
It showed a printed document sitting on Daniel's desk.
At the top was my name.
Below it was a statement declaring that I had voluntarily resigned from my position as director of Carter Strategic Holdings.
But it wasn't the resignation that frightened me.
It was the date.
Friday.
The document had already been signed.
My signature was at the bottom.
I turned toward Margaret.
“I didn't sign this.””
“I know,” she said.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel told me he had a plan to make sure nobody questioned your absence during the transfer.””
“What plan?””
She hesitated.
Then she showed us a message from Daniel.
*Daniel: Once everything is finalized, tell them Nia is dealing with a personal emergency. Nobody needs to know where she is.*
I felt the room tilt.
Margaret took the phone and photographed the message.
Then she stood.
“We're contacting the relevant authorities and the company registry today. This transfer must be challenged before Friday.””
Vanessa began crying quietly.
“I didn't know it would go this far.””
I looked at her.
“Neither did I.””
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Martin Hale. Daniel Carter asked me to contact you regarding an important business matter.””
I looked at Margaret.
She gestured for me to put the call on speaker.
Martin continued.
“Your husband tells me there has been some confusion regarding the ownership restructuring.””
“What restructuring?””
“The transfer of Carter Strategic Holdings. We have a meeting scheduled for Friday.””
“I never agreed to transfer my company.””
There was a brief silence.
Then Martin said, “That's strange. Mr. Carter provided us with a signed authorization from you.””
Margaret leaned closer.
“Mr. Hale, this is Margaret Lewis, legal counsel for Nia Carter. Please direct all further communication through my office.””
Martin cleared his throat.
“Of course.””
Then, before ending the call, he added:
“However, I should warn you that Daniel has already submitted the final documents. If you intend to challenge the transaction, you may have very little time.””
The call ended.
I looked at Margaret.
She was already reaching for her phone.
Then my own phone lit up again.
A message from Daniel.
*Daniel: I hope you're enjoying your little investigation. Friday is going to be a very important day. Make sure you're there.*
A second message appeared.
*Daniel: And bring your original company ownership certificate. You'll need it to sign the final papers.*
I stared at the screen.
He still believed I would show up and surrender everything.
But this time, I wasn't going to walk into his meeting as his obedient wife.
I was going to walk in with a lawyer.
And I had no idea that Daniel had already invited someone else to witness the transfer.
Someone who could prove exactly how far he was willing to go.
May you like
Someone whose name appeared on the final document.
*My mother.*
