Chapter 9: The Bank Called My Son a Borrower

The bank's fraud officer arrived at Eleanor's office the following morning.

His name was Richard Coleman.

He carried a briefcase, a laptop, and a folder containing the loan application.

He looked uncomfortable from the moment he entered.

"Mr. Carter, I want to make something clear," he said.

"Our institution takes identity fraud allegations seriously. However, the application currently appears complete.""

Daniel sat beside me.

"I didn't apply for that loan.""

Richard opened the folder.

"Your name, date of birth, identification number, and electronic signature are included.""

"My wife had access to some of my information.""

Richard looked up.

"Was she authorized to submit financial applications on your behalf?""

"No.""

"Did you give anyone permission to use your property as collateral?""

"No.""

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Then the bank should immediately flag the application as disputed.""

Richard nodded.

"That's why I'm here.""

He turned to the laptop.

"The original application was submitted through an online business portal on September second.""

"Who submitted it?"" Eleanor asked.

"The account administrator was listed as Thomas Carter.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

Thomas.

Always Thomas.

Richard continued.

"The loan was structured as a property-backed development facility. The collateral was identified as the remaining Carter estate.""

Eleanor corrected him.

"Mrs. Carter's property.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes. The applicant claimed to hold authorization from both the owner and the designated family successor.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Why would my name be involved if I wasn't the owner?""

"Because the application represented you as the successor trustee.""

Eleanor immediately asked for the supporting documents.

Richard opened another file.

The first page contained my supposed signature.

The second contained Daniel's.

The third was a certificate claiming that the family trust had been dissolved.

I stared at the paper.

"Who issued this certificate?""

Richard checked.

"An independent legal consultant named Thomas Carter.""

Eleanor laughed once, without humor.

"Thomas cannot dissolve a family trust by writing himself a certificate.""

Richard looked embarrassed.

"I understand that now.""

Eleanor examined the remaining pages.

"How much money has actually been released?""

Richard checked the account records.

"Two hundred and ten thousand dollars.""

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

"Where did it go?""

"One hundred and fifty thousand was transferred to Lakeside Renewal Group. Sixty thousand went to a private account.""

"Whose account?""

Richard turned the page.

"Thomas Carter.""

I looked at my son.

He was staring at the numbers.

"He's stolen more than two hundred thousand dollars using my name.""

Richard nodded.

"At this stage, we can freeze the remaining credit facility while the investigation proceeds.""

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Do that immediately.""

Richard made several calls.

Twenty minutes later, he confirmed that the remaining funds had been frozen.

It was the first good news we had received in days.

But Eleanor wasn't smiling.

"Mr. Coleman, I also need a complete record of every device, IP address, and authentication method used to submit the application.""

Richard nodded.

"I'll arrange that.""

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"There's something else.""

Everyone looked at him.

He took out his phone.

"I think Tiffany has been using my old laptop.""

Eleanor asked why.

"Because I found a notification last night. Someone tried to access my bank account from a device I haven't used in months.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Do you still have the laptop?""

Daniel nodded.

"It's at the apartment.""

"Don't turn it on," Eleanor instructed.

"Don't attempt to access anything. We'll arrange for it to be examined properly.""

Daniel stared at the table.

"I should have seen this coming.""

I reached for his hand.

"Daniel, you cannot change what happened. But you can decide what happens next.""

He nodded.

That afternoon, we visited the apartment.

The building manager let us in after Daniel provided proof that he was a tenant.

The place looked exactly as it had during their engagement.

Cream-colored sofas.

A marble dining table.

Designer lamps.

A large photograph from their vacation in Italy.

Tiffany's clothes were still hanging in the bedroom closet.

Her wedding dress had been removed.

Daniel walked through the living room slowly.

"She was planning to leave me.""

I didn't answer.

He opened a drawer and found a stack of envelopes.

Several were from credit card companies.

One was from a private lender.

Another contained a payment demand for $74,000.

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.

"Mom, I didn't know we owed all this.""

I picked up the envelopes.

There were bills for luxury shopping, travel, jewelry, and private events.

Some accounts were in Tiffany's name.

Others were in both their names.

Then I found a small notebook.

It contained handwritten financial notes.

The first page listed the wedding expenses.

The second listed money received from the property company.

The third contained a column titled:

*EXIT PLAN.*

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

There were several entries.

- Sell the remaining property. - Transfer funds overseas. - Leave before the bank investigation.

- Daniel handles remaining debt. - Margaret cannot prove the original documents were forged.

I read the last line again.

If Margaret becomes difficult, use the hospital records.

I looked at Daniel.

"What hospital records?""

He took the notebook.

His expression changed.

"These are Dad's medical records.""

I frowned.

"Why would she have those?""

He turned several pages.

There was a photocopy of Robert's hospital admission form.

Another showed his medication schedule.

And beneath them was a handwritten note.

Use March 12 as the signing date. Robert was too ill to contradict anything.

I felt something inside me break.

They hadn't merely forged a document.

They had deliberately chosen the day my husband was weakest.

Daniel began shaking.

"Mom, I'm going to kill him.""

I grabbed his wrist.

"No.""

"He used Dad's illness!""

"And you will not destroy your life because of what he did.""

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the little boy again.

The boy who had been taught to be kind.

The boy who had once cried because he accidentally stepped on a bird's nest.

"Then what do I do?""

I took the notebook.

"You tell the truth. Every detail. Every signature.

Every conversation. You let the law deal with him.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

We collected the documents and left.

The next morning, Eleanor received confirmation that the bank had suspended the loan.

She also received a message from Northbridge Capital Partners.

They wanted an urgent meeting.

We arranged it for two o'clock.

Michael Grant, the acquisitions officer, arrived with two company attorneys.

He looked considerably less confident than he had during the wedding call.

"Mrs. Carter, I want to apologize for the distress this situation has caused.""

I remained seated.

"Your company attempted to buy my property using forged documents.""

Michael nodded.

"Based on information provided by Lakeside Renewal Group.""

"You didn't verify ownership?""

"We relied on the legal certification submitted with the application.""

Eleanor interrupted.

"That certification is now disputed.""

One of Northbridge's attorneys opened a folder.

"We have reviewed the original trust documents. There appears to be a serious problem with the proposed transaction.""

I looked at him.

"What problem?""

He explained that the development plan depended on unrestricted access across the northern section of the property.

However, the conservation restriction established in 1989 prohibited the proposed road construction without approval from the independent protector.

Eleanor nodded.

"Correct.""

The attorney continued.

"Additionally, our company was not informed that the original trust remained active.""

I stared at Michael.

"Would you have proceeded if you had known?""

"No.""

"Then why did you accept documents from Thomas without contacting me?""

He lowered his eyes.

"That was a failure in our due diligence.""

Eleanor placed a document on the table.

"Northbridge must now preserve all correspondence, payment records, and communications with Thomas and Tiffany Reynolds.""

Michael nodded.

"We will cooperate.""

Then he hesitated.

"There's something else.""

Eleanor looked up.

"What?""

Michael removed a photograph from his folder.

It showed Thomas standing beside a woman outside a private banking office.

The date was September first.

The woman was unfamiliar.

"Who is she?"" I asked.

Michael answered.

"Her name is Victoria Hayes. She represented the investment group that was supposed to finance the development.""

Eleanor examined the photograph.

"Why is this relevant?""

Michael placed another document beside it.

"Because Victoria Hayes was also listed as the recipient of a separate payment arrangement.""

I stared.

"What payment?""

"One million dollars.""

Daniel stood.

"One million?""

Michael nodded.

"That was the commission promised to the person who could secure control of the Carter property.""

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Who was supposed to receive it?""

Michael looked directly at me.

"According to the agreement, the payment was to be divided between Thomas Carter and Tiffany Reynolds.""

I closed my eyes.

They had planned everything.

The wedding.

The money transfers.

The false signatures.

The loan.

And the destruction of my home.

Then Michael said something unexpected.

"Mrs. Carter, there's another reason we wanted this meeting.""

He opened a final folder.

"Our legal department discovered that the original six acres you sold may also be affected by the same family trust.""

I sat forward.

"What does that mean?""

"It means the buyer may not have received unrestricted ownership.""

I felt my heart begin to race.

"Can I get that land back?""

Michael looked at Eleanor.

She answered carefully.

"Potentially. But we need to establish whether the right-of-first-refusal clause was violated and whether the buyer had notice of the restriction.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Mom, does that mean we could recover the six acres?""

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"It's possible.""

I stared at the photograph of Robert and the old oak tree.

For weeks, I had believed that selling those six acres was the greatest mistake of my life.

Now there was a chance that the land could return to the family.

But before I could say anything, Michael's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and suddenly stood.

"What do you mean the account has been emptied?""

He turned toward his attorney.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

"The $210,000 loan proceeds weren't the only funds moved.""

His face became tense.

"Thomas has just transferred another $300,000 from the development escrow account.""

Eleanor stood.

"To where?""

Michael checked the transaction report.

"An overseas account.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was already shaking his head.

Then Michael read the account holder's name aloud.

"Margaret Carter.""

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Someone had opened an overseas account in my name.

And according to the bank records, I was now the person who had received the stolen money.
