Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Buried
The words didn't make sense.
They entered my mind.
They sat there.
But they refused to become real.
“My brother killed your mother.””
My father had said it.
I heard every word.
But I couldn't understand them.
Because my entire life had been built around one story.
My mother died in an accident.
My father lost the woman he loved.
I lost my mother.
That was the tragedy.
That was the truth.
Except now every person in the room was standing inside a different version of my life.
And nobody knew which parts were real anymore.
I looked at my father.
“You knew?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“Ava—”
“You knew?””
My voice broke.
Not because I was angry.
Because I needed him to say no.
I needed him to tell me I misunderstood.
I needed one person in this house to give me something solid to hold onto.
But my father stayed silent.
And silence was an answer.
I stepped back.
“Dad.””
He moved toward me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice became louder.
“Everyone keeps saying they lied because they loved me.””
Nobody spoke.
“Do you know what that feels like?””
My father stopped.
“To find out your whole life was built on things people hid from you?””
I looked at Victoria.
“At least she admitted she lied.””
Then I looked at my father.
“But you?””
His expression broke.
“I wanted you to have a normal life.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Normal?””
I pointed around the room.
“A secret brother. A missing mother. A fake accident. People watching our house.””
I looked at Ethan.
“And a child who lost six years with his father.””
My father lowered his head.
I saw the guilt.
And somehow, that hurt even more.
Because I knew he wasn't pretending.
He really had been carrying this.
Alone.
Michael stepped forward.
“Ava.””
I turned toward him.
“Don't.””
He stopped.
“You all knew pieces.””
I looked around the room.
“You all knew pieces of my life.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the rain blurred everything.
Just like my memories.
My mother smiling.
My father telling me she loved me.
The funeral.
The empty bedroom.
Everything suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.
“Tell me what happened.””
My father looked at me.
“All of it.””
He stayed quiet.
Then finally nodded.
“After your mother found out about Ethan, she came to me.””
I turned.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you know about him?””
His face tightened.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of you?””
“No.””
He looked toward the photograph.
“Of Daniel.””
Michael moved closer.
“Daniel had been using your family's accounts for years.””
My father nodded.
“He found ways to hide money. Create fake records. Make it look like everything was normal.””
“And my mother found out?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
“And him?””
My father swallowed.
“Ethan was proof.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Michael answered.
“Emily discovered Daniel had another life. Another identity. Another family.””
I felt sick.
“Daniel was Ethan's father?””
Everyone went quiet.
Then Victoria whispered:
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“Daniel was not Ethan's father.””
The room froze.
My father looked confused.
“Then why did Emily hide him?””
Victoria looked at Ethan.
“Because Daniel wanted people to believe he was.””
I felt like I was drowning in questions.
“Then who is?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan looked down.
Then quietly said:
“My mom said my dad was kind.””
Everyone turned.
The boy continued.
“She said he fixed broken things.””
My father's face changed.
I saw it before anyone else did.
Recognition.
Fear.
“David?””
He looked at Ethan.
Then whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
My father stepped back.
“That's impossible.””
Michael stared at him.
“David?””
My father looked like he had seen a ghost.
Then he said:
“Ethan's father wasn't Daniel.””
Nobody moved.
My father looked at the child.
“Ethan's father was…”
He stopped.
Like saying the name was impossible.
“Who?””
My voice barely came out.
My father looked at me.
And then he said:
“Me.””
The room went silent.
The world stopped.
I stared.
“What?””
My father looked devastated.
“I didn't know.””
I couldn't move.
“You didn't know?””
“No.””
“Dad, how could you not know you had a son?””
His eyes filled.
“Because your mother never told me.””
I shook my head.
This was too much.
Too many impossible things.
My mother had been alive.
Victoria had known.
Ethan was my brother.
And my father had never known he had another child.
“How?””
My father sat down.
Like the weight of twelve years finally became too heavy.
“Your mother and I separated briefly before you were born.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“It was only a few weeks.””
“Why don't I know this?””
“Because we fixed things.””
He looked at me.
“We got back together. We decided to never talk about that time again.””
Michael nodded.
“Emily discovered she was pregnant after they reunited.””
My father looked at Ethan.
“She must have been afraid.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knew.””
My father looked at me.
“Daniel knew everything.””
The pieces started connecting.
My father continued.
“He threatened Emily.””
My hands tightened.
“Threatened her with what?””
Michael answered.
“With taking Ethan away.””
I looked at Ethan.
The boy who had spent his whole life carrying a secret he didn't understand.
“So my mother ran.””
“Yes.””
“And she left me.””
My father's face broke.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“She tried to come back.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn't she?””
He didn't answer.
Michael did.
“Because someone stopped her.””
A silence followed.
Then my father's phone rang.
Again.
This time nobody moved.
Everyone stared.
Because we all knew.
Every call brought another piece of the nightmare.
My father answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
My father immediately stood.
“Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
My father's eyes darkened.
“You're alive.””
A pause.
Then the voice on the phone laughed.
“I always was.””
Everyone listened.
Daniel continued.
“You finally figured it out.””
My father gripped the phone.
“Where is Emily?””
Another laugh.
“Still asking the wrong question.””
“What do you want?””
“I want my family back.””
My father looked at Ethan.
“You lost that right.””
Daniel laughed again.
“Did I?””
Then his voice changed.
“You should ask Ava what she found in her mother's room.””
I froze.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
Daniel continued:
“She never told you, did she?””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother left something for you, Ava.””
I felt the room tilt.
“What?””
“Something she hid before she disappeared.””
My father stepped closer to the phone.
“Where is Emily?””
Daniel ignored him.
“Ava.””
My name.
Hearing him say my name made my skin crawl.
“Go to your mother's old bedroom.””
I stared.
“That house was sold years ago.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“No.””
My father froze.
“What?””
Daniel's voice lowered.
“You never sold it.””
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
Another secret.
Another one.
Daniel continued:
“You kept it exactly the same.””
My heart pounded.
Because suddenly I remembered.
The locked house.
The one my father told me was empty.
The one he never let me enter.
The one I thought was just a painful memory.
“Find the hidden compartment behind her mirror.””
Daniel's voice became almost a whisper.
“And you'll finally learn why your mother chose Ethan over coming home.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
My father looked at me.
I looked at him.
Neither of us moved.
Because for the first time...
I wasn't afraid of the truth.
I was afraid of what it would reveal.
May you like
And somewhere inside my mother's abandoned bedroom...
A secret had been waiting for me for twelve years.
