Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Name

I didn't scream.

I wanted to. Every muscle in my body demanded it.

But Lily was holding my hand, and Walter was standing beside me, watching the fear settle across my face.

So I locked my phone and took a breath.

Then another.

"Claire," Walter said gently, "what did he say?""

I looked at him.

"Marcus is inside my house.""

Walter closed his eyes.

"Then he knows.""

"Knows what?""

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

I stepped closer.

"I'm done with half-answers. You have my mother's photograph. You have a letter she wrote.

You know my uncle. And somebody is breaking into my house because of something that happened before I was born.""

My voice cracked.

"I have a daughter who deserves to know whether we're safe. So if you know something, tell me now.""

Walter's face crumpled.

"I wish I could.""

"That isn't good enough.""

"I know.""

Lily tugged at my sleeve.

"Mom, can we call the police?""

I looked down at her.

"Yes, baby.""

I dialed 911.

The operator answered, and I gave her our location, explained that an unknown man had entered my home, and described the black SUV outside. I told her that my uncle might be involved, but I made it clear that I hadn't seen him enter the property myself.

The operator instructed us to remain in a public place and wait for officers.

Walter sat on a low concrete planter while I held Lily close.

He looked smaller in the daylight than he had at the bus shelter.

"Did you know my mother was sick?"" I asked.

He stared at his hands.

"Yes.""

"Did you visit her before she died?""

His fingers stopped moving.

"Once.""

"When?""

"Near the end.""

I felt anger rise in my chest.

"You visited my dying mother, and I never knew?""

"I didn't see her in person.""

I stared at him.

"Then what does that mean?""

He reached inside his jacket and took out the folded letter he'd shown me earlier.

"I came to the hospital. Marcus was there. He told me she didn't want to see me.""

"Did you believe him?""

Walter's eyes lifted to mine.

"I wanted to believe him. It hurt less than thinking she might have wanted me there and someone had stopped me.""

The words settled between us.

For the first time, I understood that whatever the truth was, Walter hadn't simply been waiting for a convenient moment to reveal it.

He had been living inside the uncertainty.

Still, that didn't excuse the years of silence.

"What was your connection to my mother?"" I asked.

He looked at Lily, then back at me.

"Your mother and I shared something that Marcus thought belonged to him.""

"What?""

"Not money.""

"Then what?""

Walter's voice dropped.

"A promise.""

Before I could question him, a uniformed police officer approached. A second officer followed, carrying a notepad.

The first officer introduced herself as Officer Davis.

"Ms. Claire, we received your call. Are you the homeowner?""

"Yes.""

"Is the person inside someone you know?""

"My uncle. Marcus Bell.""

Officer Davis exchanged a brief glance with her partner.

"Did he have permission to enter?""

"No.""

"Has he threatened you directly?""

I showed her the security footage.

She watched the clip twice.

When Marcus addressed the camera, her expression tightened.

"We'll send officers to your residence," she said.

"For now, don't return there until we confirm the scene is safe.""

"What about my belongings? My daughter's things?""

"We'll help you arrange a safe retrieval.""

Officer Davis turned toward Walter.

"Sir, do you know why Mr. Bell would be at her home?""

Walter shook his head.

"No, officer.""

It was the same answer he'd given me.

This time, I didn't believe it.

Officer Davis asked us to wait while her partner contacted dispatch. As she walked a few feet away, Walter rose unsteadily from the planter.

"Claire, there's something I need you to understand.""

I crossed my arms.

"Go ahead.""

"Your mother didn't keep me away because she was ashamed of me.""

My throat tightened.

"Then why?""

He looked toward the street.

"Because she was trying to protect you from what happened the night you were born.""

I gripped Lily's shoulder.

"What happened?""

Walter's eyes filled.

"I was supposed to take you somewhere safe.""

I stared at him.

"Take me where?""

He shook his head, fighting for words.

"I never got the chance.""

"Why not?""

"Because someone changed the plan.""

I thought of the photograph again: my mother standing beside a younger Walter, holding a baby wrapped in a pale blanket.

My baby blanket.

I'd seen it in family albums. My mother had kept it in a cedar chest for years.

She once told me that it had been the first thing she ever bought for me.

But if Walter had been there when I was born, why had my mother never mentioned him?

And why had Marcus spent years making sure he stayed away?

My phone rang again.

This time, the number was familiar.

Denise.

I answered immediately.

"Where have you been?""

Her voice shook.

"Claire, I couldn't call you back. Someone came to my apartment.""

"Who?""

"I didn't see his face. He left a message on my door.""

"What did it say?""

"Stop looking for Claire.""

I closed my eyes.

"Denise, I need you to tell me the truth.""

"I will. I promise.""

"Then tell me what happened the night I was born.""

There was a long silence.

Then Denise whispered, "Your mother was terrified, Claire. Not of Walter. Of what your uncle was willing to do to keep a secret.""

I looked at Walter.

He had turned away, his shoulders shaking.

"What secret?"" I asked.

Denise drew a trembling breath.

"Your mother told me that if anything ever happened to her, I had to find the recording she made. She said it would explain why Walter disappeared from your life before you even had a chance to know him.""

"Where is the recording?""

"I told you. I have it.""

"Then send it to me.""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because it's not the only thing she left.""

I pressed the phone harder against my ear.

"What else?""

Denise's voice fell to a whisper.

"A hospital record. The original one. And Claire, the name on it isn't the name you think it is.""

My heart hammered.

"What are you talking about?""

Before Denise could answer, I heard a sharp crash on her end of the line.

She gasped.

Someone shouted.

Then the call cut off.

I stared at my phone.

"Denise?""

Nothing.

I called back.

Straight to voicemail.

Walter stepped toward me.

"What's happened?""

I looked up at him, and all the pieces seemed to move at once.

"My uncle is in my house. Someone has threatened Denise. And my mother left a recording that might explain everything.""

Walter's lips trembled.

"Then we need to find Denise before Marcus does.""

Officer Davis returned.

"Ms. Claire, we have an update from your residence.""

I turned toward her.

"What is it?""

She held up her phone, displaying a photograph taken by one of the responding officers.

My front door stood open.

The envelope was gone.

May you like

And on the hallway wall, written in thick black marker, were four words.

*ASK WALTER ABOUT THE HOSPITAL.*
