Chapter 8: What Rachel Tried to Protect

I stood motionless in the corridor.

The alarm continued to sound, sharp and relentless, while the security lights flashed above me.

Vanessa's words echoed in my head.

Daniel wasn't supposed to survive that night.

I pressed the phone against my ear.

“What night?””

She was breathing hard.

“Marcus, you need to leave the facility.””

“Answer me.””

“Please.””

“What happened to Daniel?””

A long silence followed.

Then she said, “The night everyone believed he died, there was an accident. A real one. Daniel was in the car.””

I gripped the phone.

“And?””

“And the police believed he was dead.””

“You said everyone believed he died. You didn't say he was dead.””

“Because he wasn't.””

I closed my eyes.

The alarm stopped abruptly.

Somewhere near the office, a man called out that the police had been notified. I could hear footsteps moving through the corridor.

I needed to leave.

But I couldn't walk away with half a confession and another envelope hidden in my brother's jacket.

“Vanessa, tell me why Rachel was at the hospital.””

“I don't know everything.””

“Stop saying that.””

“I am telling you the truth!””

“No. You're giving me pieces of it and hoping I'll be too exhausted to ask for the rest.””

She fell silent.

I walked back into unit 214 and shut the door halfway.

On the folding table, Rachel's documents remained spread out. I gathered them quickly, taking photographs of every page before returning the originals to their folders.

The notebook lay open where I had left it.

I flipped to the final entry.

Rachel's handwriting was smaller here, as though she had been writing in a hurry.

Daniel says the child is safe. Vanessa says the arrangement was never supposed to involve Marcus. Neither of them will tell me the whole truth.

I read the entry again.

The child.

I thought of the photograph of Rachel in the hospital, holding a newborn.

I had never seen that photograph before.

I had never heard Rachel mention a baby.

I had known every detail of Lily's birth. I had cut the cord, held my daughter against my chest, and cried when she opened her eyes for the first time.

There had been no other child.

At least, none I knew about.

I turned to the next page.

I cannot keep protecting them from the consequences of their choices. Marcus deserves to know what happened. Lily deserves the truth about her family.

The final sentence had been underlined twice.

I heard footsteps outside the unit.

I turned sharply.

The storage manager stood in the doorway, pale and visibly nervous.

“Sir, the police are on their way. You need to come with me.””

“I will. I just need one minute.””

He glanced at the open folders.

“Please don't remove anything else.””

“I won't.””

I closed the notebook and slipped it into my bag.

Then I noticed a small envelope taped beneath the folding table.

It had been hidden behind a metal support, out of sight unless someone crouched low enough to look underneath.

I pulled it free.

Rachel had written my name on the front.

Inside was a photograph and a note.

The photograph showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital entrance, holding a newborn carrier.

A man stood beside her, his face turned away from the camera.

The date was written on the back.

Two years before Vanessa and I married.

I unfolded the note.

Marcus, there is one question you must ask Vanessa before you believe anything she tells you.

Below it, Rachel had written a single line.

Ask her why she was at the hospital the night Daniel disappeared.

I stared at the photograph.

The newborn carrier was empty.

I could see the blanket folded inside it.

My phone vibrated again.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Why were you at the hospital the night Daniel disappeared?””

She made a small, strangled sound.

“Where did you find that?””

“Answer me.””

“Marcus, please don't do this over the phone.””

“Then tell me now.””

She began to cry.

“I was helping Rachel.””

“Helping her with what?””

“With the baby.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What baby?””

She didn't answer.

I felt a terrible coldness settle in my chest.

“Vanessa, whose baby was it?””

“Rachel's.””

I couldn't speak.

She rushed on, as though she feared I would hang up.

“Rachel had a baby before she died. A little girl. She told me she couldn't keep her safe at home.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Rachel had another child?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No! Not of you.””

“Then of whom?””

Vanessa's sob caught in her throat.

“Of Daniel.””

I stared at the hospital photograph.

Daniel had stood beside Rachel after his supposed death. Vanessa had carried a newborn away from the hospital. And Rachel had hidden evidence that something had happened to a child.

I forced myself to speak.

“Where is the baby now?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I swear I don't know.””

“Did you take her?””

“No.””

“Did Daniel?””

Vanessa was silent.

I heard a door slam on her end of the call.

Then she whispered, “Marcus, I have to tell you something about Lily.””

Every muscle in my body went rigid.

“What about Lily?””

“She was there the night Rachel went to the hospital.””

“That doesn't mean anything.””

“She saw the baby.””

I shook my head.

“Lily was five.””

“I know.””

“She wouldn't remember something like that.””

“She did remember. Rachel told me she asked about the baby for weeks.””

I thought of Lily's words in the storage room.

Mommy put something inside it before she went away.

I thought of the photograph she had saved from the fire, the way she had insisted that her mother had left something behind.

“Why did Rachel hide this from me?”” I asked.

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Because she believed someone in the family had arranged for the baby to disappear.””

The room seemed to stop moving.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I swear to you, Marcus. Rachel never told me who she suspected.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The man standing beside Vanessa had turned his face away from the camera, but I could see his left hand resting on the hospital door.

A gold wedding band glinted on his finger.

Daniel had worn a gold wedding band.

So had I.

I enlarged the photograph on my phone.

The man's sleeve was rolled back, revealing a dark mark on his wrist.

A crescent-shaped scar.

I knew that scar.

I had seen it when Daniel broke his arm climbing a fence as a teenager.

The man in the photograph was Daniel.

But that still didn't explain the baby.

I gathered the documents and stepped toward the unit door.

The manager was waiting in the corridor.

“Sir, we need to go.””

I nodded.

As we walked toward the office, my phone vibrated once more.

This time, the message came from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Only a photograph.

It showed Lily sitting at Denise's kitchen table, eating a sandwich while Bunny rested beside her plate.

My stomach dropped.

Beneath the picture was a single sentence.

*STOP LOOKING FOR THE CHILD, OR YOU'LL LOSE THE ONE YOU HAVE.*

I stopped walking.

The manager turned toward me.

“Sir?””

I couldn't answer.

Another message appeared.

*ASK VANESSA WHO SIGNED THE HOSPITAL PAPERS.*

Then my phone rang.

Denise's name flashed across the screen.

I answered immediately.

“Is Lily okay?””

Denise sounded frightened.

“Marcus, someone just came to my door.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

“I don't know. He said he was an old friend of yours.””

I could barely breathe.

“What did he want?””

Denise lowered her voice.

“He left something for Lily.””

“What?””

“A photograph.””

I closed my eyes.

“What was in the photograph, Denise?””

Her answer came in a whisper.

“It was a picture of Rachel holding a baby. And on the back, someone wrote Lily's full name.””

I stared at the phone.

May you like

Then Denise said the words that shattered whatever hope I had left.

“Marcus, the person who brought it said the baby in the photograph was Lily.””
