Chapter 9: The Man in the Photograph

Jessica brought the letter to Martha's office that afternoon.

It was written on plain white paper, dated four months before my wedding. Vanessa's handwriting was unmistakable, neat and sharply angled, as if even the letters were afraid to waste time.

Martha read it twice.

“There's no surname,” she said.

“Just Michael,” Jessica replied.

“But Vanessa mentioned him several times in her messages to Richard.””

I leaned over the desk.

“What did she say?””

Jessica unlocked her phone and opened the conversation.

One message read:

Michael still refuses to meet. If he tells Daniel what happened, the entire arrangement collapses.

Richard had answered:

He won't talk. He owes me too much.

Another message, sent two weeks later, was more alarming.

If the records are reviewed, Michael will be the first person they question.

I looked at Martha.

“Could Michael be a doctor?””

“Possibly. Or a nurse, an administrator, or someone else who had access to the hospital records. We shouldn't assume.””

Detective Harris had already been informed of the name. He was checking the hospital's historical staffing records and any available documentation related to the access requests.

But the name bothered me for another reason.

Michael was the name of Emily's older brother.

He had died in a motorcycle accident when he was twenty-two, years before Lily was born.

I mentioned it to Martha.

She shook her head.

“Then this is probably someone else. We need to establish his identity before drawing conclusions.””

Jessica scrolled through Vanessa's messages again.

“There's a photograph attached to one of the conversations.””

She turned the phone toward us.

The image showed Richard standing outside a restaurant with another man. The picture was grainy, taken from a distance, but the man's face was visible.

He appeared to be in his late forties, with dark hair graying at the temples and a narrow scar near his chin.

I didn't recognize him.

But Martha did.

She reached for the phone with trembling fingers.

“Where did you get this?””

“Vanessa sent it to Richard.””

Martha stared at the photograph.

“His name is Michael Grant.””

“Who is he?”” I asked.

Martha removed her glasses.

“He was a financial consultant who worked with your father years ago. He disappeared from the business records after an investigation into several disputed transactions.””

“Disputed transactions involving Richard?””

“Yes.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because the investigation was closed without a criminal finding, and the family wanted to move on. Your father believed the missing money had been recovered.””

“Was it?””

“I don't know.””

Martha opened her computer and began searching through the files she'd retained from Emily's estate.

After several minutes, she found a scanned letter.

It was from my father to Richard, dated nearly nine years earlier.

Richard,

I have reviewed the statements you provided. The discrepancy involving Michael Grant remains unresolved. I am giving you thirty days to produce the missing documentation. If you cannot, I will remove you from all family financial responsibilities.

The letter ended there.

No response was attached.

Martha looked at me.

“Your father may have suspected Richard long before Emily did.””

“Then why did he leave him in charge of the trust?””

“Perhaps he believed the problem had been resolved. Or perhaps he hoped Richard would correct his mistakes.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Can we find Michael?””

Detective Harris called twenty minutes later.

“We've identified Michael Grant through the hospital's old contractor records,” he said.

“He was employed by a company that handled medical billing and records administration. He had temporary access to certain files around the time your daughter was born.””

“Is he still working there?””

“No. The company closed several years ago. We're trying to locate him.””

“Do you know where he lives?””

“We have an address associated with an old financial record, but we need to verify that it's current.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Detective, if he knows something about Lily, I need to speak with him.””

“I understand. But please let us locate him first. If someone has been threatening people to keep them quiet, we don't want you walking into an unknown situation.””

I agreed.

For the next several hours, I stayed at Martha's office while she organized the evidence.

The forged documents suggested Vanessa wanted control of the house and the trust.

The messages suggested Richard was helping her.

The hospital records suggested someone had been investigating Lily's parentage.

And Michael Grant appeared to connect all three.

But one thing still made no sense.

If Richard had been hiding financial misconduct, why would he care who Lily's biological father was?

Unless the parentage question gave him some other advantage.

At six o'clock, my phone rang.

My mother.

“Daniel, there's someone here asking for you.””

“Who?””

“He says his name is Michael.””

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

“Mom, don't open the door.””

“I haven't. He's standing on the porch. He says he needs to tell you something about Emily.””

“Call the police. Stay inside.””

I told Martha what was happening, then drove toward my mother's house with Detective Harris on the phone.

When I arrived, a patrol car was already parked at the curb.

A man stood near the front steps, his hands visible at his sides.

He looked older than the photograph. His hair had thinned, and the scar near his chin was more pronounced. But there was no mistaking him.

Michael Grant.

The officer approached him while I stopped several feet away.

“Mr. Grant?”” I asked.

He turned toward me.

“Daniel Hayes?””

“Yes.””

He studied my face for a moment.

“You look like your father.””

I didn't answer.

“Why are you here?””

Michael glanced at the officer, then back at me.

“Because I made a promise to Emily, and I've spent three years regretting that I kept it.””

My heart hammered.

“What promise?””

“That I would stay silent until Lily was old enough to understand what happened.””

I took a step forward.

“What happened?””

Michael swallowed.

“Your wife discovered that the financial records connected to Lily's trust had been altered. She came to me because she believed I could prove who was responsible.””

“Richard?””

Michael nodded.

“But that wasn't the only thing she wanted to know.””

I felt my mouth go dry.

“What else?””

He looked toward the house, where my mother was watching through the window.

“Emily wanted to know whether the hospital had made a mistake when Lily was born.””

I stared at him.

“Did it?””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“I can't answer that without explaining what I found in the original records.””

“Then explain it.””

He shook his head.

“Not here. Richard has people watching your family. If he learns I'm talking to you, he may destroy the only evidence left.””

I thought of the photograph through my mother's window.

“Someone already threatened us.””

Michael's face tightened.

“Then we're running out of time.””

The officer asked him to accompany us to a secure location for a formal interview. Michael agreed, but before he entered the patrol car, he turned back toward me.

“Daniel, there's something you need to understand. Emily didn't hide the truth because she wanted to hurt you.””

“Then why did she hide it?””

His eyes glistened.

“Because she was trying to protect Lily from what the truth would do to her family.””

He paused.

“And because the person who could answer your question wasn't the person you think.””

I stared at him.

“Who are you talking about?””

Michael looked directly at me.

“Your father.””

I felt the world stop.

“My father was dead before Lily was born.””

“I know.””

“Then how could he know anything about what happened at the hospital?””

Michael's expression crumpled.

“Because your father was the one who asked me to change the records.””

The words struck harder than anything Vanessa had said.

I took a step back.

“What records?””

Michael opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

All the color drained from his face.

“Don't answer it,” I said.

He ignored me and pressed the button.

A distorted voice came through the speaker.

“You had one job, Michael.””

Michael's hand began to shake.

The voice continued.

“If you tell Daniel what happened that night, Lily will lose everything.””

Then the call ended.

Michael stared at the phone as if it had become something poisonous.

I looked at him.

“Who was that?””

He swallowed hard.

Then he gave me a name I had never expected to hear.

“Your uncle Richard.””

And for the first time, I understood that the truth about my daughter might not simply expose a family betrayal.

It might reveal that the man who had taught me right from wrong had spent years helping someone else rewrite our family's history.
