Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The police arrived within minutes.

The shooter was gone.

Nobody inside the house had been injured.

But the message remained on the computer.

Dad stared at it.

“They know where we are.”

Michael disconnected the system.

“They're inside the network.”

Dad looked at Lily.

“Who else knows you're here?”

“No one.”

“Think.”

She shook her head.

“Only the person who gave me the phone.”

“Who?”

“My foster mother.”

“Where is she?”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Dead.”

The room went silent.

Dad looked at me.

“Another connection.”

Michael nodded.

“Someone has been cleaning up witnesses.”

Then Robert called.

Dad answered.

“Where are you?”

Robert laughed.

“Still trying to solve your wife's murder?”

“You killed her.”

Silence.

Then Robert said:

“You finally understand.”

Dad's face hardened.

“Where is Clara?”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

Robert laughed.

“You're still calling her Vanessa.”

“Where is she?”

“You should ask your mother.”

Dad looked toward Grandma.

She began shaking.

Robert continued:

“You have one hour.”

“For what?”

“Bring the blue box to the old warehouse.”

“And if I don't?”

“You'll find out what happens to people who protect Ethan.”

The line went dead.

Dad looked at me.

“I am not going.”

Lily spoke.

“He wants you to.”

Michael nodded.

“It's a trap.”

“Then we don't walk into it.”

Dad called the police.

But before they could organize a plan, Grandma disappeared.

Her chair was empty.

The back door stood open.

Dad ran outside.

No sign of her.

Then his phone received a photograph.

Grandma was sitting in a chair inside a dark room.

A man stood behind her.

Robert.

The message said:

ONE HOUR.

Dad closed his eyes.

“I'll go.”

Michael grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“She's my mother.”

“And Robert wants exactly that reaction.”

Dad looked at me.

“Then I can't let him have Ethan.”

I stepped forward.

“I'm going too.”

“No.”

“You can't keep protecting me by lying.”

He stared at me.

“You're seven.”

“I know.”

“But I'm not stupid.”

He looked away.

Lily stepped beside me.

“He needs to know the truth.”

Dad shook his head.

“He shouldn't have to.”

I looked at him.

“Then tell me.”

My father finally broke.

He told me everything.

My mother had discovered Robert's plan.

She had created the trust.

She had hidden Lily.

She had secretly transferred the controlling shares.

Then she had been killed.

Dad had believed her death was an accident because Robert had fabricated the evidence.

For twelve years, Dad had unknowingly protected the man who destroyed our family.

I felt angry.

But not at Dad.

At everyone who had lied.

At everyone who had watched.

At everyone who had decided a child didn't deserve the truth.

We went to the warehouse.

Police surrounded the building.

Dad entered with Michael.

I stayed in the car with Lily.

Then we heard shouting.

The warehouse doors opened.

Robert dragged Grandma outside.

He held a gun.

Police ordered him to drop it.

Robert laughed.

Then he looked toward the car.

His eyes found me.

He smiled.

“Ethan.”

My father stepped forward.

“Leave him alone.”

Robert shook his head.

“He was always the problem.”

Then another car arrived.

Clara stepped out.

She was no longer pretending to be Vanessa.

She looked directly at my father.

“You destroyed everything.”

Dad stared.

“You murdered my wife.”

“She wasn't your wife anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

Clara smiled.

“She knew who I really was.”

Michael whispered:

“She's admitting it.”

Police moved forward.

But Clara pulled out a folder.

“Before you arrest me, ask your father what happened the night Lily was born.”

Dad froze.

My grandfather had died years earlier.

“What does my father have to do with Lily?”

Clara laughed.

“He knew.”

Then she looked at me.

“He knew Lily existed.”

I stared at my father.

“Dad?”

He looked shocked.

“I didn't.”

Clara smiled.

“Ask your mother.”

Grandma began crying.

“I am sorry.”

Dad stared.

“What did you do?”

Grandma whispered:

“I gave Lily away.”

Lily stepped forward.

“Why?”

Grandma couldn't look at her.

“Because your grandfather ordered me to.”

The warehouse became silent.

Lily's voice broke.

“Why?”

“Because he believed a girl couldn't inherit.”

My father looked horrified.

“He was going to kill her?”

Grandma nodded.

“So your mother gave Lily to Eleanor.”

Lily stepped back.

“You let me disappear.”

“I saved you.”

“You abandoned me.”

Grandma cried.

“I was trying to save you.”

Then Robert raised his weapon.

Police shouted.

A single movement followed.

He dropped the gun.

Security rushed him.

Clara tried to run.

She was stopped.

For the first time in twelve years, the people who had controlled my family were no longer free.

But Michael wasn't celebrating.

He was staring at the folder Clara had dropped.

“What is it?”

He opened it.

His face went pale.

Dad asked:

“What?”

Michael looked at me.

May you like

“There is another heir.”

Everyone froze.
