Chapter 4: The Signature That Shouldn't Have Been There

For several seconds, my father stared at the document without moving.

The birthday decorations swayed gently in the breeze coming through the dining-room windows. Sunlight spilled across the table, illuminating the pink cake, the abandoned presents, and the bank statement trembling between his fingers.

Then Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Did you forge my signature?””

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

“How dare you?””

“Answer the question.””

“You're standing in front of me accusing me of a felony because of a bank statement you don't even understand!””

Dad placed the document on the table.

“Then explain it.””

She snatched the paper, scanned it, and immediately shoved it back toward him.

“This is an authorization form. You signed it years ago. You probably don't remember.””

“I remember signing documents related to the trust. I don't remember authorizing a withdrawal of two hundred and forty thousand dollars.””

My knees nearly buckled.

Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.

I'd never seen that much money in my life. I'd never even owned a bicycle that cost more than a few hundred dollars.

Dad glanced at me and immediately softened his voice.

“Maya, sweetheart, sit down.””

I lowered myself into a chair.

He pulled another chair beside mine and placed his hand over my small, trembling fingers.

“I'm right here.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“Don't make promises you can't keep, Marcus. You travel constantly. You leave me to manage this household, the bills, the children, everything. Now you're acting as though I've been stealing from your daughter.””

“Were you?””

“I used money for the family!””

The admission came so quickly that even Vanessa seemed surprised by it.

Dad went completely still.

“What money?””

She pressed her lips together.

“The account.””

“Which account?””

“The family account!””

“That account was established specifically for Maya.””

Vanessa threw her hands up.

“And what was I supposed to do? Let money sit in a bank while we had expenses? Chloe needed school fees.

This house needed repairs. You wanted a certain lifestyle, Marcus. Somebody had to pay for it.””

Dad looked at her with disbelief.

“You used Maya's inheritance to pay our household expenses?””

“I borrowed it.””

“Where is it?””

She didn't answer.

He waited.

Outside the windows, a car rolled past the house. Somewhere upstairs, a door closed.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I intended to replace it.””

“When?””

“When things improved.””

“They have improved,” Dad replied.

“My business has had its most profitable year. You have had access to my income the entire time. Why didn't you replace it?””

Her eyes flashed.

“Because you kept spending money on things that didn't matter!””

“What things?””

“Your business trips. Your ridiculous investments. The charities you donate to. Everything except the people who actually live in this house!””

Dad slowly shook his head.

“You were free to discuss our budget with me. You were never free to take money from a child's protected account.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Your daughter had everything she needed.””

I stared at my damaged shoe beneath the table.

Dad followed my gaze.

“No,” he said quietly.

“She didn't.””

Vanessa's cheeks reddened.

“Oh, please. Don't pretend a pair of shoes proves anything. Maya is careless with her belongings.

She ruins clothes. She loses things. You know how she is.””

I felt the familiar urge to apologize.

My mouth even opened.

Then I remembered the nights I'd gone to bed hungry because Vanessa said I'd already eaten. The school trip I missed because she told Dad the fee had been paid when it hadn't. The birthday money my mother had left in a small envelope, which vanished the same week Vanessa reorganized my bedroom.

I closed my mouth.

Dad squeezed my hand.

“You don't have to defend yourself,” he told me.

Vanessa stared at us.

“Unbelievable. You're encouraging her to disrespect me.””

“No. I'm encouraging her to speak honestly.””

He picked up his phone and called the bank's fraud department.

Vanessa immediately began pacing.

“Marcus, think about what you're doing. If you report this, they'll investigate our finances. They'll freeze accounts.

They'll question me. Do you understand what that will do to Chloe?””

Dad spoke into the phone, gave his name, and requested the trust's transaction history.

Then he listened.

His expression grew increasingly troubled.

“Yes,” he said.

“I understand.””

He ended the call.

“What did they say?”” Vanessa demanded.

“The bank has flagged several transfers for review.””

She stopped pacing.

“How many?””

Dad looked at her.

“Seven.””

Her face went pale.

He opened another folder and began examining the statements. I could see dates, account numbers, and long strings of figures, but the numbers blurred together.

Then Dad pulled out a photocopy of an old authorization form.

“This is interesting.””

Vanessa didn't move.

Dad placed the form beside the statement.

“The withdrawal was authorized using my signature, but the bank says the original document was submitted electronically from a device registered to your email account.””

“That proves nothing.””

“The account recovery address was also yours.””

She shook her head.

“You gave me access to your email.””

“Not to impersonate me.””

“I didn't impersonate you!””

Dad stared at her.

“Then why does the bank have an electronic authorization I never submitted?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

I followed her gaze.

Chloe stood at the top of the stairs, holding a stuffed rabbit against her chest. Her pink birthday gown was still sparkling beneath the light from the landing.

She had heard everything.

“Mom?”” Chloe called.

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

“Go to your room, baby.””

“But did you take Maya's money?””

Vanessa looked as if her daughter had slapped her.

“Of course not!””

“Then why is Dad angry?””

“Because he's confused.””

Dad closed the folder.

“Chloe, nobody is angry with you.””

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“Mom said Maya's money was used to pay for my birthday party.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa spun around.

“Chloe!””

The little girl recoiled against the banister.

Dad rose slowly.

“Come downstairs, sweetheart.””

Chloe descended one step at a time, clutching the rabbit so tightly its ears twisted between her fingers.

When she reached the bottom, Dad knelt in front of her.

“What did your mother tell you?””

Chloe glanced at Vanessa.

“She said Maya's mother left money, but Maya was too young to need it. She said the money helped pay for our house and my school.””

Dad's face tightened.

“Did she say anything else?””

Chloe hesitated.

Then she whispered, “She said if Maya ever found out, we'd all lose everything.””

Vanessa lunged forward.

“That's enough!””

Dad stood between them.

“Do not frighten her.””

“I am her mother!””

“And she's a child.””

Vanessa looked at me, then at Chloe, then at the folder on the table.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that the people in the room were no longer accepting her explanations.

She straightened her dress.

“Fine,” she said.

“Investigate everything. You'll discover I was protecting this family.””

Dad picked up the authorization form.

“Perhaps. But there's one thing I still don't understand.””

He turned the paper toward her.

“If you had access to my email, why did you need to forge my signature at all?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Dad looked down at the document again.

Then he noticed something printed in tiny letters along the bottom edge.

A verification code.

And beside it, a timestamp showing the authorization had been completed while he was overseas.

Dad slowly lifted his eyes.

“Vanessa, you told me you were at your sister's house that evening.””

Her lips parted.

“You said you never touched the trust account.””

He held up the form.

“So where were you when this transaction was approved?””

Vanessa backed toward the table.

And when Dad reached for his phone again, she whispered something that made him stop.

May you like

“You don't understand,” she said.

“That money wasn't the only thing your first wife left behind.””
