Chapter 9: The Mother Who Came Back From The Dead
I forgot how to breathe.
For twenty years, I had imagined this moment.
Not this exact moment.
Not standing inside an abandoned medical center with broken windows, old files scattered across the floor, and a man who claimed my father had been murdered.
But somewhere deep inside me, I had always wondered what I would do if my mother suddenly appeared.
Would I run to her?
Would I cry?
Would I ask why she left me?
Would I forgive her?
I had imagined every possibility.
Except this one.
Because the woman standing in front of me didn’t look like someone who had returned home.
She looked like someone who had come back to finish a war.
Elena Vance stood beside Victoria.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My mother.
The woman I buried in my mind a thousand times.
The woman I had mourned every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every moment when I needed her.
And now she was standing ten feet away from me.
The first words out of her mouth were not an apology.
Not a greeting.
Not even my name.
They were:
“Your father was murdered because of me.””
My heart broke all over again.
I stared at her.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to say that.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I didn’t care.
“You don’t get to disappear for twenty years and walk back into my life with one sentence.””
Elena lowered her eyes.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Shame.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t know what it was like.””
She looked at me.
And I hated that she looked like my mother.
Because it made everything harder.
“You don’t know what it felt like to lose you.””
Her lips trembled.
“I thought about you every day.””
“Thinking about me isn’t being there.””
The silence was painful.
Victoria looked away.
Even Samuel Reed said nothing.
Because this was not their moment.
This was mine.
And hers.
Elena took a small step forward.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because every time I tried, someone got closer to finding me.””
“Who?””
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
“The people who wanted me dead.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around.
“My whole life has been one giant secret.””
I pointed at Samuel.
“You knew.””
I pointed at Victoria.
“You knew.””
Then I looked at my mother.
“And you knew.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“Why?””
Elena swallowed.
“Because your father made me promise.””
My anger flared.
“Everyone blames my father.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I never blamed Richard.””
She looked down.
“I blamed myself.””
The room became quiet.
Finally, Samuel spoke.
“Ethan, you need to hear the full story.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because right now you believe your father abandoned you.””
I didn’t answer.
Because part of me did.
Samuel continued.
“He didn’t.””
He looked at Elena.
“And neither did she.””
I looked at my mother.
“Then explain.””
Elena nodded.
“I will.””
She walked toward an old chair near the wall and sat down.
For the first time, she looked fragile.
Not like the woman from the photograph.
Not like a mystery.
Just a mother.
A mother who had lost twenty years.
“Your father and I discovered something about Vance International.””
“The theft?””
“Yes.””
“But Marcus wasn’t alone.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“He was only the person we could see.””
I thought about the ledger.
“The first door.””
She nodded.
“Richard wrote that?””
“Yes.””
Her face changed.
“He knew.””
“What?””
“He knew you would find the ledger.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“Because he planned everything.””
I looked at Victoria.
She nodded.
“Richard knew his time was running out.””
My chest tightened.
“He knew he was poisoned.””
“Yes.””
“Who poisoned him?””
Elena looked down.
“That is the question we spent years trying to answer.””
I stared.
“Spent years?””
She nodded.
“After the accident, I survived.””
I waited.
“Someone found me before the authorities did.””
“Who?””
“A man working for your father.””
Samuel.
I looked at him.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I helped her disappear.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You helped hide my mother.””
“Yes.””
“From me.””
His expression broke.
“From the people who would use you to find her.””
Elena continued.
“The night of the accident, I discovered someone had accessed confidential company files.””
“Marcus?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Her eyes moved to me.
“Someone closer.””
The same answer.
Again.
I was tired of mysteries.
“TELL ME.””
My voice echoed.
Elena looked at Victoria.
Then at Samuel.
Finally, she said:
“Your father’s biggest mistake was believing betrayal came from greed.””
I waited.
“It didn’t.””
“Then what was it?””
“Fear.””
I frowned.
“Fear?””
“Yes.””
She looked at the floor.
“Someone was afraid Richard would expose the truth.””
“Who?””
Elena’s eyes met mine.
“Someone who believed your father would destroy their life.””
A terrible feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the building lights flickered.
Everyone froze.
Samuel immediately stood.
“We need to move.””
Victoria looked toward the entrance.
“He followed us.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A voice I recognized.
“Ethan.””
My blood went cold.
Not because I knew the voice.
Because I knew the person.
Jonathan Pierce stepped out of the darkness.
But he wasn’t alone.
Two men stood behind him.
My mind raced.
“Jonathan?””
His expression was unreadable.
“Ethan.””
I looked at Victoria.
She looked shocked.
At Samuel.
He looked angry.
At my mother.
She looked terrified.
That was the first time I understood.
Whatever was happening…
Jonathan was not on our side.
“You lied to me,” I said.
Jonathan’s face tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The words almost made me laugh.
“Everyone says that.””
He looked at Elena.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
My mother stepped forward.
“And you should have told him the truth.””
Jonathan’s jaw clenched.
“I gave Richard my word.””
“No,” Elena replied.
“You gave Richard your fear.””
The silence was immediate.
Because that hit something.
Something real.
Jonathan looked at me.
“Ethan, you don’t understand what your father discovered.””
“Then explain.””
He shook his head.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
His eyes moved toward the men behind him.
Then back to me.
“Because if I say it out loud, they’ll know I betrayed them.””
My heart pounded.
“They?””
Jonathan looked toward the hallway.
Then whispered:
“They’re closer than you think.””
Suddenly, one of the men behind him raised a weapon.
Everything happened at once.
Samuel pushed me down.
Victoria grabbed Elena’s arm.
The lights went out.
A shot echoed through the building.
Glass shattered.
People shouted.
I hit the floor.
For several seconds, all I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Then the emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Faint.
Terrifying.
I looked around.
Samuel was bleeding from his shoulder.
Victoria was holding Elena.
Jonathan was gone.
But on the floor beside me was a piece of paper.
A note.
I picked it up.
Three words.
Written in my father’s handwriting.
My hands shook.
Because I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it all my life.
The note said:
*TRUST YOUR MOTHER.*
I looked at Elena.
And for the first time in twenty years…
I wanted to believe her.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Ethan.””
I froze.
Because I recognized it.
My father.
Impossible.
But unmistakable.
A recording.
A message left before he died.
May you like
And his first words were:
“If you are hearing this, then Jonathan failed me.””
