Chapter 7: The Name My Father Was Afraid To Say
The name at the bottom of the letter seemed to burn through the paper.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
*Daniel Carter.*
My hand went cold.
The room became silent.
Not normal silence.
The kind of silence that happens when everyone knows something terrible has just been revealed.
I looked at Robert.
My father.
The man who had spent seven years as a ghost.
His face had lost all color.
“Who is Daniel Carter?””
Nobody answered.
That was the first sign.
Not a scream.
Not a denial.
Silence.
I looked at Claire.
“You know him.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Robert.
“Tell him.””
Robert stared at the letter.
His jaw tightened.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
My voice cut through the room.
“I’m done waiting.””
I stood up.
“I spent seven years waiting for answers while everyone around me decided what I could handle.””
I held up the letter.
“My mother wrote this for me.””
My eyes locked onto his.
“So I’m handling it.””
Robert looked down.
For a moment, he wasn’t the man who disappeared.
He was just a father who looked exhausted.
“Daniel Carter was my older brother.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Your brother?””
Robert nodded.
“Your uncle.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because somehow my family kept getting bigger every time another secret appeared.
“My uncle?””
Claire stepped closer.
“Daniel was the person who helped build the Carter family business.””
I looked at her.
“Then why have I never heard of him?””
Robert answered.
“Because after what happened, we erased his name.””
“Erased?””
He nodded.
“From documents. From family records. From everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“You erased a person?””
Robert looked away.
“We tried to erase what he did.””
The words hung in the air.
“What did he do?””
Nobody answered immediately.
I looked at Claire.
She took a deep breath.
“Daniel believed your grandfather made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“Creating the trust.””
I frowned.
“The college money?””
Claire shook her head.
“The protection.””
I stared at her.
She continued.
“Your grandfather knew Daniel wanted control of everything. The company. The family assets. The influence.””
Robert nodded.
“When your grandfather created the trust for you, Daniel saw it as a betrayal.””
“Why?””
“Because it meant you were protected from him.””
I looked at the letter.
My mother’s handwriting suddenly felt heavier.
“So Daniel killed my mother?””
Robert’s face changed.
“Ethan…”
“Did he?””
Nobody spoke.
And that silence gave me my answer.
My chest tightened.
I turned away.
I wanted to feel angry.
I wanted to feel something simple.
But nothing about my family was simple anymore.
My father walked closer.
“Your mother discovered Daniel was trying to take control of the trust.””
“And she stopped him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Robert hesitated.
“She found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
He looked at Claire.
Claire reached into her bag again.
She pulled out a small folder.
Inside were copies of documents.
Bank records.
Legal papers.
Emails.
I stared at them.
“What is this?””
“Proof,” Claire said.
“Proof of what?””
“That Daniel had been moving money from accounts connected to the family for years.””
I looked through the papers.
The names.
The numbers.
The dates.
Everything was confusing.
But one thing was clear.
Someone had been stealing.
And my family had been fighting about it in secret.
“Why didn’t you tell the police?””
Robert’s expression changed.
“We tried.””
“And?””
He looked at the floor.
“And someone inside the system helped him.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“How many people knew?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He swallowed.
“Enough.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the black SUV was still parked.
Waiting.
Watching.
“How did Daniel know I was here?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire quietly said:
“Because someone told him.””
My head turned.
“What?””
She looked at Vanessa’s name flashing on my phone.
I hadn’t noticed it before.
She had called three times.
I stared at the screen.
Robert noticed.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she might be with him.””
The words hurt.
Because despite everything, some part of me still wanted Vanessa to be innocent.
She raised me.
She taught me how to drive.
She stayed up when I was sick.
She was the person who showed up when my father didn’t.
But she also lied.
She hid my father.
She hid my mother’s letter.
She emptied my tuition account.
I answered the call.
Everyone looked at me.
“Ethan?””
Her voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not controlling.
Scared.
“Where are you?””
I didn’t answer.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“You knew about Daniel.””
Silence.
That was enough.
My grip tightened.
“You knew.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Yes.””
Robert closed his eyes.
Claire looked away.
I felt something break inside me.
“Why?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Because I was trying to stop him.””
“By lying to me?””
“By keeping you alive.””
I hated that phrase.
Because everyone used it.
Everyone believed they had a right to destroy my life if they called it protection.
“You took my college money.””
A pause.
Then:
“I moved it.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I didn’t steal it.””
“Then where is it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice cracked.
“It’s hidden.””
“Where?””
Another pause.
Then she whispered:
“Somewhere Daniel can’t find.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Where is she?””
I ignored him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Daniel was watching you.””
My breathing slowed.
“What?””
“He knew about the trust. He knew you were the key.””
“The key to what?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Your grandfather didn’t create that trust because he wanted to give you money.””
A chill moved through me.
“He created it because he wanted to give you evidence.””
The room went silent.
“What evidence?””
Vanessa answered:
“The evidence that could destroy Daniel.””
I looked at the papers.
The flash drive.
The letters.
Everything.
My entire family had been hiding a war.
And I was the battlefield.
“Where are you?”” Robert asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer him.
She was talking to me.
“Ethan, you need to leave that house.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knows where you are.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Claire moved toward the window.
Her face changed.
“He’s here.””
I looked outside.
The black SUV door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Well-dressed.
Calm.
He didn’t look like someone who had spent years hiding.
He looked like someone who believed he owned every room he entered.
Robert whispered:
“Daniel.””
The man walked toward the house.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he had been invited.
My phone remained pressed against my ear.
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Ethan.””
I watched the man approach the front door.
“Do not let him convince you he came here to help.””
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then Daniel Carter’s voice came from the other side.
“Ethan.””
Everyone froze.
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“I know your father told you his version of the story.””
The door opened slightly.
Daniel looked inside.
And smiled.
“But before you decide who the villain is…”
His eyes landed on Robert.
“…you should ask your father what happened the night your mother died.””
Robert’s face went pale.
Daniel stepped inside.
Then he said the words that made my entire body freeze.
“Because I wasn’t the one who killed Elena Carter.””
A pause.
May you like
His eyes moved to my father.
“Robert was.””
