Chapter 4: The Father Nobody Mentioned
For sixteen years, I had been told my father was dead.
Not missing.
Not absent.
Dead.
My grandfather had explained it when I was little. He said my father had died before I was born, in a workplace accident overseas. There had been no photographs, no funeral, and no relatives who came to visit.
Eventually, I stopped asking.
Now Mr. Bennett was telling me that my father had witnessed my mother's final conversation.
And judging by Daniel's expression, that fact was more dangerous than anything in the notebook.
"That's impossible," Daniel said.
Mr. Bennett carefully folded the handwritten note.
"Why?""
"Because her husband died.""
"Which husband?""
Daniel's mouth opened, then closed.
I looked between them.
"What do you mean, which husband?""
Claire lowered herself into the chair.
"Maya, there's something your grandfather never told you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Apparently, there's a lot Grandpa never told me.""
She wiped her cheeks with a tissue.
"Your mother was married twice.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Her first husband was your biological father. His name was Thomas Reed. They married when they were very young. The marriage ended before your mother met the man you were told was your father.""
I shook my head.
"No. Grandpa said—"
"Your grandfather told you what he thought would keep you safe.""
"Where is my father?""
Nobody answered.
Daniel walked toward the window and pulled the curtain aside.
"He's irrelevant.""
I turned toward him.
"You don't get to decide that.""
He faced me.
"Your father was a coward. He abandoned your mother when she needed him most. He disappeared, and your grandfather spent years trying to locate him.""
"Then why did Grandpa say he was dead?""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Because it was easier than explaining what happened.""
Mr. Bennett placed the handwritten note on the desk.
"Mr. Hayes, your father specifically instructed me to locate Thomas Reed if the original will became relevant.""
Daniel spun around.
"You knew about him?""
"I knew he was a potential witness. I did not know he was alive.""
Claire looked at the lawyer.
"Edward contacted him three months ago.""
My heart began pounding.
"You knew my father was alive?""
She nodded.
"He came to the house.""
"When?""
"Last summer.""
I gripped the desk.
"Where was I?""
"At school.""
"Did he ask about me?""
Claire's eyes filled again.
"Yes.""
"Did he want to see me?""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, "He cried when he saw your photograph.""
I felt something inside me crack.
For years, I had imagined what it would be like to have a father. At school, when other girls complained about their dads embarrassing them at parent evenings, I used to wonder what it would feel like to have someone waiting outside the classroom.
I had convinced myself he simply hadn't wanted me.
Now I was being told he had stood in my grandfather's house, looked at my photograph, and left without seeing me.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Claire looked at Daniel.
He answered for her.
"Because your father wanted money.""
"That's not true," Claire whispered.
Daniel glared at her.
"Don't.""
She stood.
"Stop telling her lies!""
The room fell silent.
Claire approached me, holding the blue folder against her chest.
"Thomas came because Edward had contacted him about the will. He brought documents. He said Evelyn had given him something before she died.""
"What?""
"A recording. A signed statement. I don't know exactly.""
Mr. Bennett stepped forward.
"Did he say where those documents were?""
Claire shook her head.
"He said he would only hand them over if Maya was present.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Then why didn't you let him see me?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Because I knew what he would do.""
"What?""
"He would tell you things that would destroy this family.""
I stared at him.
"Maybe this family deserves to be destroyed.""
He took a step toward me.
"You ungrateful little—"
"Enough!""
Mr. Bennett's voice thundered through the study.
He positioned himself between us.
"Mr. Hayes, I will not allow you to intimidate a minor. I have already contacted the estate's independent trustees. If you attempt to interfere with the evidence again, I will report it.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"You think a few pieces of paper will bring my father back? You think a teenager can take over a business worth millions?""
I looked down at the old photograph.
"No. But I think the truth can.""
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man's voice spoke.
"Maya?""
I couldn't move.
"Who's this?""
"My name is Thomas.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Thomas Reed?""
A long pause.
Then he said something that made the room disappear around me.
"Your mother asked me to find you. I've been trying for sixteen years.""
I looked at Claire.
She was crying.
Daniel had gone completely pale.
Thomas continued.
"Listen carefully. Your uncle knows I've called. He'll try to stop me from reaching you.""
I swallowed.
"Where are you?""
"Outside your grandfather's house.""
A loud knock sounded at the front door.
May you like
Then the man's voice came through the phone again.
"Please, sweetheart. Don't let him send me away this time.""
