Chapter 10: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Alicia didn't move.

The phone screen went dark in her hand.

Vanessa was crying silently.

Marcus stood near the sofa, staring at the floor as though twenty years of secrets had finally become too heavy to carry.

Then the phone rang again.

Alicia answered.

“Who are you?””

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

“You know exactly who I am.””

Alicia's breath caught.

“Grandma?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus whispered, “Don't.””

The voice answered.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find the truth.””

Alicia closed her eyes.

Her grandmother had been dead for years.

She had attended the funeral.

She had watched the coffin disappear beneath the earth.

Yet the voice was unmistakable.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Look behind the bookshelf.””

Alicia turned.

The bookshelf stood exactly where it had always been.

Family photographs.

Old books.

The wooden Bible.

The hidden compartments.

She walked toward it.

Vanessa followed.

Marcus stayed where he was.

Alicia moved the wedding photograph aside.

Nothing.

She pushed the family Bible.

Nothing.

Then Vanessa whispered, “The bottom shelf.””

Alicia crouched.

There was a thin line in the wood.

A door.

She pressed it.

It opened.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside sat an old portable recorder.

Alicia stared at it.

The voice came through the phone again.

“Press play.””

Alicia picked up the recorder.

Her hands were shaking.

She pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then her grandmother's voice.

Twenty years younger.

“If you're hearing this, Alicia, then Vanessa has returned.””

Vanessa began crying harder.

Alicia listened.

“I know you will hate me for what I did.””

Alicia's eyes filled with tears.

“But I had no choice.””

Marcus looked up.

The recording continued.

“Your mother and Vanessa's mother were sisters. Both were my daughters. Both were supposed to inherit equally.””

Alicia looked at Vanessa.

“But your mother discovered that someone inside our family was stealing from the inheritance.””

Marcus lowered his head.

The recording continued.

“She believed it was Jonathan.””

Vanessa whispered, “My father.””

“Yes,” her grandmother's recorded voice said.

“But Jonathan wasn't working alone.””

Alicia's stomach tightened.

The voice paused.

“I discovered the truth too late.””

Alicia looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

The recording continued.

“The person controlling everything was someone I trusted.””

Alicia held her breath.

“Someone who knew every account, every document, every family secret.””

A pause.

“Someone who had access to my home.””

Marcus suddenly looked sick.

Alicia whispered, “Who?””

The recording answered.

“Your grandfather.””

Vanessa stared.

“My grandfather?””

Alicia shook her head.

“He died before I was born.””

“He didn't,” Marcus said quietly.

Alicia turned.

Marcus looked directly at her.

“Your grandfather disappeared.””

Alicia stared.

“What?””

“Your grandmother told everyone he died.””

“Why?””

“Because he was running.””

The recording continued.

“He took money from the family trust. He forged documents. He manipulated Jonathan. When my older daughter discovered what he was doing, he tried to silence her.””

Vanessa sank onto the sofa.

“My mother.””

“Yes.””

“He didn't kill her,” Alicia's grandmother said on the recording.

“But he made everyone believe she was dead.””

Alicia covered her mouth.

Vanessa whispered, “Where is she?””

The recording clicked.

Then her grandmother answered.

“She survived.””

Vanessa broke down.

Marcus looked away.

Alicia stared at him.

“You knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“I found out when I was fourteen.””

“That's why you promised her.””

“Yes.””

“What promise?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She made me promise to protect the second heir.””

Alicia looked at Vanessa.

“You.””

Marcus nodded.

“But you were supposed to protect her from my grandfather.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought keeping you close was the safest way to protect both of you.””

Alicia stared at him.

“You destroyed our marriage.””

“I know.””

“You brought her into our home.””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather came back.””

Silence.

Alicia's heart stopped.

“When?””

“Three days ago.””

The phone crackled.

Her grandmother's voice returned.

“Marcus was instructed to bring Vanessa here because the original emerald is the only thing your grandfather cannot fake.””

Alicia looked at the emerald.

“The ring.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“The copy.””

Alicia nodded.

“The real one is with your mother.””

Vanessa stared.

The recording continued.

“She has been watching this house for years.””

Alicia's eyes widened.

“Watching?””

“She never came inside because she was afraid the wrong person would find her.””

Vanessa whispered, “My mother…”

“She wanted to return when she knew the inheritance was safe.””

Alicia looked around the room.

“So why now?””

The recorder clicked.

“Because he found her.””

Marcus suddenly stepped toward the door.

Alicia grabbed his arm.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at the front door.

“I think he's here.””

Three knocks sounded.

Everyone froze.

Three slow knocks.

The same rhythm as before.

Alicia looked at Vanessa.

“Don't move.””

Marcus whispered, “It's him.””

Another knock.

Harder.

Alicia picked up the original emerald.

The front door handle turned.

Vanessa stood.

“No.””

Alicia grabbed her hand.

The door opened.

An elderly Black woman stepped into the living room.

Her silver hair was pulled neatly back.

Her face was older than the woman in the photograph.

But Vanessa knew her instantly.

“Mom?””

The woman stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa ran to her.

They collided in the middle of the living room.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Alicia watched them embrace.

Then the woman looked at her.

“Alicia.””

Alicia nodded slowly.

“You're my grandmother's daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And you're alive.””

“Yes.””

“Why did everyone say you were dead?””

The woman looked toward the door.

“Because your grandfather wanted me dead.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Is he here?””

The woman's face changed.

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That the original emerald is here.””

Alicia held it up.

“Why does it matter?””

The woman looked at the stone.

“Because it contains the proof.””

“What proof?””

“That Jonathan wasn't the thief.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Then who was?””

Her mother looked at Alicia.

“Your grandfather.””

Alicia's eyes filled.

“Where is he?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she pointed toward the bookshelf.

“Closer than you think.””

Alicia turned.

One of the family photographs was slightly crooked.

She walked toward it.

The photograph showed her grandmother, her mother, Vanessa's mother, and a young man standing behind them.

Alicia stared.

She recognized him.

She had seen that face before.

In another photograph.

At her own wedding.

Standing in the far background.

Watching.

Alicia's blood went cold.

“That man…”

Marcus whispered, “He's been here.””

The older woman nodded.

“He never left.””

Alicia turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were four words:

*HE MARRIED INTO THE FAMILY.*

Alicia looked at Marcus.

Marcus's face went white.

Then Vanessa's mother said quietly,

“Your grandfather isn't Marcus's father.””

Alicia froze.

Marcus stared at her.

The woman continued.

“He is Marcus's uncle.””

Alicia's eyes widened.

The entire room went silent.

Marcus looked toward the door.

A shadow passed across the glass.

Then the doorknob slowly turned.

Alicia tightened her grip around the emerald.

This time, she didn't step backward.

She stepped forward.

And when the door opened, the man standing there smiled at her.

He was old.

But Alicia knew that smile.

She had seen it in every family photograph her grandmother had tried to hide.

Her grandfather looked at the emerald in Alicia's hand.

Then he said,

“Your grandmother always did underestimate you.””

Alicia raised the will.

“No.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

Then at the woman who had survived twenty years of lies.

“She underestimated all of us.””

Her grandfather's smile disappeared.

Alicia placed the original emerald on top of the two wills.

“Now tell me the truth.””

He stared at the evidence.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

And in the silence that followed, Alicia finally understood the real reason her grandmother had written that warning twenty years ago.

It had never been about Vanessa.

It had never been about Marcus.

It had been about the man standing in her doorway.

The man who had spent twenty years believing the family would never discover what he had done.

And now every secret was sitting on the same table.

The emerald.

The wills.

The forged signature.

The missing heir.

May you like

The dead woman who wasn't dead.

And the family that had finally found its way back to the truth.
