Chapter 11: The Recording That Changed Everything

I called my father from the hotel elevator.

He answered immediately.

“Eleanor?””

“Victoria has a recording.””

Silence.

“Dad?””

“Where did you meet her?””

“The Carlyle.””

“What did she tell you?””

“She said it's from the night Mom disappeared.””

My father exhaled sharply.

“Do not let her play it for you.””

“Why?””

“Because it was recorded during a terrible night. People said things they didn't mean.””

“What things?””

“Eleanor, please.””

I closed my eyes.

“You've asked me to trust you for thirty-two years. I can't keep doing that without answers.””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“Come to the house. I'll tell you everything.””

At 10:30 p.m., I entered my father's study.

He was standing beside the fireplace.

On the desk sat an old cassette recorder.

A small plastic case lay beside it.

I stopped.

“What's that?””

“The original recording.””

I stared at him.

“You have it?””

“Peter gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted me to destroy it.””

I looked at the recorder.

“Did you?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I knew one day you might need it.””

He sat down.

“Eleanor, that night was complicated. Your mother and I were trying to protect you. Peter was angry.

Catherine was frightened. Charles was a child who had been dragged into something he didn't understand.””

“And you?””

“I was trying to stop my brother.””

I sat opposite him.

“Tell me what happened.””

My father pressed his fingers together.

“Peter discovered that Margaret had arranged to move you and Catherine out of New York. He believed she was stealing his children.””

“He had already taken Elizabeth.””

“Yes.””

“Where was Elizabeth?””

“With a woman Peter trusted. He had arranged for her to be raised under another identity.””

My stomach tightened.

“And you knew?””

“I discovered it that night.””

I looked at the recorder.

“Play it.””

My father hesitated.

Then he pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

A door slammed.

A woman's voice spoke.

Margaret.

“Peter, you cannot keep doing this. They're children.””

A man's voice answered.

Peter.

“They're my children.””

“Catherine is their mother!””

“And I'm their father.””

Another voice interrupted.

Richard.

“Peter, this has gone far enough.””

I gripped the armrest.

The recording continued.

Peter laughed bitterly.

“You always thought you were better than me. Father gave you the company, Margaret gave you the family, and now you're taking my children.””

My father's voice became louder.

“I'm trying to protect them.””

“From what?””

“From you.””

A crash followed.

Then Margaret shouted.

“Stop!””

The sound of footsteps echoed.

A door opened.

Then a small voice.

Charles.

“Dad?””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

Peter's voice softened.

“Go upstairs, son.””

“I don't want to.””

“Charles. Upstairs.””

Then another sound.

A thud.

My father suddenly stopped the recording.

I stared at him.

“What happened?””

He looked away.

“Margaret fell.””

“Catherine said she was struck.””

“She tried to stop Peter from taking you. He pushed past her. She fell down the staircase.””

I swallowed.

“Was she unconscious?””

“Yes.””

“And Peter?””

“He took Elizabeth and left.””

I looked at him.

“What happened to Catherine?””

My father stared at the floor.

“She went after him.””

“And you?””

“I stayed with Margaret and called for help.””

I felt tears slipping down my cheeks.

“Why did you tell me Mom died peacefully?””

“Because the truth was too painful.””

“No. You told me she died eight years ago. You let me believe she had a peaceful final decade.””

He closed his eyes.

“She did have a peaceful final decade.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Margaret survived the fall. She recovered physically, but she never fully recovered her memory. She lived in a care facility for several years.””

My throat tightened.

“Where?””

“Outside Boston.””

“Did I visit her?””

He nodded.

“Many times.””

I stared at him.

“I don't remember.””

“Because she didn't always recognize you. Some days she thought you were a little girl. Other days she believed you were Catherine.””

My hands began trembling.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you were already grieving. I thought I was protecting you.””

I stood.

“You took my memories and decided what I was allowed to know.””

He looked devastated.

“I thought I was doing what Margaret wanted.””

I turned toward the door.

“Play the rest.””

He didn't move.

“Dad.””

He pressed the button.

The recording resumed.

A woman's voice appeared.

Catherine.

“Richard, where is Eleanor?””

“She's safe.””

“Where is my daughter?””

“Peter took Elizabeth.””

A pause.

Then Catherine began crying.

“You promised me.””

“I know.””

“You promised me both girls would be safe.””

My father sounded exhausted.

“I couldn't stop him.””

Catherine's voice grew cold.

“Then I will.””

The recording continued for another minute.

Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.

Catherine said:

“Margaret, if you can hear me, remember this. The person who helped Peter wasn't Charles.””

My father went completely still.

Catherine continued.

“It was someone inside your office.””

Then static.

The recording ended.

I stared at the recorder.

“Who?””

My father didn't answer.

I turned toward him.

“Who helped Peter?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I never found out.””

“Did you investigate?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“Every lead disappeared.””

I looked at the old recorder.

“Victoria says she has the original recording.””

My father nodded.

“She may have another copy.””

“Why would she keep it?””

“Because she believes it proves I helped Peter.””

I felt a cold shiver.

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then let me hear the whole thing.””

My father stared at me.

“There is something else on that tape.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“Margaret said a name.””

I leaned forward.

“Whose?””

He looked at me.

“Grant's.””

My blood turned cold.

“Grant wasn't even in our family thirty-two years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how could she have said his name?””

My father reached into the desk drawer and removed a folded piece of paper.

It was a transcript of the recording.

Near the bottom was a handwritten note.

The boy who brought Peter the documents was identified as William Grant.

I stared at the words.

“William Grant?””

My father nodded.

“Peter had an assistant named William Grant. His son was named Robert.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Grant Williams?””

My father nodded slowly.

“His father changed the family name years later.””

I sank into the chair.

Grant's family had been connected to Peter.

For how long?

And why had he married me?

My father continued.

“Eleanor, I don't think Grant discovered your inheritance after marrying you.””

I looked up.

“What are you saying?””

“I think he knew about the trust before he ever met you.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

Emergency board meeting moved to 8:00 a.m. Victoria has submitted the recording as evidence.

A second message followed.

Grant is attending.

Then a third.

He's bringing someone with him.

I typed:

Who?

Daniel replied immediately.

The person who claims to be the original trustee of Elizabeth's estate.

I looked at my father.

“Who could that be?””

He stared at the message.

Then he whispered:

“Peter.””

I shook my head.

“Peter is dead.””

My father looked at the cassette recorder.

“I know.””

Then the front doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

My father stood.

A moment later, his assistant called from the hallway.

“Mr. Bennett, there's someone here asking for Eleanor.””

“Who?””

The assistant hesitated.

Then she said:

“Mr. William Grant.””

My heart stopped.

I walked toward the entrance.

An elderly man stood outside.

He had a walking cane, silver hair, and the same sharp eyes as Grant.

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he smiled.

“Hello, Eleanor.””

I couldn't speak.

He extended his hand.

“My name is William Grant.””

May you like

He glanced past me toward my father.

“And I believe it's time we discussed what your husband was really hired to do.””
