Chapter 12: The Bloodline That Changed Everything

I stared at the birth certificate.

My mother's name was not listed.

Instead, the document identified Margaret Vale as my biological mother.

I looked at Margaret.

She was crying silently.

Then I looked at Thomas.

"Explain.""

Thomas folded his hands.

"Your mother adopted you.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"She raised you. She loved you. But she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.""

Margaret reached for my hand.

"Sweetheart, I wanted to tell you.""

I pulled away.

"Then why didn't you?""

Her face crumpled.

"Because Eleanor asked me to wait until you were old enough to understand what happened.""

"Understand what?""

Thomas answered before she could.

"Your mother was involved in a private agreement with Edward. She agreed to raise you in exchange for keeping the original ownership dispute quiet.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's a serious allegation. Do you have evidence?""

Thomas smiled.

"I have the original adoption agreement.""

He placed another document on the table.

I read the first paragraph.

The language was formal and precise.

It stated that Margaret Vale had voluntarily surrendered custody of her daughter to Eleanor Hartwell.

But the date was wrong.

It was dated six months after my birth.

I looked at Margaret.

"Is this real?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Thomas sighed.

"Margaret, don't make this harder than it needs to be.""

She suddenly stood.

"You stole my son. You helped Edward declare me dead. You watched me lose my daughter. Don't you dare tell me what's difficult.""

Thomas's smile disappeared.

Daniel moved closer to the table.

"Mr. Hartwell, I'm advising you not to touch any of these documents. They may be evidence in an ongoing investigation.""

Thomas looked at him.

"You're working for the wrong woman.""

Daniel didn't move.

"I'm working for the beneficiary of the Hartwell Trust.""

Thomas turned back to me.

"Then perhaps you should know what your mother did with the money.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What money?""

"The money she received from Edward in exchange for giving up her claim to the company.""

I shook my head.

"She never received anything.""

Thomas laughed.

"Forty million dollars.""

Daniel looked sharply at him.

"That's impossible.""

Thomas reached into his jacket and produced a bank statement.

"Not impossible. Just hidden.""

He placed it beside the birth certificate.

The account was registered to a company called Hartwell Legacy Services.

The balance shown was $40,000,000.

The final transaction was dated three days before my mother's death.

I stared at the statement.

"Where did this money go?""

Thomas smiled.

"Into a private trust.""

"Whose trust?""

He leaned closer.

"Yours.""

I felt the room spin.

"You're lying.""

"Ask Daniel.""

I turned.

Daniel examined the account number.

His expression changed.

"This is not part of the trust we currently administer.""

"Then what is it?""

He looked at me.

"A separate legacy account. It was established under your mother's instructions.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I have never seen these records.""

Thomas laughed.

"Your mother was very good at hiding things.""

I turned toward Margaret.

"Did you know about this?""

She nodded slowly.

"Eleanor told me she had secured enough money to make sure you would never need the company.""

"Then why did she leave me the other trust?""

"Because the money wasn't the only thing she wanted you to inherit.""

Margaret picked up the original ownership agreement.

"She wanted you to have the truth.""

I looked at the document.

For years, I had believed my mother's greatest gift was financial security.

But she had apparently been protecting a secret much larger than money.

Thomas moved toward the table.

"Give me the agreement.""

Daniel stepped in front of him.

"No.""

Thomas's expression hardened.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

"I understand that this document may establish the true ownership of a major corporation.""

Thomas laughed.

"Ownership isn't determined by a piece of paper.""

"Then why are you so desperate to take it?""

For the first time, Thomas said nothing.

The officer returned to the doorway.

"Sir, I'm going to need you to step outside.""

Thomas straightened his jacket.

"This isn't over.""

He looked at me.

"Ask your mother why she really chose Eleanor.""

Then he walked out.

I turned toward Margaret.

"What did he mean?""

She sat down slowly.

"Your mother and I were close friends before either of us met Edward.""

"How close?""

Margaret looked at me.

"We loved each other.""

I felt my breath catch.

She continued.

"Edward discovered our relationship. He used it to control us both. When I became pregnant, he took advantage of the situation. He threatened to destroy Eleanor's reputation and have me declared mentally unfit.""

I sat down.

"Why didn't you leave?""

"I tried. But Edward had connections everywhere. He told me he would make sure I never saw my child again.""

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

"Eleanor offered to help. She promised that if I surrendered custody temporarily, she would protect you until we could expose Edward.""

I looked at her.

"Temporarily?""

Margaret nodded.

"That was the agreement.""

"Then why did she raise me?""

"Because Edward made sure I could never return.""

I stared at the floor.

My entire childhood had suddenly become unfamiliar.

My mother was still my mother.

The woman who had held me when I was sick.

Who had taught me to drive.

Who had stayed awake beside my hospital bed when I had my appendix removed.

But there was another woman sitting in front of me who had given birth to me and spent decades believing she had lost me.

I reached for Margaret's hand.

"Did she love me?""

Margaret squeezed my fingers.

"More than anything.""

"Then why did she never tell me?""

"Because she was afraid Edward would use the truth against you.""

I closed my eyes.

Daniel interrupted gently.

"Nia, there's another issue we need to address.""

I looked at him.

He held the bank statement.

"This legacy account contains a clause that may change the ownership structure of Whitmore Holdings.""

"What clause?""

"Your mother transferred the forty million dollars into an irrevocable investment vehicle. The funds were intended to purchase controlling shares if the original ownership agreement was challenged.""

I frowned.

"Who controls it?""

Daniel examined the final page.

"According to the document, the account can only be activated by two people.""

"Who?""

He looked at Margaret.

"Margaret Vale.""

Then he looked at me.

"And Nia Whitmore.""

I stared at the page.

"Together?""

"Yes.""

Margaret nodded.

"Your mother wanted us to reclaim what Edward stole.""

I felt something shift inside me.

For years, Grant had treated me like an obstacle.

He had believed that marrying me would give him access to everything.

But he had overlooked one important detail.

My mother had never intended for me to fight this battle alone.

I looked at Margaret.

"Will you help me?""

She squeezed my hand.

"Of course, sweetheart.""

Daniel gathered the documents.

"Then we should move quickly. If Thomas knows we have the original agreement, he'll likely try to destroy the remaining evidence.""

My phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

"Nia, it's Peter Shaw.""

I immediately put the call on speaker.

"What do you want?""

"I think you deserve to know what your husband is planning.""

"Go on.""

"Grant has arranged an emergency board meeting tomorrow morning. He's going to claim that the Hartwell Trust has been illegally interfering with company operations.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"On what grounds?""

Peter continued.

"He's presenting documents proving that Nia has been mentally incompetent for years.""

I closed my eyes.

"Those documents are fraudulent.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you calling me?""

Peter hesitated.

"Because Grant has something else.""

"What?""

"He's going to introduce a witness who will testify that Nia's mother was never legally Eleanor Hartwell.""

I looked at Margaret.

Her face had gone pale.

Peter lowered his voice.

"He's bringing someone who claims to be Eleanor's biological daughter.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"Someone who says she has the right to inherit the entire Hartwell estate.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"Who is she?""

Peter answered.

"Her name is Sophia.""

I looked at Margaret.

She slowly shook her head.

Then she whispered:

"That's impossible.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why?""

Margaret looked directly at me.

"Because Sophia is the name of the daughter Edward told me he had killed twenty-five years ago.""

The call disconnected.

May you like

And somewhere in Manhattan, Grant was preparing to introduce another woman who claimed to be part of my family.

This time, I wasn't going to let him control the story.
