Chapter 13 - THE HOME WE BUILT

Two years passed.
My daughter never left without someone with her.

I hated living that way.

But I refused to be afraid.

Then one afternoon, my father received a call.

A security officer had spotted someone near the old property.

A man.

Gray coat.

Dark hat.

He had been watching the house.

My father went after him.

The man escaped.

But he dropped a wallet.

Inside was an identification card.

The name was fake.

But the photograph wasn't.

My father recognized him.

“Victor's brother.”

I stared.

“Another one?”

He nodded.

The family network had spread farther than anyone knew.

But the man made one mistake.

He left fingerprints.

The police tracked him.

He was arrested that night.

During interrogation, he finally confessed.

He had been monitoring the family for years.

He had been paid to watch me.

The person who hired him was not Damon.

Not my grandmother.

Not Victor.

Someone else.

“Who?”

He gave the police a name.

Mara Bennett.

My mother's sister.

The same woman from the old photograph.

The woman everyone believed had died.

I stared.

“She's alive?”

My mother looked horrified.

“Mara.”

My father immediately understood.

“She helped your grandmother.”

“But why?”

My mother whispered:

“She wanted the inheritance.”

Mara had been the original mastermind behind separating the twins.

She had convinced my grandmother that two heirs were dangerous.

She had helped hide Sarah.

She had manipulated Damon.

She had even forged documents after my grandmother died.

The network had continued because Mara had kept it alive.

My mother finally faced her sister.

They met in a courthouse.

Mara smiled.

“You always were sentimental.”

My mother looked at her.

“And you always chose money.”

Mara shrugged.

“Money is freedom.”

“No.”

My mother shook her head.

“Money without love is another prison.”

Mara looked at me.

“You think you won.”

I stepped forward.

“No.”

“I did.”

“You lost.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want what you wanted.”

She frowned.

“I don't want control.”

I looked at my daughter.

“I want her to have a choice.”

Mara's expression changed.

For the first time, she had nothing to say.

Mara was convicted.

The final assets were frozen.

The remaining victims were compensated.

The old network was dismantled.

And finally, after twenty-nine years, my family was free.
