Chapter 9: Two Sons, One Inheritance
The alarm continued to scream.
My mother gripped my hand.
Thomas moved toward the control panel.
Grant stood frozen beside the medical bed.
And Daniel reached inside his jacket.
"Nobody opens that door," he said.
Evelyn's voice came through the speaker again.
"Robert, I know you're listening.""
My mother looked toward the second bed.
A man was lying beneath a thin white blanket.
My father.
His eyes were open.
He looked at me.
"Claire.""
I ran to him.
"Father.""
He reached for my hand.
His fingers were cold.
"I'm sorry.""
I shook my head.
"Don't. Not now.""
He tried to sit up.
Thomas helped him.
For the first time in fifteen years, I was looking at both my parents.
And beside them stood two men who shared the same biological father.
My husband.
And the brother I had never known.
The family tree I had grown up believing in had been a lie.
The speaker crackled.
Evelyn's voice returned.
"Robert, you cannot keep hiding. The Whitmore estate belongs to my family.""
My father looked toward the speaker.
"Your family?""
He laughed weakly.
"You stole one son, tried to steal the other, and spent thirty years trying to take what wasn't yours.""
A loud metallic bang came from the corridor.
Thomas moved toward the door.
"They're trying to force the entrance.""
Daniel joined him.
"How many?""
"At least six.""
My mother looked at me.
"Claire, there's something you need to know before they get inside.""
I sat beside my father.
"What?""
She took a document from the cabinet.
It was a trust amendment.
The date was three days before my twenty-fifth birthday.
My father's signature appeared at the bottom.
"What is this?""
"The original Hayes inheritance agreement.""
I looked at the document.
My name was listed as the primary beneficiary.
But there were two additional names.
Thomas Robert Hayes.
And Grant Edward Whitmore.
I looked up.
"Why is Grant included?""
My father answered.
"Because he is my son.""
Grant lowered his head.
"Did you know?""
My father looked at him.
"I knew from the day you were born.""
Grant's voice broke.
"Then why did you let me believe Edward was my father?""
"Because Evelyn told me she would kill Thomas if I revealed the truth.""
Thomas looked away.
My father continued.
"She took one of my children and threatened to destroy the other. I made a terrible choice.""
Grant stepped forward.
"Was any of it real? Did you ever consider me your son?""
My father reached for him.
"Every day.""
Grant didn't take his hand.
I watched them.
For twelve years, I had thought Grant's family was simply wealthy and cruel.
Now I understood that he had grown up inside a lie, too.
But that didn't excuse what he had done to me.
My father turned back toward me.
"The trust was designed to protect all three of you. But Evelyn found a loophole.""
"What loophole?""
"The beneficiary could be forced to surrender control through a marital settlement if the agreement was witnessed by a recognized heir.""
I felt cold.
"Victor Hale.""
My father nodded.
"Exactly.""
"So the entire fifty-million-dollar payment was designed to transfer my inheritance?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Can we reverse it?""
He held up a document.
"We already filed the challenge. But we need proof that Evelyn knowingly concealed the true identity of the witnesses and used fraudulent medical records.""
Thomas stepped toward the table.
"I have that proof.""
He opened a metal case.
Inside were several hard drives and a collection of signed documents.
"Evelyn kept copies of everything," he said.
"She believed nobody would ever challenge her.""
He placed a folder in front of me.
The first document was a payment authorization.
The second was a laboratory report.
The third was a signed agreement between Evelyn and Victor Hale.
I read the final page.
It contained a sentence that made my stomach turn.
*The beneficiary shall be removed from the inheritance structure upon successful execution of the marital settlement. All related genetic material shall remain under Whitmore control.*
My name appeared underneath.
I looked at my mother.
"Did you know?""
She shook her head.
"I discovered the agreement after your father became ill. By then, Evelyn had already moved the embryos.""
I closed the folder.
"Where are the children?""
"Alexander is still at the mansion," Daniel said.
"Madison's twins are in the hospital.""
I thought of the three babies.
My son.
The two children carried by Madison.
None of them had chosen to become part of this nightmare.
"Can we get them?""
Daniel nodded.
"With the evidence we have, we can seek emergency protective custody and a review of the transfers.""
My father squeezed my hand.
"Claire, listen to me. Whatever happens, don't let the money become more important than the children.""
I looked at him.
"It won't.""
A violent crash echoed through the corridor.
Thomas rushed to the door.
"Someone's inside.""
Daniel raised his hand.
"Everyone back.""
The blue door shuddered.
Then it opened.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
She wore a black coat and leather gloves.
Two security officers stood behind her.
Her eyes moved from Robert to Elizabeth.
Then to Grant.
Finally, they settled on me.
"Claire.""
I stood.
"You've caused enough damage.""
She laughed.
"Damage? I gave you fifty million dollars. I gave you a way out.""
"You stole my embryos.""
"I protected the family.""
"You kidnapped children.""
Her expression hardened.
"Those children are Whitmore heirs.""
"They are human beings.""
Evelyn looked toward Grant.
"Tell her.""
Grant didn't move.
"Tell her what?""
"Tell her you authorized everything.""
He looked at me.
Then at Evelyn.
"I authorized the embryo transfers.""
My chest tightened.
"But I didn't know you were using them to steal the trust.""
Evelyn's mouth tightened.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
Grant stepped forward.
"You told me Claire's father had agreed to everything. You told me the embryos were legally ours.""
"Because they were.""
"No," he said.
"They weren't.""
Evelyn slapped him.
The sound echoed through the room.
"After everything I've done for you!""
Grant didn't raise his hand.
He simply looked at her.
"You lied to me about my father. You lied about my brother. You used my marriage to steal Claire's inheritance. And you made me believe my wife was broken because she couldn't give me children.""
Evelyn's face twisted.
"She was never going to give you children.""
I stepped forward.
"Because you were using my children elsewhere.""
Evelyn turned toward me.
"Your children were part of a larger plan.""
"Whose plan?""
"Your father's.""
My father slowly pushed himself upright.
"Don't you dare.""
Evelyn looked at him.
For the first time, her confidence faltered.
"Robert, you have no idea what you're talking about.""
"I know exactly what I signed.""
He reached toward the cabinet.
Thomas brought him a small black folder.
My father opened it.
Inside was a document with a large red stamp.
*REVOCATION OF ALL PRIOR GENETIC MATERIAL AUTHORIZATIONS.*
He held it up.
"Every embryo transfer, every donor agreement, every research authorization you obtained through deception is invalid.""
Evelyn stared at the paper.
Then she laughed.
"You can't revoke what has already happened.""
"No," my father replied.
"But I can prove what you did.""
He handed the document to Daniel.
Daniel read it quickly.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I believe you should speak to your attorney.""
Evelyn took a step backward.
"You have no authority here.""
A new voice came from the corridor.
"Actually, we do.""
Two federal investigators entered, followed by a woman carrying a badge.
One of them approached Evelyn.
"Mrs. Evelyn Whitmore, we have a warrant for your arrest on suspicion of financial fraud, unlawful medical record access, identity fraud, and conspiracy involving the unauthorized transfer of genetic material.""
Evelyn looked around.
Then her eyes landed on me.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
She leaned closer.
"Ask your father what happened to the first child born from the Hayes embryos.""
I looked at Robert.
His face had turned ashen.
"Father?""
He closed his eyes.
Evelyn smiled.
"Yes, Claire. There was another baby before Alexander. Before Madison's twins. Before all of them.""
She was led toward the door.
But before disappearing into the corridor, she turned one last time.
"Your father knows where that child is.""
I looked at Robert.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
"Father," I whispered.
"Who was the first child?""
He began to cry.
Then he reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a photograph.
It showed a little girl standing beside my mother.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A familiar birthmark beneath her left ear.
On the back, my father's handwriting read:
*Sophia Hayes. Born twelve years ago.*
I stared at the photograph.
Twelve years ago.
The same year I married Grant.
The same year my first fertility treatment failed.
I looked at my father.
"Who is she?""
His voice broke.
"Claire, she's your daughter.""
I couldn't breathe.
"That's impossible.""
He shook his head.
"She was the first embryo we created. Before your final IVF cycle. Evelyn transferred her to a surrogate and concealed the birth.""
My hands began trembling.
"Where is she now?""
My father looked toward the door through which Evelyn had disappeared.
Then he whispered:
"She's been living with Grant's sister for twelve years.""
May you like
And suddenly, I understood why Evelyn had been so desperate to keep me away.
*She hadn't just stolen my inheritance. She had stolen an entire childhood from me.*
