Chapter 12: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the photograph until the details blurred.

My father.

Alive.

Six months earlier.

The man who had taught me to ride a bicycle, walked me down the aisle, and left me a letter before he supposedly died was standing outside a hospital with the same doctor who had helped my husband prepare to have me committed.

I looked at Daniel.

"Tell me this is fake.""

He took the phone from Elena.

Then he enlarged the photograph.

"I can't confirm its authenticity from an image.""

"But?""

He looked at the date.

"But I recognize the hospital.""

My mother stepped closer.

"Which hospital?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"St. Andrew's Medical Center. Outside Philadelphia.""

Robert gripped his walking stick.

"That's where William was taken after the accident.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

Robert nodded.

"He was declared dead at the hospital, but the body was never released directly to the funeral home. There was a private transfer.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know the full story until recently.""

My mind raced.

"Are you saying my father survived the accident?""

Robert shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"But he's standing there.""

"Yes.""

"Six months ago.""

"Yes.""

"Then why did everyone tell me he was dead?""

Robert lowered his eyes.

"Because the death certificate was issued eighteen years ago.""

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

"That doesn't answer my question.""

He took a breath.

"Your father was involved in a serious accident. He survived the initial impact, but he suffered extensive injuries. He was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital.""

My mother covered her mouth.

"Robert...""

He continued.

"Thomas arranged for a private medical transfer. The official records were altered, and a death certificate was issued using information provided by someone inside the hospital.""

Daniel looked horrified.

"Who authorized it?""

Robert glanced toward Margaret.

She began shaking her head.

"Don't look at me.""

Robert ignored her.

"Margaret.""

Marcus turned toward his mother.

"Mom?""

She sank into a chair.

"I didn't know he was alive.""

Robert gave her a cold look.

"You knew enough to help create the false records.""

Margaret began crying.

"I thought he was dead.""

"Then why did you keep receiving payments from the hospital?""

She looked up sharply.

Daniel opened his laptop.

"Payments?""

Robert nodded.

"Monthly transfers to a private medical account.""

Daniel searched through the financial documents.

Then he stopped.

"I found them.""

He turned the screen toward us.

The account had received payments from a company controlled by Thomas Whitmore.

The recipient was listed as a private patient care facility.

The payments had continued for seventeen years.

I felt my legs weaken.

"Who was receiving the money?""

Robert answered.

"William.""

I grabbed the back of a chair.

My father had been alive.

For seventeen years.

And I had visited his grave.

I had cried on his birthday.

I had spoken to his photograph when I didn't know how to make a difficult decision.

Meanwhile, someone had been paying to keep him hidden.

"Why?"" I whispered.

Robert's eyes filled.

"Because Thomas needed William alive long enough to authenticate the original trust documents.""

I stared at him.

"Why would that matter?""

"William's signature was required for several transactions. Thomas couldn't legally complete the transfers without it.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't explain why the documents were never submitted.""

Robert looked toward Thomas.

"Because William refused.""

Thomas suddenly laughed.

"Robert, you're telling stories again.""

Robert turned.

"You kept him alive because you needed his signature.""

Thomas's smile faded.

"Prove it.""

Robert removed a small recorder from his pocket.

"I don't need to.""

He pressed a button.

A weak voice filled the ballroom.

It was an older man.

But I recognized it immediately.

"Thomas, I will never sign those documents.""

My heart stopped.

My father's voice.

I hadn't heard it in eighteen years.

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

Thomas's voice answered.

"William, you don't have a choice.""

"I always have a choice.""

"You have a daughter who believes you're dead.""

A long silence followed.

Then my father's voice returned.

"Don't bring Olivia into this.""

"Then sign.""

"No.""

The recording ended.

I was crying openly now.

Robert placed a hand on my shoulder.

"I found that recording two months ago.""

I looked at him.

"Where?""

"In the private facility.""

"Have you seen him?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

"Is he alive now?""

Robert hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me more than anything else.

"Robert.""

He lowered his voice.

"Yes.""

I began shaking.

"Where is he?""

"Safe.""

"Where?""

Robert glanced toward Thomas.

"Somewhere Thomas doesn't know about.""

Thomas suddenly stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

One investigator blocked him.

Thomas pointed at Robert.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

Robert looked directly at him.

"I know exactly what I'm doing.""

Then he turned toward me.

"Olivia, your father asked me to give you something.""

He reached into his jacket and removed a small silver pendant.

It was shaped like a key.

I recognized it immediately.

My father had worn it around his neck in almost every childhood photograph.

"What's this?""

"The key to his private medical file.""

I took it.

It was warm from Robert's pocket.

"Can I see him?""

Robert nodded.

"If you want to.""

I didn't hesitate.

"Yes.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"We should arrange a secure transfer and verify his current condition first.""

Robert agreed.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A weak voice came through.

"Liv?""

My knees nearly gave way.

I knew that voice.

I knew the way he shortened my name.

The way he breathed before saying something important.

"Dad?""

There was a long pause.

Then he whispered:

"Sweetheart, I'm sorry.""

I started crying.

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere safe.""

"Are you really alive?""

A faint laugh came through.

"Last time I checked.""

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

"Why didn't you come home?""

His voice broke.

"Because I thought they would hurt you.""

"Who?""

"Thomas. Margaret. And someone you haven't suspected yet.""

I looked around the ballroom.

"Who?""

He breathed heavily.

"Your father-in-law.""

I frowned.

"Marcus's father?""

"Yes.""

"But Thomas is Marcus's father.""

My father's voice became urgent.

"Olivia, listen carefully. Thomas isn't Marcus's biological father.""

I stared at the phone.

"What?""

"Margaret had a second relationship. She used Thomas to hide the truth, but Marcus's biological father was someone else.""

I looked toward Margaret.

She was watching me.

Her face had gone completely white.

My father continued.

"Marcus's real father is the man who helped arrange my death.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Who?""

Before he could answer, the call disconnected.

I immediately called back.

The number was no longer available.

Robert grabbed my arm.

"Olivia, what happened?""

I repeated everything.

Daniel looked toward Margaret.

"Who is Marcus's biological father?""

Margaret shook her head.

"William is confused.""

"Then tell us the truth.""

She remained silent.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Mom, who is my father?""

She looked at him.

Then she looked at Thomas.

Thomas suddenly reached into his coat.

One of the investigators noticed.

"Sir, keep your hands where I can see them.""

Thomas ignored him.

He pulled out a folded document and threw it onto the table.

"Fine. You want the truth?""

He pointed toward Margaret.

"Ask her about the man she was sleeping with before Marcus was born.""

Margaret began crying.

Marcus stared at her.

"Mom?""

She shook her head.

Thomas laughed.

"Go on. Tell him.""

Margaret finally spoke.

"His name was Edward.""

I looked at her.

"Edward who?""

She whispered:

"Edward Hayes.""

Daniel went completely still.

I recognized the surname.

It was the same surname as the man who had stood beside my father in the photograph eleven years earlier.

Daniel Hayes.

My father's attorney.

I turned toward him.

He was staring at Margaret as though he had just seen a ghost.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

Margaret began sobbing.

"No. It's not.""

Marcus looked between them.

"Who is Edward Hayes?""

Daniel slowly removed his glasses.

Then he answered.

"My father.""

The silence that followed was absolute.

Marcus took a step backward.

"You're saying I'm your brother?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

He looked directly at Margaret.

"Because Edward Hayes wasn't my biological father either.""

He reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed medical record.

"My mother told me the truth before she died.""

He placed the document on the table.

"Edward adopted me. My biological father was William Reed.""

I stared at him.

The man who had protected my father's estate for eleven years.

The man who had defended me tonight.

The man who had been standing beside my family since before I was born.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

"If the records are correct, Marcus and I share the same biological father.""

Marcus shook his head.

"No.""

Daniel continued.

"And Olivia...""

He paused.

"You, Marcus, and I may all be connected through a family secret that goes back further than any of us imagined.""

I couldn't speak.

Then Daniel opened the medical record.

His face drained of color.

Because the final page contained a handwritten note from my father.

Daniel must never learn that his adoption was arranged to conceal the second child.

I looked at him.

"What second child?""

Daniel slowly turned the page.

And beneath the note was a name.

*Ethan Reed.*

My newly discovered brother.

May you like

But the next line was even more disturbing.

Ethan was not the only child born that night.
