Chapter 1 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The photograph landed on the driveway between Daniel and me.

Nobody moved.

Madison was the first to bend down.

She picked it up.

Her face changed immediately.

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?”

Madison held the photograph behind her back.

“Nothing.”

My father stepped forward.

“Give it to me.”

Madison hesitated.

Then she handed it over.

My father looked at it.

His expression became colder.

I recognized the man standing beside Madison.

Ethan Cole.

Daniel's former business partner.

The man Daniel had spent years blaming for Carter Technologies' collapse.

The man Daniel claimed had betrayed him.

The man who had supposedly disappeared after the company nearly went bankrupt.

I looked at Madison.

“When was this taken?”

She said nothing.

Daniel grabbed the photograph from my father's hand.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get this?”

Madison swallowed.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I said I don't know.”

My father took the photograph back.

“There is a date on the back.”

Daniel turned it over.

The date was four years earlier.

Three weeks before Carter Technologies' stock collapsed.

Daniel stared at Madison.

“You met Ethan before the collapse?”

Madison shook her head.

“No.”

My father pointed at the photograph.

“Then explain why you're holding hands with him.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Emily, this is some kind of setup.”

I almost laughed.

“A setup?”

“You know how much Ethan hated me.”

“Yes.”

“He could have manipulated the photograph.”

My father interrupted.

“Not this one.”

He pulled another document from the folder.

A forensic report.

The photograph had been recovered from an encrypted company server.

It had not been edited.

The metadata was intact.

The original file had been created four years earlier.

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

“My investigator.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You knew?”

“No.”

My father answered for me.

“She didn't know everything.”

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Emily, listen to me.”

I moved backward.

“Don't.”

“I can explain.”

“You called me a parasite.”

“I was angry.”

“You brought another woman into our home.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You threw my suitcase into the driveway.”

“I thought the company was mine.”

I looked at him.

“That was your mistake.”

Madison suddenly stepped between us.

“This is ridiculous.”

My father turned toward her.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“This is the beginning.”

He opened the folder again.

“There are bank transfers.”

Daniel froze.

“What bank transfers?”

“Payments made from Carter Technologies to a consulting company.”

Daniel frowned.

“What consulting company?”

My father handed him the document.

Daniel read the name.

Mason Strategic Holdings.

His face changed.

“That company doesn't exist.”

“It existed.”

My father turned another page.

“It was created four months before the stock crash.”

Daniel looked at Madison.

“What does this have to do with her?”

My father placed the photograph beside the bank statement.

“Everything.”

The consulting company had been paid nearly three million dollars.

The money had been transferred into another account.

That account belonged to Madison.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Daniel stared at her.

“You told me you had no money.”

“I didn't.”

“You bought two apartments.”

“I inherited them.”

“From who?”

She didn't answer.

My father stepped closer.

“From Carter Technologies.”

Silence.

Daniel's face went completely white.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

My father pulled out one final document.

A transaction authorization.

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

But the payment had been approved by Madison.

Daniel stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

“No,” my father said.

“You didn't.”

“Then who did?”

My father looked directly at Madison.

“You did.”

Madison's expression hardened.

“You can't prove that.”

My father smiled.

“We already did.”

He handed Daniel another page.

It contained forensic handwriting results.

The signature was forged.

But the fingerprints on the document belonged to Madison.

Daniel took a step backward.

“You stole from my company.”

Madison's voice became sharp.

“Your company?”

She laughed.

“You wouldn't even have a company without me.”

Daniel stared.

“What did you just say?”

Madison realized her mistake.

She covered her mouth.

My father turned to me.

“Now we know why she came here.”

I looked at Madison.

“You weren't here for Daniel.”

She said nothing.

“You were here for the company.”

Her eyes hardened.

“I was here for what I deserved.”

“You never deserved anything from me.”

Daniel looked between us.

Then he whispered:

“What did you do, Madison?”

She suddenly turned toward him.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“I helped keep your company alive.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

“I found investors.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Madison smiled.

“People your wife never knew about.”

My father immediately stepped forward.

“That is enough.”

He looked at me.

“Emily, we need to leave.”

I picked up my suitcase.

Daniel watched me.

“Where are you going?”

I looked at the house.

The house he had just thrown me out of.

Then I looked at my father.

“Home.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“This is your home?”

My father handed me the deed.

“It is.”

Daniel stopped laughing.

I looked at him.

“Not because you gave it to me.”

I held up the deed.

“Because I bought it.”

His face went blank.

The house had been purchased through my trust.

Daniel had never known.

He had lived inside a property he didn't own.

Then my father whispered:

“There's one more thing.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The board meeting is tomorrow morning.”

“Why?”

“Because every director has already received the evidence.”

I stared.

“And?”

My father smiled.

“They're waiting for you.”

That night, I slept in my father's guest room.

For the first time in seven years, I didn't hear Daniel's footsteps.

I didn't hear him arguing on the phone.

I didn't hear Madison laughing.

I slept peacefully.

Until my phone rang at 2:14 a.m.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“Emily, don't go to the board meeting.”

“Who is this?”

“You don't understand what you're walking into.”

“What do you want?”

“If you enter that room tomorrow, they will try to kill you.”

The call ended.

I sat frozen in bed.

Then my father appeared in the doorway.

“Who was that?”

I looked at him.

“Someone just threatened me.”

His expression became serious.

“Give me the phone.”

I handed it over.

He looked at the number.

Then his face changed.

“I know this number.”

“Who?”

May you like

He stared at me.

“Ethan Cole.”
