Chapter 13: The Promise Patricia Never Kept

I stared at the photograph until the room seemed to tilt.

Daniel was standing beside my mother.

He looked younger, perhaps twenty years old, with dark hair and the same unmistakable expression I had come to recognize whenever he was hiding something.

But Daniel was only a few years older than me.

The date on the photograph was fifteen years earlier.

He should have been a child.

I turned the photograph over, searching for an explanation.

The date was real.

So was the handwriting.

The night Nia was born, Daniel's mother made a promise she never intended to keep.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Margaret took the photograph.

"Look at the man's face.""

"I know who it is.""

"No, Nia. Look at his age.""

I studied it again.

The man beside my mother wasn't Daniel.

He was older, perhaps in his late forties, with the same eyes, the same jawline, and the same small scar near his left eyebrow.

It was Robert Hayes.

I felt my stomach drop.

"That's Robert.""

Margaret nodded.

"Which means the photograph has nothing to do with Daniel's age. But it may explain why he was involved in your mother's case.""

Catherine leaned closer.

"Why would Robert have been there when Nia was born?""

Nobody answered.

Then Elena spoke from her chair.

"Because Robert was already involved with Patricia long before Richard died.""

I turned toward her.

"What does that mean?""

Elena looked exhausted.

"Robert and Patricia had a relationship. It began before Patricia married Daniel's father.""

Catherine's face tightened.

"You're saying Daniel is Robert's son?""

Elena nodded.

"Yes.""

I remembered Vanessa's words.

Robert Hayes isn't just Patricia's lawyer. He's Daniel's biological father.

I had believed it was another secret designed to explain Daniel's loyalty to Patricia.

Now it sounded like the center of everything.

"Why was Robert at my birth?"" I asked.

Elena took a breath.

"Your mother went into labor earlier than expected. Richard was out of town. Patricia arrived at the hospital with Robert. She told everyone she was there to help.""

"And?""

"She promised your mother that Richard's inheritance would be protected. She said she would make sure you received what he intended for you.""

I looked down at the photograph.

"Then she betrayed her.""

"Yes.""

Elena continued.

"After you were born, your mother asked Patricia to help secure the original inheritance documents. Patricia agreed. But she gave them to Robert instead.""

Margaret leaned forward.

"Do you know where the documents went?""

Elena shook her head.

"Not then. But I remember something Patricia said.""

"What?""

"She told your mother that a child could inherit money, but a child couldn't defend herself against a family determined to take it.""

I felt anger rising in my chest.

"She knew exactly what she was doing.""

Elena nodded.

"She did.""

Margaret placed the photograph in a protective folder.

"We need to get this authenticated. We also need the original hospital records and the evidence from the chapel.""

"Someone destroyed it," I said.

"Someone removed it. That's not the same thing.""

My phone rang.

Daniel.

This time, I answered.

"What do you want?""

His voice sounded strained.

"Where are you?""

"Why?""

"Because Patricia is losing control. You don't understand what you've walked into.""

I laughed bitterly.

"I understand more than you think.""

"Listen to me. You need to stop talking to Elena.""

"Why? Because she knows what happened to my mother?""

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "You don't know what happened to your mother.""

"Then tell me.""

"I can't.""

"You can. You're choosing not to.""

He exhaled sharply.

"Meet me. Alone.""

"No.""

"Please, Nia. There's something you need to know about the night your father died.""

I looked at Margaret.

She mouthed, Don't agree.

I didn't.

"Say it now.""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Your father didn't die because of the medication.""

My blood went cold.

"Then what happened?""

"He was already dying when I arrived.""

"Why were you there?""

"Because he asked me to come.""

I gripped the phone.

"What did he want?""

"He wanted me to tell you the truth about Patricia.""

"And what truth is that?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

"Patricia wasn't trying to steal your inheritance because she wanted the money.""

I stared at the wall.

"Then why?""

"Because your biological father had evidence that could destroy her entire family.""

"What evidence?""

Daniel's voice trembled.

"Evidence that Robert Hayes had arranged the disappearance of Richard's original will.""

The call disconnected.

I immediately called back.

He didn't answer.

Margaret stood.

"We're going to the police.""

"Not yet.""

"Nia—"

"If Daniel knows something, I need him to say it on record.""

"He's dangerous.""

"I know.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"That's why I need to hear what he has to say.""

An hour later, Daniel sent an address.

A closed restaurant near the waterfront.

Margaret insisted on accompanying me and arranged for an investigator to remain nearby.

Daniel was already seated when we arrived.

He looked older than I remembered.

His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands shook when he reached for his glass.

"You came," he said.

"I came for answers.""

He looked at Margaret.

"I asked for her alone.""

"She's my attorney," I replied.

"If you don't like it, leave.""

Daniel looked down.

Then he began.

"Patricia told me your father was trying to destroy us. She said he had discovered the money transfers and planned to report them.""

"Us?""

"Her, Robert, and me.""

I stared at him.

"Why were you involved?""

"Because Robert promised me a position in the company. He said I'd eventually control the voting shares.""

"And the house?""

"Collateral. The mortgage was supposed to cover the money Patricia had moved.""

"So you were willing to put my home at risk.""

He nodded.

I waited.

"Why did you marry me?""

His eyes filled.

"At first, because Patricia told me it would make things easier.""

The answer landed harder than any insult.

"And later?""

He rubbed his face.

"Later, I loved parts of our life. I loved being with you. But I was already in too deep.""

I felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not grief.

Just an unbearable clarity.

"What happened the night my father died?""

Daniel looked toward the window.

"Your father called me. He wanted me to come to the hospital. He said he had something that would end Patricia's control over the company.""

"What was it?""

"A copy of Richard's original will.""

I leaned forward.

"Where is it?""

"Robert took it.""

"Why?""

"Because it named you as the controlling beneficiary. It also contained a clause that could remove anyone who concealed your existence from the board.""

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"Who else knew?""

"Patricia. Robert. Your father. And me.""

I stared at him.

"Did you know my father was being given the wrong medication?""

Daniel covered his face.

"I knew something was wrong.""

"Did you stop it?""

"No.""

His voice cracked.

I stood.

"You watched him die.""

"I didn't know he would die!""

"But you knew he was being harmed.""

He started crying.

"Patricia told me it was only supposed to make him confused. She said he would be declared incompetent, and she could take control of the trust.""

Margaret's expression hardened.

"Who administered the medication?""

"Dr. Pierce. Robert arranged it.""

I felt sick.

"Then why did you lie?""

"Because Patricia said if I told anyone, she'd destroy me.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Did you know about my mother's death?""

Daniel's face changed.

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

"Yes," he whispered.

Before I could ask another question, a car pulled up outside.

Daniel glanced through the window.

His face went white.

"She's here.""

"Who?""

He stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"Patricia.""

The restaurant door opened.

Patricia walked inside, followed by Robert Hayes.

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

Her expression was almost amused.

"How touching," she said.

"A family reunion.""

Margaret stepped between us.

"Nobody is going anywhere until we finish this conversation.""

Patricia smiled.

"Then perhaps we should discuss the one thing Nia still doesn't know.""

She turned toward me.

"Your mother didn't die because she discovered the inheritance documents.""

May you like

Her eyes narrowed.

"She died because she discovered who your biological father really was.""
