Chapter 8: The Witnesses He Tried To Silence

The next forty-eight hours changed everything.

Marcus moved faster than I had ever seen him move.

He contacted former employees, reviewed company records, and began building a timeline of Grant’s actions.

But Grant wasn’t waiting quietly.

He went public.

By Friday morning, a business article appeared claiming there were “concerns” about my leadership.

Concerns.

That was the word people used when they wanted to destroy someone politely.

The article didn’t accuse me directly.

It didn’t need to.

It suggested.

It questioned.

It planted doubt.

That was Grant’s specialty.

He didn’t throw punches.

He convinced people there was something wrong with the person being punched.

Then came the company meeting.

Grant stood in front of the executive team wearing a dark suit and a concerned expression.

The same expression he wore at my father’s funeral.

The same expression that fooled everyone.

“I want everyone to know,” he said, “that my priority has always been protecting this company.””

I watched from the back of the room.

Protecting.

That word almost made me laugh.

Then he said:

“Recently, Evelyn has been under tremendous stress.””

There it was.

The story.

The one he had been preparing.

People looked at me.

Not with anger.

With uncertainty.

And uncertainty is sometimes more dangerous than hate.

Grant continued.

“I think we all need to consider what is best for the future of the company.””

I stepped forward.

The room became quiet.

“Interesting.””

Grant turned.

His smile disappeared slightly.

“Evelyn.””

“I’ve been listening to you talk about protecting this company.””

I walked closer.

“But I have a question.””

“What?””

“Who protects a company from the person trying to steal it?””

The room shifted.

Grant’s face remained calm.

But I saw it.

The fear.

Small.

Hidden.

But real.

“I don’t know what you’re implying.””

“I think you do.””

Marcus entered behind me carrying a folder.

“We have documentation showing unauthorized transfers, forged corporate filings, and attempts to establish a false medical narrative regarding Mrs. Hart.””

The room erupted.

Grant looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No,” I said.

“I made the mistake of trusting you.””

For the first time, his mask cracked.

“You think this proves anything?””

I held his gaze.

“No.””

I smiled slightly.

“Not everything.””

His expression changed.

Because he knew.

We had more.

After the meeting, we met with three former employees who had been afraid to speak.

One was my father’s former assistant.

Another was a financial officer who had noticed suspicious transfers.

The third was a security employee from the marina.

The security employee placed a file on the table.

“I kept copies because something didn’t feel right.””

Inside were camera records.

From the night of my father’s death.

My hands went cold.

“Why didn’t you come forward?””

The man looked down.

“Because Grant threatened my job.””

Marcus opened the footage.

The quality was poor.

But there he was.

Grant.

At my father’s house.

Hours before the ambulance arrived.

I watched the screen.

The man who told me he came after everything happened was there before it happened.

My entire body felt numb.

Then the footage showed something else.

Grant leaving.

With James Holloway.

Together.

Celia covered her mouth.

“My mother was right.””

Marcus paused the video.

“We need to move carefully.””

But I was no longer thinking like a woman trying to save her company.

I was thinking like a daughter.

A daughter who had spent years believing her father died without answers.

A daughter who had been manipulated into forgetting pieces of her own life.

A daughter who finally understood why Grant wanted control over everything.

Because the truth was more dangerous than losing money.

The truth could take away the one thing he valued most.

His image.

That night, I stood alone in my office.

The city lights reflected against the windows.

My father’s letter sat beside me.

The old photograph.

The evidence.

The memories.

For years, I thought Grant stole my future.

I was wrong.

May you like

He tried to steal my past.

And now I was going to take it back.
