Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Robert Carter stood beyond the shattered conservatory windows as if he had been waiting for us to discover him.
He wore a dark coat.
His hair was almost completely gray.
But his face was unmistakable.
I had seen that face in old photographs.
I had heard my mother describe it in nightmares.
And now he was standing in my garden.
Alive.
My mother gripped my arm so tightly that her fingernails dug into my skin.
“He can't be here.””
Daniel stared through the broken glass.
“My father…”
Robert lifted one hand.
“Hello, Daniel.””
Daniel went completely still.
The police officers rushed toward the conservatory.
“Sir! Step away from the house!””
Robert didn't move.
Instead, he smiled.
“Still protecting the Whitmore girl?””
My mother flinched.
The officer raised his weapon.
“Get on your knees.””
Robert looked amused.
“You really think this is going to end with handcuffs?””
Thomas grabbed my shoulder.
“Claire, stay down.””
A second figure appeared behind Robert.
Then a third.
My stomach dropped.
“There are more of them.””
Thomas nodded.
“I see them.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“What do you want?””
Robert's smile disappeared.
“The ledger.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked down.
Thomas still had it.
My fingers tightened around the black cover.
My mother whispered:
“Don't give it to him.””
Robert heard her.
“Evelyn.””
She stood slowly.
“You shouldn't have come.””
He laughed.
“You've been hiding for three years.””
“I was trying to protect my daughter.””
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
My mother stepped in front of me.
Robert's expression hardened.
“Move.””
“No.””
“You've done enough damage.””
His eyes shifted toward me.
“Claire.””
I felt a chill.
He knew my name.
Of course he did.
He had known me before I knew him.
“You look like your father,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Why are you alive?””
Robert's eyes flicked toward Daniel.
“Your husband never told you?””
Daniel looked horrified.
“Told her what?””
Robert smiled.
“That I disappeared.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does he mean?””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father died.””
Robert laughed.
“No.””
The sound was quiet.
Almost gentle.
“I made sure everyone believed I died.””
My mother closed her eyes.
Robert continued.
“Your aunt knew.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Margaret knew you survived.””
“Yes.””
“And she never told Claire?””
“She was going to.””
I looked at Thomas.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Robert smiled.
“She never had the chance.””
The police officer shouted again.
“Drop whatever you have and get on the ground!””
Robert ignored him.
“Thomas.””
Thomas stiffened.
“You remember me.””
“Unfortunately.””
Robert glanced at the ledger.
“You've kept it all these years.””
“It belonged to Margaret.””
“It belongs to Claire now.””
Robert's expression changed.
“No.””
He pointed at me.
“It belongs to my daughter.””
My entire body went cold.
“My what?””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What did you say?””
Robert looked directly at me.
“You heard me.””
My mother stepped between us.
“Don't.””
Robert's face hardened.
“You don't get to protect her from the truth anymore.””
I looked at my mother.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn't answer.
“Mom.””
Nothing.
“Tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Robert spoke for her.
“Your father was not your biological father.””
The world seemed to stop.
I heard the words.
But my mind refused to understand them.
Daniel whispered, “No.””
Robert continued.
“Your mother married your father because she needed a respectable name for the child.””
My mother shouted.
“Enough!””
She turned toward me.
“Claire, please.””
I stepped backward.
“Is it true?””
She couldn't speak.
“Mom.””
She covered her mouth.
Then nodded.
One movement.
Barely visible.
But enough.
My knees weakened.
Daniel caught my arm.
I pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
He froze.
Robert watched us.
“You see?””
He pointed toward Daniel.
“The Carter family has been lying to you for generations.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Robert, stop.””
“No.””
Robert's voice became harder.
“She deserves to know.””
He looked at me.
“Your father was never your father.””
I stared at him.
“Then who are you?””
Robert smiled.
“I am your biological father.””
The words struck with physical force.
I couldn't breathe.
My mother began crying.
Daniel stood motionless.
Thomas looked stunned.
One of the police officers glanced at the others.
The garden seemed impossibly quiet.
I looked at Robert.
“You abandoned me.””
“I protected you.””
“You disappeared.””
“I had to.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“If people knew I was alive, they would come after you.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
Robert's face softened.
“You have no idea what was at stake.””
I stepped toward the broken window.
“What was at stake?””
“The money.””
“Of course.””
I pointed at the ledger.
“The money.””
Robert nodded.
“Your aunt hid it because she knew they would use you to get it.””
“Who?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Your husband's family.””
Daniel flinched.
“You're lying.””
Robert laughed.
“Ask your father.””
“My father is dead.””
Robert's expression changed.
“No.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“Your father is alive too.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“That isn't possible.””
Robert looked toward the driveway.
“He's been living under another name.””
Thomas suddenly turned pale.
“Robert.””
“What?””
Thomas stared at him.
“You said there were three people who knew the location of the ledger.””
“Yes.””
“Who are the other two?””
Robert smiled.
“You already met one.””
He looked toward the mansion.
“Evelyn.””
My mother stiffened.
“And the third?””
Robert's eyes moved toward Daniel.
“Your husband.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know anything.””
Robert laughed.
“You know exactly what your father told you.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“What did my father tell me?””
Robert said quietly:
“That Claire is the key.””
A gunshot cracked through the night.
The sound exploded across the garden.
Everyone dropped.
The conservatory wall shook.
Glass rained onto the floor.
One of the police officers shouted:
“DOWN!””
Thomas pulled me behind the stone planter.
My mother crawled toward us.
Daniel grabbed the other side.
Robert disappeared behind a tree.
“Where did it come from?”” someone shouted.
Thomas looked toward the eastern hedge.
“There!””
Another shot.
The police returned fire.
I covered my ears.
My mother grabbed me.
“Stay down!””
I looked at her.
“Who is shooting?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Robert shouted from outside.
“Claire!””
I looked toward the garden.
“Don't listen to him!””
My mother pulled me down.
“He wants you to come out.””
“Why?””
“Because you're the only person he can't control.””
Thomas leaned toward us.
“No.””
My mother looked at him.
“What?””
“He isn't trying to get Claire.””
Thomas looked toward the ledger.
“He's trying to get the ledger.””
My grip tightened around it.
A bullet struck the stone planter.
I screamed.
Daniel covered my head.
Another shot.
Then silence.
A terrible silence.
The police officer slowly raised his head.
“It's stopped.””
Thomas looked outside.
“Not for long.””
He reached for the ledger.
“We need to move.””
I held on.
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No.””
I looked at the book.
There was something between the pages.
A loose photograph.
I pulled it free.
It showed three people.
My mother.
Robert.
And my father.
But that wasn't what shocked me.
They were standing outside this same mansion.
And my mother was pregnant.
On the back was a date.
Three months before I was born.
Thomas looked at it.
His face went pale.
“What?””
I handed him the photograph.
He stared at it.
“This changes everything.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I hoped she would never find that.””
I turned to her.
“Was Dad there when I was born?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Was Robert?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at the photograph.
Then at Robert in the garden.
“Why did you give me to Dad?””
My mother started crying.
“He saved us.””
“Who?””
“My father?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed toward Thomas.
“Him.””
Everyone looked at Thomas.
He went completely still.
I stared at him.
“You?””
Thomas said nothing.
My mother whispered:
“Thomas Harris arranged your father's disappearance.””
I felt numb.
“My father wasn't dead.””
“No.””
“He's alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
My mother looked toward Robert.
Robert stepped from behind the tree.
“The same place he's been hiding since the night you were born.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Where?””
Robert smiled.
“Ask Thomas.””
I turned.
Thomas looked away.
My heart pounded.
“You know where my father is.””
Thomas finally met my eyes.
“Yes.””
“Tell me.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because if I tell you, they will know exactly where to find him.””
Robert shouted from the garden.
“They already know!””
Then headlights appeared beyond the trees.
Not police cars.
A black sedan rolled slowly up the driveway.
My mother looked at it.
Her face went white.
“That’s him.””
I stared.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Your father.””
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Gray-haired.
He looked toward the mansion.
Then toward Robert.
And finally toward me.
Even from across the distance, I recognized the face from the photographs.
My father.
Alive.
Robert raised his hand.
“Now,” he called.
The man by the car did not answer.
Instead, he looked directly at Thomas.
Then he shouted:
“Tell Claire the truth before her husband finds out what she really is.””
Daniel turned toward me.
“What does that mean?””
I didn't know.
Then I looked down at the ledger.
The final page had opened by itself.
Beneath the account numbers was one handwritten sentence.
*Claire is not the beneficiary.*
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Underneath it, another line appeared.
*She is the inheritance.*
