Chapter 9 - SAMANTHA TOLD ME WHY SHE NEVER WANTED DANIEL BACK

Years later, I met Samantha by accident at conference.
No hostility.
We got coffee.
She said:
“I owe you apology.”
“For buying my house?”
“Trying.”
She smiled.
“For taking Patricia at her word too long.”
Her compliance team had concerns earlier.
She could have called me directly.
She didn’t because Patricia insisted Claire “didn’t handle business.”
Sexist hierarchy.
Samantha accepted.
“I should have verified owner consent before letting negotiations advance that far.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
Then I asked:
“Did Patricia really think you and Daniel would reunite?”
Samantha laughed.
“Yes.”
“Would you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
She stirred coffee.
“Same reason I left first time.”
Patricia.
Then she said:
“Daniel was kind. Smart. But every disagreement became a triangle.”
That line.
“I never knew whether I was dating him or negotiating with his mother.”
I understood.
Then:
“He’s different now.”
“I know.”
No threat.
Just observation.
Then she said:
“I'm glad.”
Good.
No forced rivalry.
Women do not need fight over man.
Then I told Daniel meeting.
He smiled.
“Did she insult me?”
“A little.”
“Fair.”
Transparency.
Then Patricia eventually wrote memoir? No.
Too much.
Better she volunteered at financial-literacy nonprofit for older adults? Maybe feels redemption. Could, but avoid saint.
She simply lived.
Paid restitution.
Maintained limited family.
Enough.
Then Dad aged.
He kept original deed copy in safe.
On my fiftieth birthday, he gave it.
I said:
“Why?”
“You don’t need me to carry it.”
Emotional independence.
He had been protector in opening.
Now no need.
I framed? No.
Stored.
Then he said:
“You know I was terrified that day.”
“You looked calm.”
“That was theater.”
Interesting.
He heard Claire and Noah locked.
Drove fast? no unsafe. Called police.
Property records already because Patricia had requested title abstract? Dad perhaps knew due my earlier concern. Fine.
He said:
“I brought folder because you had asked me week earlier to check why title company called.”
Ah.
We hadn't mentioned. Could fit.
Patricia had begun sale process, title company contacted me indirectly, I asked Dad investigate.
So his arrival with records not magical.
He was already reviewing.
Good.
Then Dad said:
“I hoped it was misunderstanding.”
“It wasn’t.”
“No.”
Then:
“I’m proud you said no before I arrived.”
