Chapter 6: The Daughter Diane Buried

We met Elena Vale at a small café in Cambridge shortly after noon.

She chose the location herself and insisted that we arrive separately. Evelyn said it was unusual, but not unreasonable, given the nature of the allegations.

Arthur arrived with Marcus.

I came with Lily.

Elena was already seated in a corner booth when we entered.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair pulled into a loose knot and a thin gold ring on her right hand. Her face was lined, but her eyes were sharp.

When she saw Arthur, she stood.

“You look older than I expected,” she said.

Arthur stopped a few feet from the table.

“I don't believe we've met.””

“No,” Elena replied.

“We haven't. But I've heard about you for forty-six years.””

She looked at Marcus.

“And you must be the son.””

Marcus nodded cautiously.

“I'm Marcus.””

Elena's gaze moved to Lily.

“And this is Rebecca's little girl.””

Lily held my hand tighter.

Elena immediately softened.

“Hello, sweetheart. You have your mother's eyes.””

Lily studied her.

“Did you know my mom?””

Elena swallowed.

“Yes. I knew her very well.””

She looked at the empty seat beside her.

“Please sit down. There's a great deal you need to understand.””

We ordered coffee, but nobody touched it.

Elena placed a worn envelope on the table.

Inside were photographs, letters, and copies of documents that looked decades old.

The first photograph showed two teenage girls standing in front of a brick house.

One was unmistakably Diane, though much younger. Her hair was dark, and her smile looked almost innocent.

The other girl had the same eyes.

But she was taller, with a narrow face and a small scar beneath her chin.

Elena touched the photograph.

“Diane was seventeen when this was taken. Her sister, Catherine, was fifteen.””

Arthur stared at the image.

“Diane had a sister named Catherine?””

“Yes.””

“Why did she tell everyone she was an only child?””

Elena gave a bitter laugh.

“Because Catherine inherited something Diane wanted.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What?””

“Not money. Not at first. Something far more valuable to Diane.””

Elena pulled another photograph from the envelope.

It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

“This was Catherine's daughter.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Who was the father?””

“A young man from a wealthy family. He promised Catherine he would marry her, then disappeared when she became pregnant.””

Arthur's expression tightened.

“And Diane?””

“Diane believed Catherine had ruined the family's reputation. She was obsessed with being admired. She thought a scandal would destroy every chance she had of marrying well.””

Elena paused.

“So she convinced our parents to send Catherine away. They told everyone the baby had died shortly after birth.””

Lily looked up.

“Was the baby really dead?””

Elena shook her head.

“No, sweetheart.””

She pushed the photograph toward us.

“The baby survived.””

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“Where is she now?””

Elena looked at Arthur.

“That's the question Diane has been trying to prevent anyone from answering.””

She opened the envelope and removed a birth certificate.

The baby's name was Catherine's choice.

Rebecca.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“No.””

Elena nodded.

“Rebecca was Catherine's daughter.””

Marcus stared at the certificate.

“Rebecca's mother was Margaret. That's what she told me.””

“Margaret raised Rebecca after Catherine was forced to leave,” Elena explained.

“She was a relative who agreed to care for the child. Catherine was told she had no legal right to return.””

Arthur rubbed his forehead.

“Why didn't Catherine fight?””

“She did. For years. She wrote letters.

She hired lawyers when she could afford them. But Diane and our parents had money and connections. They made sure Catherine's petitions disappeared.””

Elena's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“By the time Catherine could prove what had happened, Rebecca had grown up believing Margaret was her biological mother.””

Marcus stared at the documents.

“Rebecca never knew?””

“She knew something was wrong. She began searching when she was in her twenties, but Diane convinced her that Catherine had abandoned her.””

I remembered Rebecca's name on the trust documents.

I remembered the clause that named Elena as an independent representative.

And I remembered Diane's voice on the recording.

If she comes back, everything I've built will belong to her.

“Why would Rebecca's inheritance belong to Catherine?”” I asked.

Elena looked at me.

“Because Catherine was the original beneficiary of a family trust. When Rebecca was born, a portion of that trust was set aside for her. Diane believed the money should have been hers.””

Arthur sat rigidly.

“My family trust?””

“No,” Elena replied.

“The Vale family trust. Catherine's grandfather established it before either girl was born. It was separate from your estate, Arthur.””

She paused.

“But after Rebecca married Marcus, Diane discovered that Rebecca had inherited rights connected to that trust. She became obsessed with controlling them.””

Marcus looked sick.

“Mom never mentioned any of this.””

“Of course she didn't. If she had, someone might have asked why she spent decades trying to keep Catherine away.””

Elena pulled another document from the envelope.

“This is a letter Catherine sent Rebecca two years before Rebecca died.””

Marcus took it carefully.

The paper was faded, and the handwriting was shaky.

He read the first few lines silently.

Then he began reading aloud.

My darling Rebecca,

I have spent my life being told that I abandoned you. I need you to know that I never stopped searching for you. I was told you were dead, then told you had been adopted, and finally told you wanted nothing to do with me.

Marcus's voice broke.

He continued.

If you choose never to meet me, I will respect that. But if you ever want the truth, I will be here.

The letter ended with an address and a telephone number.

Marcus lowered it.

“Did Rebecca ever receive this?””

Elena nodded.

“She did.””

“Then why didn't she contact Catherine?””

“She did. They met privately twice.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“Rebecca met her biological mother?””

“Yes.””

He stared at the letter.

“She never told me.””

“Perhaps she intended to. Perhaps she was afraid of upsetting the family. I don't know.””

Elena's voice softened.

“Rebecca was trying to protect Lily. She had discovered that Diane was asking questions about the trust. She was worried that if Diane learned the full details, she'd find a way to interfere.””

Arthur leaned forward.

“Are you saying Diane knew Rebecca had discovered the truth?””

“Absolutely.””

Elena removed one final document.

It was a letter dated three weeks before Rebecca died.

The handwriting belonged to Rebecca.

I watched Marcus read it.

His face became increasingly pale.

Then he whispered, “Oh, God.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

He passed me the letter.

Mother,

I know who Catherine is now. I know what happened when I was born, and I know what Aunt Diane did to keep us apart.

I also know about the trust. If anything happens to me, Lily's inheritance must remain protected. Please make sure no one can use my death to gain control of it.

The letter was signed with Rebecca's name.

But the final paragraph had been written in a different pen.

If Diane approaches you about changing the beneficiary, do not sign anything. She has already threatened to destroy the family if I tell Arthur the truth.

I looked up slowly.

Arthur's eyes were wet.

“She knew,” he whispered.

“Rebecca knew.””

Elena nodded.

“She tried to warn you.””

Marcus folded the letter carefully.

“Why didn't you come forward before now?””

Elena looked at him for a long time.

“Because Catherine died six months ago.””

The words settled over the table.

“I found these documents among her belongings,” Elena continued.

“She had spent years trying to correct the record. Before she died, she asked me to find Rebecca's daughter and make sure the inheritance was protected.””

Lily looked confused.

“Is Catherine my grandma?””

Elena's eyes filled.

“Yes, sweetheart. She was your grandmother.””

Lily looked down at her hands.

“Why didn't she come to see me?””

Elena reached across the table, stopping just short of touching her.

“Because people lied to her. She believed she was protecting your mother by staying away.””

Lily's lower lip trembled.

“Did she know I existed?””

“Every day of her life.””

Lily began to cry silently.

I pulled her close.

Marcus covered his face with both hands.

For the first time, the mystery had a shape.

Diane had not merely hidden a sister.

She had helped erase a mother from her daughter's life, then tried to control the inheritance that should have protected the next generation.

But one question remained.

“Why put my name on the transfer?”” I asked.

Elena looked at me.

“Because Diane needed someone to blame. Someone outside the family. Someone she could convince everyone had married into the Carters for money.””

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“She intended to use Nia as a scapegoat.””

“Yes,” Elena replied.

“And if the transfer went through, she could claim Nia had manipulated Marcus and stolen control of the estate.””

Marcus looked at me, shame etched across his face.

“I let her make you feel unwelcome for two years.””

I didn't answer.

There was nothing he could say that would undo it.

Elena slid the photographs back into the envelope.

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

We all looked at her.

“Catherine believed Diane had an accomplice. Someone who helped her alter the family records and prepare the fraudulent documents.””

Arthur leaned forward.

“Who?””

Elena hesitated.

“I don't know his full name. Catherine only knew him as a lawyer who had represented Diane for years.””

Marcus went completely still.

“Did he have a name?””

Elena nodded.

“Catherine wrote it down before she died.””

She reached into the envelope and removed a small, folded piece of paper.

On it was a name and a law firm's address.

Marcus read it once.

Then he read it again.

His chair scraped backward.

“No,” he whispered.

Arthur took the paper from him.

His expression hardened.

Because the lawyer Elena had named was not a stranger.

He was the man who had handled the Carter family's legal affairs for more than twenty years.

And his name was already written on the fraudulent transfer document.

*Daniel Whitmore.*

The same man who had helped Marcus navigate his first marriage, settle Rebecca's estate, and establish Lily's inheritance.

The same man Arthur trusted with nearly every secret the family possessed.

And now we had reason to believe he had been helping Diane destroy the very family he was paid to protect.
