Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEADI didn’t sleep that night.

How could I?
Every memory I had of my childhood was being rewritten.
The stories my father told me.
The lessons he taught me.
The way my mother always defended him.
All of it suddenly felt uncertain.
Because if my mother could hide a brother from me for twenty-seven years…
What else could she hide?
At 6:13 the next morning, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Normally, I ignored calls like that.
But something inside me told me to answer.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man spoke.
“Daniel Carter?”
My body froze.
“Yes.”
“You found the box.”
I stood up immediately.
“Who is this?”
The man breathed out slowly.
“My name is Nathan.”
I couldn’t speak.
The room felt smaller.
“Nathan… Carter?”
“Yes.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
The impossible person.
The missing brother.
The man my family erased.
“You’re alive.”
A bitter laugh came through the phone.
“Apparently, I was inconvenient enough that everyone preferred I wasn’t.”
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?”
“That doesn’t matter yet.”
“Then what matters?”
His answer was quiet.
“The truth.”
I looked toward the hallway where my children were sleeping.
“What happened?”
Nathan was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.”
“I know.”
“No, Daniel.”
His voice became serious.
“You don’t know.”
A chill went through me.
“You think he caused the accident?”
“No.”
Pause.
“He caused what happened before it.”
I gripped the phone.
“What does that mean?”
Nathan answered:
“It means your father was about to expose someone.”
“Who?”
Another silence.
Then:
“Your mother.”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
Nathan sighed.
“That’s what I thought too.”
I sat down.
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because I have proof.”
“What proof?”
“Proof that your mother has spent twenty years protecting the wrong person.”
I looked at the kitchen.
At the place where my mother had sat drinking coffee while my children cried inside a locked shed.
For the first time…
I wondered if I ever truly knew her.
Nathan continued.
“Daniel, there’s something you need to know.”
“What?”
“Your father didn’t leave behind one secret.”
“He left behind a warning.”
“What warning?”
Nathan’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Never trust the person who tells you they’re protecting you.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Because those words were not just about my father.
They were about my mother.
And then I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Ethan was standing there.
He looked scared.
“Dad?”
I quickly hid my emotions.
“What happened, buddy?”
He held something in his hand.
Something small.
Something I had never seen before.
“Grandma dropped this yesterday.”
I took it.
A key.
An old metal key.
Attached to it was a tag.
A number.
Room 317.
I looked at Ethan.
“Where did you find this?”
He hesitated.
“In the shed.”
My heart sank.
Because I suddenly realized…
My children hadn’t just discovered the box.
They had discovered a doorway.
A doorway into everything my family had spent years hiding.
May you like
And now…
I was going to open it.
