Chapter 12: My Father's Final Protection
The safety deposit box was opened the following morning.
Daniel accompanied me to the bank, along with an independent trustee and a representative from the legal department.
Nia stayed home.
She was exhausted, and I refused to let her spend another day dealing with people who had made her pregnancy miserable.
Before leaving, I kissed her forehead.
"Call me if you need anything.""
She held my hand.
"Bring back the truth.""
I nodded.
"I will.""
At the bank, an employee led us into a private room.
The key Thomas had given us opened a small metal box.
Inside were several sealed envelopes, an old USB drive, two property deeds, and a handwritten notebook.
Daniel carefully photographed everything before removing the documents.
The first envelope contained the original trust agreement.
The second contained a letter addressed to me.
The third had my mother's name written across it.
I stared at that one.
"Why would Dad leave a letter for her?""
Daniel examined the seal.
"Let's review the trust first.""
He opened the agreement.
The first pages were filled with legal language, investment schedules, and instructions concerning the inheritance.
But the final section was what mattered.
My father had established two separate funds.
The first was the $2.4 million inheritance intended for his first grandchild.
The second was a $900,000 reserve intended to protect the child's mother and provide financial stability during the early years of parenthood.
I looked at Daniel.
"That means Nia was supposed to receive the second fund?""
"Yes. Under the original conditions.""
I continued reading.
The trust explicitly stated that neither Diane nor Thomas could control the money.
An independent trustee would manage the assets.
The child would receive access at the age of twenty-five.
The mother would receive financial support for housing, childcare, and education-related expenses.
Then I reached the final clause.
It was written in unusually direct language.
No person shall use intimidation, deception, forged documents, or family pressure to obtain control over the beneficiary or the beneficiary's parent.
I read it twice.
Daniel nodded.
"That's the clause Thomas mentioned.""
I looked at the next paragraph.
Any individual found to have deliberately interfered with the beneficiary's parental relationship or attempted to misappropriate trust assets shall forfeit all discretionary benefits under this agreement.
I exhaled.
My father had anticipated exactly what my mother was doing.
But there was more.
The agreement included a condition concerning my mother's residence.
If Diane attempted to interfere with the trust, the independent trustee could suspend the monthly financial allowance my father had established for her.
I looked at Daniel.
"How much was she receiving?""
He checked the schedule.
"Approximately $8,000 per month, plus property expenses.""
I sat back.
For years, I had believed my mother depended entirely on me.
I paid her utilities, repairs, medical bills, and travel expenses.
But my father had already provided for her.
She had been receiving money from the trust while asking me for additional support.
I felt betrayed all over again.
Daniel opened the notebook.
It contained handwritten entries about investments, transfers, and meetings.
Some entries included dates.
One caught my attention.
*October 14 — Diane requested early access to the family inheritance. Refused. Thomas disagrees.*
Another entry read:
*November 3 — Diane insists Marcus should not marry Nia. Claims the child will complicate the family arrangement.*
I stared at the words.
My father had known about my mother's objections before the wedding.
He had known she wanted control.
Then I found an entry dated three days before his death.
*November 19 — Diane and Thomas confronted me about the trust. I will not change the beneficiary. If anything happens, Marcus must receive the original documents.*
I felt my throat tighten.
My father's death certificate listed November 22.
Three days later.
I looked at Daniel.
"Do you think this is enough to investigate his death?""
Daniel closed the notebook.
"It's enough to justify a serious review of the circumstances, especially alongside Thomas's statement and the emergency call records. But we must let the authorities determine whether anything criminal occurred.""
I nodded.
Then I opened the envelope addressed to my mother.
Inside was a letter.
I recognized my father's handwriting.
I read it silently.
Diane,
I have spent thirty years trying to make our marriage work. I have supported you, defended you, and forgiven things I should never have forgiven.
But I will not allow you to use our son or his future children as a source of money.
You have repeatedly asked me to change the trust so that you can control the inheritance. I have refused.
If you ever attempt to separate Marcus from his child for financial reasons, you will lose my support.
I hope you understand that I am not doing this to punish you. I am doing it because I know what happens when money becomes more important than family.
Robert.
I placed the letter down.
Daniel waited.
Then he said, "There's one more item.""
He removed the USB drive.
"Your father labeled this as a personal recording.""
I looked at him.
"Can we play it?""
"Yes.""
The bank representative provided a secure computer.
Daniel connected the drive.
A video appeared.
My father was sitting in his study.
He looked tired, but his eyes were clear.
He was speaking directly to the camera.
"Marcus, if you're watching this, I hope I'm wrong about everything.""
I felt my chest tighten.
My father continued.
"I need you to understand something about your mother. She has always wanted control over the family finances. At first, I thought it was because she feared being left without security.""
He paused.
"But lately, I've discovered that she has been working with Thomas to move money without my knowledge.""
I leaned forward.
My father's expression became more serious.
"I confronted them. Diane insisted that she was protecting the family. Thomas admitted that money had been transferred, but he refused to explain where it went.""
He looked directly into the camera.
"There's another reason I created the trust.""
I stopped breathing.
"Your mother once told me that she believed the first grandchild should belong to the entire family, not just the parents.""
My hands tightened.
"She said a child should be raised by whoever has the most resources.""
My father's face hardened.
"I told her that was nonsense. A child belongs with loving parents, not whoever has the biggest bank account.""
I looked down.
Then he continued.
"If Nia is the woman you choose to build your life with, protect her. Do not let anyone convince you that she must earn the right to be your child's mother.""
My eyes burned.
My father had known.
He had known my mother might try to undermine Nia.
And he had tried to protect her before she even became pregnant.
The video ended with one final sentence.
"Marcus, if Diane is watching this with you, I want her to hear something too.""
My father leaned closer to the camera.
"Stop hurting our son because you cannot control his life.""
The screen went black.
I sat silently.
Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry.""
I nodded.
Then I picked up my phone and called Nia.
She answered immediately.
"Marcus?""
"I found it.""
"Found what?""
"Dad's original trust documents.""
I heard her exhale.
"What do they say?""
I explained the inheritance, the protection fund, and the clause that could remove my mother's financial benefits.
Nia was quiet for a moment.
Then she asked:
"Did your father leave anything for your mother?""
I looked at the letter.
"Yes. He left her financial support.""
"Then why did she need more?""
I had no answer.
After a moment, Nia spoke again.
"Marcus, I don't want our baby growing up thinking money is what makes a family.""
I smiled sadly.
"Neither do I.""
I promised to return soon.
Before ending the call, she said:
"There's something strange I need to tell you.""
I straightened.
"What?""
"I received a message from your mother.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she say?""
"She asked me to meet her.""
"Absolutely not.""
"She said she has something important to tell me about your father.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What exactly did she write?""
Nia read the message aloud.
"Nia, I know I've made mistakes. But before you destroy this family, you deserve to know what really happened the night Robert died. Meet me tomorrow. Come alone.""
I closed my eyes.
My mother was still trying to control the situation.
Still trying to isolate my wife.
Still trying to make Nia responsible for decisions she had never agreed to.
I told Nia not to respond.
Then I called Daniel.
He listened to the message and said we should preserve it.
But before we could discuss the next step, another notification appeared.
It was an email from the independent trustee.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: TRUST ACTIVATION AND BENEFICIARY DISPUTE.*
I opened it.
The trustee had received a formal objection to the inheritance.
The objection claimed that Nia had concealed information about the baby's biological father and that the trust should remain frozen until paternity could be independently established.
Attached was a sworn statement.
The signature belonged to my mother.
But the final paragraph was signed by another witness.
Someone who claimed to have known Nia long before she met me.
I read the name.
Then I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
*Camille Carter.*
My wife's sister had just signed a sworn statement questioning the paternity of our unborn child.
I called Nia immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
"Marcus?""
I struggled to find the words.
"Sweetheart, we have a problem.""
"What happened?""
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at the document.
"Your sister has filed a statement against us.""
There was a long silence.
Then Nia whispered:
"That's impossible. Camille knows the truth.""
I swallowed.
"What truth?""
Nia's voice broke.
"The reason I was so afraid when your mother first mentioned the DNA test.""
I gripped the phone.
"Nia, what are you saying?""
She began crying.
Then she said:
May you like
"Marcus, there's something about the baby's conception that I never told you.""
And before I could ask another question, the call disconnected.
