Chapter 6 - What Really Happened To My MotherRichard came back to Nashville with us.

For the first time, I had both sides of my family sitting at the same table.
Amy.
Frederick.
Richard.
Eleanor.
And me.
The people I had spent my entire life believing were strangers…
Were suddenly the only people who knew the truth.
Richard opened an old box.
Inside were photographs.
My mother pregnant.
My mother holding me.
My mother standing beside Richard.
Then a photograph of Teresa.
Standing behind them.
Watching.
Richard pointed at it.
“She knew about us.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
“Then why didn't she expose us?”
“Because she wanted something.”
“What?”
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother's trust.”
My mother had inherited money from her family.
Teresa knew about it.
She also knew the money would eventually pass to me.
But she couldn't access it while my mother was alive.
So she started manipulating Arthur.
She convinced him that Richard was dangerous.
That my mother was cheating.
That their marriage was failing.
She created fake letters.
Fake financial records.
Fake evidence.
And eventually…
Arthur believed her.
But my mother discovered the deception.
She confronted Teresa.
According to Richard, they had a violent argument.
My mother threatened to expose everything.
Teresa threatened her back.
Then three days later…
My mother died.
Officially, it was an accident.
Unofficially…
Richard believed she had been pushed.
I couldn't breathe.
“What happened to the investigation?”
“Arthur stopped it.”
My hands curled into fists.
“My own father?”
Richard nodded.
“He loved you.”
I looked at him.
“That doesn't excuse him.”
“No.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“It doesn't.”
Then Eleanor spoke.
“There is one thing we haven't considered.”
“What?”
“Teresa wasn't acting alone.”
I looked at her.
“Mason?”
“No.”
She reached for another photograph.
A group of people stood outside my grandfather's company.
At the center was Teresa.
Beside her was Arthur.
Beside Arthur was Richard.
And at the edge…
A young man.
I recognized him.
My uncle.
But he had died when I was a teenager.
Eleanor pointed to him.
“He was the person who created the first shell company.”
“Why?”
“To hide your inheritance.”
My attorney examined the photograph.
Then he went pale.
“Wait.”
“What?”
He pointed to the young man.
“This isn't your uncle.”
I stared.
“What?”
He enlarged the photograph.
The man looked similar.
But different.
Then Richard whispered:
“That's Thomas Bradley.”
“Who?”
“Your grandfather's illegitimate son.”
I felt dizzy.
“Does he have heirs?”
Richard nodded.
“A daughter.”
Eleanor looked at me.
“Teresa's lawyer.”
I froze.
“Her lawyer?”
“Yes.”
The woman who had been handling Teresa's legal affairs for years…
Was secretly related to my family.
And suddenly the entire scheme made sense.
They weren't trying to steal only my house.
They were trying to rewrite the family inheritance.
And the person helping them had access to every legal document I owned.
My attorney stood.
“We need to move quickly.”
“Why?”
“Because if they're trying to challenge the trust…”
He looked at Frederick.
“They may go after your son next.”
I looked toward the nursery.
Frederick was sleeping peacefully.
I felt something change inside me.
The fear disappeared.
What replaced it was anger.
No one was going to touch my son.
Not Teresa.
Not Mason.
Not anyone.
I picked up the deed.
Then I looked at Richard.
“You spent thirty years running from them.”
He nodded.
“I'm done running.”
I turned toward Amy.
“We're going to end this.”
She took my hand.
“How?”
I looked at the documents.
“We find the original trust.”
Richard's expression changed.
“Connor…”
“What?”
“There is only one place it could be.”
“Where?”
He looked toward my mother's old house.
“The house Teresa has been afraid to enter for thirty years.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
Richard's voice dropped.
“Because your mother hid the original evidence there.”
A pause.
“And she left something specifically for you.”
That night, we drove to the abandoned house.
The front door was still locked.
The windows were covered.
Dust covered everything.
But when Richard handed me an old brass key…
The lock opened.
Inside was a small room.
A wooden desk.
A broken lamp.
And a photograph of my mother.
On the desk was an envelope.
My name was written across it.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my blood run cold:
Connor, if you are reading this, Teresa has finally come for your family.
And underneath it was a second sentence:
But she has made one mistake.
She believes Frederick is only your son.
May you like
He is also the legal heir to everything she spent thirty years trying to steal.
