Chapter 4: The Baby in the Photograph

“Before you decide what happens to Elena, you need to know who that baby really was.””

Sarah's words hung over the ballroom like a warning.

I stood beside the untouched wedding cake, my wedding ring resting on the tablecloth, while three hundred guests watched my family come apart. The crystal chandeliers glittered above us. Waiters had stopped carrying champagne. Even the security officers had gone quiet.

I looked down at the photograph again.

Elena was younger in it, but unmistakable. Her arm rested around Michael Carter's shoulders. Between them, a baby slept beneath a yellow blanket, one tiny hand curled around a silver bracelet.

“Sarah,” I said, “tell me who that child was.””

She opened her mouth, but Elena interrupted.

“Don't listen to her. She's trying to turn a family tragedy into a weapon.””

Sarah turned toward her.

“A family tragedy? Is that what you called it when you told me Michael had abandoned his child?””

Elena's eyes narrowed.

“You know nothing about my relationship with my brother.””

“I know what Michael told me.””

“You never even met him!””

“I did.””

Elena went completely still.

I stepped closer to Sarah.

“When?””

“Four months after I left your house.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

“You met Michael four months after you disappeared?””

“I didn't disappear, Daniel. I was forced out.””

Sarah's voice trembled, but she continued.

“I was living in a small apartment outside Charlotte. I was working two jobs and trying to keep Leo in school. One afternoon, a man knocked on my door.

He said his name was Michael Carter. He told me he knew why your mother had separated us.””

Martha's face hardened.

“You should have sent him away.””

Sarah looked at her.

“You were already controlling my life from hundreds of miles away. You told my landlord I was unstable. You called my employer and said I was involved in a custody dispute. You even contacted Leo's school.””

“I was protecting my grandson.””

“You were trying to make sure I had nowhere to go.””

Leo squeezed my hand.

I looked down at him, then back at my mother.

“Is that true?””

Martha adjusted the emerald bracelet on her wrist.

“Sarah was making poor decisions. Someone had to think about the child.””

“You mean someone had to think about what you wanted,” I said.

Her eyes flashed.

“Watch your tone, Daniel.””

For once, I didn't.

Sarah reached for the photograph.

“Michael showed me this picture. He said the baby had been the center of a dispute that began before you ever met Elena.””

I stared at the child.

“What dispute?””

“Michael believed Elena had hidden the baby's identity from their father. He had spent years trying to prove that the family records had been altered.””

Elena let out a bitter laugh.

“My brother was obsessed with conspiracies. He thought everyone was stealing something from him.””

“Then why did you panic when Daniel saw the photograph?”” Sarah asked.

Elena's laughter stopped.

“Because that photograph was never supposed to leave my mother's house.””

A murmur swept through the guests.

I turned toward her.

“Your mother's house?””

Elena pressed her lips together.

Martha moved between us.

“This conversation is over.””

“No,” I said.

“It's just beginning.””

One of the security officers approached.

“Mr. Miller, we've contacted the authorities. They'll be here shortly.””

“Thank you. Please make sure the evidence stays untouched.””

Elena looked toward the doors.

“You're actually calling the police on your own mother?””

“I'm asking them to document what happened. If nobody has done anything wrong, there should be nothing to fear.””

She stared at me as though she'd never heard me speak before.

Perhaps she hadn't.

For most of our relationship, I'd been the man who solved problems with money, trusted people who spoke confidently, and avoided confrontations that threatened my peace.

Elena had learned to use that weakness.

So had Martha.

Sarah opened the folded DNA report.

“The baby in the photograph was a girl,” she said.

“Michael told me she had been raised under a different name. He said the paperwork had been changed after her birth.””

I glanced at Elena.

“Where is she now?””

“I don't know,” Sarah answered.

“Michael said he had found her, but he wouldn't tell me her name until he could verify everything.””

“Why would he involve you?””

“Because he knew what your mother had done to me. He said if anyone understood what it felt like to have your identity rewritten by someone with money and influence, it was me.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

I looked at the DNA report.

“Does this prove who the baby was?””

“It establishes a biological relationship between the people identified in the report,” Sarah said carefully.

“But I haven't read every page. Michael told me to bring it to you only when I had the letters and the recording.””

Elena suddenly reached across the table.

“Give me that report!””

I caught her wrist before she could grab it.

She jerked away.

“Don't touch me!””

“Then stop reaching for evidence.””

Her eyes filled with tears, but her expression was furious.

“You have no idea what you've just destroyed.””

I stared at her.

“My marriage?””

“Your entire family!””

Martha seized Elena's arm.

“Enough. You're making it worse.””

Elena turned on her.

“You told me he would never find out!””

Martha's grip tightened.

“And I told you to keep your mouth shut.””

The guests gasped.

For a moment, the two women seemed to forget the room around them. Their carefully constructed alliance was crumbling faster than either could repair it.

I stepped toward them.

“How long have you been working together?””

Neither answered.

I tried again.

“Was it before Sarah and I divorced?””

Martha's silence was an answer.

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

Elena looked at the doors again, then at the guests, calculating. Her eyes settled on Leo.

“Daniel, think about what this is doing to your son. He shouldn't have to remember his wedding day as the day his father humiliated everyone.””

Leo stepped behind Sarah.

I saw the fear in his face.

That was enough.

“Don't use my son to protect yourself.””

Elena recoiled.

Sarah pulled Leo close and kissed his forehead.

Then she reached into the backpack and removed another envelope, this one smaller than the others.

“Michael gave me this shortly before he stopped answering my calls,” she said.

My chest tightened.

“Stopped answering?””

“He was supposed to meet me two weeks ago. He never came. His apartment had been emptied, and his phone was disconnected.””

Martha's expression changed.

It was brief, almost invisible.

But I saw it.

“You know something,” I said.

She shook her head.

“Daniel, don't be ridiculous.””

I held her gaze.

“You recognized his name before Sarah even explained anything. You've been frightened since she opened that backpack. Now she says Michael disappeared, and you look like someone just confirmed a suspicion.””

Martha's lips pressed into a thin line.

Sarah handed me the envelope.

“There's one thing Michael wrote on the outside. He told me not to open it unless you were there.””

I turned it over.

There was a single handwritten sentence.

Daniel, if my sister is at your wedding, ask your mother what happened to the first Miller heir.

I read it twice.

Then I slowly raised my eyes toward Martha.

“The first Miller heir?””

My mother looked at the photograph.

For the first time that night, she appeared genuinely old.

May you like

And when she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.

“Michael should have stayed buried.””
