Chapter 9 - SOPHIA'S TWO CHILDREN

Sophia arrived at the hospital just before dawn.

The police escorted her inside.

When she entered my father's room, she stopped.

Her eyes went directly to me.

Then to Noah.

Then to Ethan.

She began crying.

I stood.

“You knew.”

Sophia nodded.

“I knew you were alive.”

“You knew I was your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your father asked me not to.”

I looked at my father.

He closed his eyes.

Sophia continued.

“When you were born, I was told you had died.”

“By whom?”

“Charles.”

“Why?”

“To make me disappear.”

“What about Noah?”

“I was told he had died too.”

I shook my head.

“Then who took us?”

“Your father.”

“He switched us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect us.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Sophia walked toward me.

“You have every right to hate us.”

“I don't hate you.”

She stopped.

“I don't?”

“No.”

I looked at Noah.

“I just hate that you let me believe I was alone.”

Sophia cried.

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Why didn't you search for him?”

“I did.”

“For seven years?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

“Then why couldn't you find him?”

“Because Evelyn hid him.”

Evelyn had hidden both children.

One in plain sight.

One far away.

She had manipulated everyone.

But there was another question.

“Why did you come back now?”

Sophia looked at my father.

“Because the trust was about to activate.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

She explained.

“Your grandfather created a condition.”

“What condition?”

“When the youngest heir turned eighteen.”

I froze.

“Ethan?”

“No.”

She looked at Noah.

“Noah.”

“He's seven.”

“Yes.”

“Then why now?”

“Because someone changed the trigger.”

“Who?”

“Charles.”

I felt cold.

“He accelerated it.”

“Why?”

“To force the heirs together.”

Sophia looked at Daniel.

“That's why he manipulated your husband.”

Daniel looked away.

“He used me.”

“Yes.”

Sophia continued.

“He wanted Daniel to bring the family together.”

“Why?”

“To activate the trust.”

“And then?”

“He planned to take control.”

I looked at my father.

“Can he?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you are the final key.”

I hated that phrase.

“The final key.”

My father nodded.

“You have all four bloodlines.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

“You carry Sophia's blood.”

“You carry your father's.”

“You are connected to the original trust.”

“And Ethan?”

“Your biological son.”

“And Noah?”

“Sophia's son.”

“And Daniel?”

“David's son.”

I looked at all of them.

Four people.

Four bloodlines.

One family.

One impossible inheritance.

Then Sophia reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small wooden box.

“I found this in your grandfather's study.”

She opened it.

Inside was a ring.

My grandmother's ring.

I recognized it.

I had seen it in old photographs.

Sophia handed it to me.

“Your grandfather gave this to me the night before you were born.”

I touched it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

I unfolded it.

Only one sentence.

THE HEIR WHO CHOOSES FAMILY WILL RECEIVE EVERYTHING.

I looked at Sophia.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the trust isn't about blood.”

“What?”

“It's about choice.”

I didn't understand.

Sophia explained.

“Your grandfather knew his family would fight over money.”

“So he created a test.”

“Yes.”

“What test?”

“Each heir must voluntarily give up control.”

I stared.

“To whom?”

“No one.”

“What happens then?”

“The trust dissolves.”

“All the money?”

“Transferred to the foundation.”

I understood.

My grandfather had created the ultimate test.

If his descendants chose wealth, the family would destroy itself.

If they chose each other, the fortune would become something useful.

David entered the room under police escort.

He heard the last part.

He laughed.

“You think you'll give away billions?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He stared.

“You'd throw away your inheritance?”

“No.”

I held the ring.

“I'd change it.”

David shook his head.

“Your grandfather would never allow that.”

I smiled.

“You don't know my grandfather.”

Then another person entered.

Charles.

His hands were cuffed.

He looked at me.

“You finally understand.”

I stared at him.

“You planned all of this.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted the trust.”

“You could have had money.”

“I wanted control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

He smiled.

“And I still might.”

A police officer stepped forward.

Charles suddenly pulled something from his pocket.

A small remote.

He pressed it.

The hospital lights flickered.

A screen in the room turned on.

A countdown appeared.

00:59:59

I stared.

“What is that?”

Charles smiled.

“The trust activation.”

The countdown began.

59:58.

59:57.

Charles looked at me.

“You have one hour.”

“For what?”

“To choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Your family.”

He laughed.

“Or your fortune.”

The screen displayed four names.

EMILY.

NOAH.

ETHAN.

DANIEL.

Then a fifth appeared.

DAVID.

And beneath it:

ONE MUST BE REMOVED.

I stared.

Charles smiled.

“Only four can inherit.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I stepped toward the screen.

“We're not playing this game.”

Charles laughed.

“You already are.”

I looked at Noah.

Then Ethan.

Then Daniel.

Then Sophia.

And finally my father.

I knew what I had to do.

But before I could speak, the screen changed.

A final name appeared.

SOPHIA.

And beneath it:

ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY.

Sophia gasped.

May you like

Charles smiled.

“Now choose.”
