Chapter 7: The Brother My Family Erased
For several seconds, I couldn't understand the words coming out of my mother's mouth.
“Ethan isn't your cousin. He's your brother.””
The cabin seemed to shrink around me.
I turned toward Ethan.
He wasn't looking at me.
He was staring at the floor, his jaw clenched, as if he'd been waiting years for this moment and still hadn't found the courage to face it.
“Tell me she's lying,” I whispered.
Ethan closed the wooden box.
“Claire—”
“Tell me she's lying!””
He finally looked at me.
“She's not.””
I took a step backward.
“No. That's impossible.””
“Your father was my father, too.””
I shook my head.
“My father had two daughters. My mother told me he had a brother named Michael. She told me Michael died before I was born.””
“Michael did die,” Ethan said quietly.
“But I wasn't his son.””
I looked at the photograph on the table.
The young man standing beside Dad.
The handwritten words on the back.
Michael's boy. Summer 2001.
“You told me you were Michael's son.””
“That's what everyone was told.””
“Why?””
Ethan glanced toward the door.
“Because your mother wanted it that way.””
A sharp knock interrupted us.
“Claire!”” my mother called.
“Open the door.””
I ignored her.
I was trying to breathe.
“Start from the beginning,” I told Ethan.
He pulled a chair away from the table.
“My mother was named Rebecca. She worked for your grandfather's company. She and your father met when he was twenty-four. They were together for a while before he married your mother.””
I felt sick.
“Dad had an affair?””
Ethan didn't defend him.
“Yes.””
“And you were born?””
“Three years before you.””
I looked at the floor.
My father had carried this secret for decades.
My mother had known.
And somehow, everyone had decided I was the one who didn't deserve to know.
“Did Olivia know?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don't think so.””
“Why would Mom pretend you were Michael's son?””
“Because Michael had died, and your grandfather was willing to recognize me as part of the family under that arrangement. Your mother agreed to keep the truth buried.””
I stared at him.
“Why would she agree?””
“Because your father was terrified of losing you.””
I let out a bitter laugh.
“So he kept another child hidden to protect his marriage?””
“Something like that.””
The door shook under another knock.
“Claire, this is ridiculous!”” my mother shouted.
I walked toward it.
Ethan caught my arm.
“Don't open it until you know what you're dealing with.””
I pulled free.
“She raised me. Whatever happened, I deserve to hear it from her.””
I opened the door.
My mother stood on the porch with Daniel beside her.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
Her cheeks were red from the cold, and her eyes were swollen.
“Claire,” she said.
I stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Daniel entered first.
He immediately noticed the wooden box on the table.
His expression tightened.
“Where did you find that?””
“Exactly where my father told me to look.””
He glanced at Ethan.
“You shouldn't be here.””
Ethan crossed his arms.
“Neither should you.””
Daniel placed the leather folder on the table.
“Claire, we need to discuss the documents.””
I laughed.
“Of course we do. Everyone seems very interested in what my father left behind.””
My mother removed her gloves.
“Please let me explain.””
I looked directly at her.
“Is Ethan my brother?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer came so quietly that it almost disappeared beneath the wind outside.
I felt something break inside me.
“How long have you known?””
“Since before you were born.””
“And you let me grow up thinking he was some distant cousin?””
Margaret began crying.
“Your father begged me not to tell you.””
“That's not an answer.””
“He was afraid you would hate him.””
I stared at her.
“So instead, you decided I should never know?””
She reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“Did you know Dad kept seeing Rebecca?””
My mother shook her head.
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“When Ethan was a baby.””
I looked at Ethan.
He stood completely still.
“Did Dad visit you?””
Ethan nodded.
“Sometimes.””
“Did he love you?””
His eyes softened.
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“Did he love me?””
Ethan didn't hesitate.
“Yes. He loved you both.””
I looked at the photograph again.
All those years, I had thought my father was simply a man who worked too much, traveled occasionally, and spent most of his free time worrying about his daughters.
I had never imagined he had another life.
A knock sounded against the table.
Daniel had opened his folder.
“Regardless of the family situation, we need to address the trust.””
I turned toward him.
“Not now.””
“Unfortunately, it can't wait.””
He slid a document across the table.
It was a proposed settlement agreement.
The terms were simple.
I would transfer my lodge into Bennett Mountain Holdings LLC. In exchange, I would receive $450,000.
Olivia would receive management rights.
My mother would retain control of the trust.
Northstar would acquire the mineral rights.
I stared at the numbers.
“Four hundred and fifty thousand?””
Daniel nodded.
“It's a generous offer.””
I looked at him.
“My property alone is worth more than that.””
“The transaction includes additional considerations.””
“Such as?””
He leaned forward.
“Your family would avoid prolonged litigation.””
I almost laughed.
“You're threatening to sue me unless I give away my house?””
“I'm explaining the consequences.””
Ethan stepped between us.
“Daniel, the original trust agreement gives Claire authority over any sale.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Only if the beneficiary designation is valid.””
Ethan opened the first folder.
“It's valid.””
Daniel glanced at the document.
Then he looked at the second folder.
His face changed.
“What else did you find?””
I noticed his reaction.
He wasn't worried about the trust.
He was worried about something else.
Ethan reached into the wooden box and removed a folded page.
“This,” he said, “is the original beneficiary schedule.””
Daniel stood abruptly.
“You cannot use that document.””
“Why?””
“Because it was superseded.””
“By a forged amendment?””
My mother gasped.
I turned toward Daniel.
“What amendment?””
Ethan placed two documents side by side.
The original.
And the amended version.
The original listed three beneficiaries.
My father.
Michael.
And Thomas Reed's estate.
The amended document removed Michael and added Olivia.
But there was something else.
A handwritten note beside my father's name.
*Trustee succession: Claire Bennett upon reaching age thirty-five.*
I stared at it.
“My thirty-fifth birthday is next month.””
Ethan nodded.
“Your father wanted you to take control when you were old enough to understand the responsibility.””
Daniel quickly gathered his papers.
“This conversation is over.””
I stepped in front of him.
“No. It's just beginning.””
He looked at me.
“Be careful, Claire. You don't know what your father was involved in.””
I held his gaze.
“Then explain it.””
For the first time, Daniel looked frightened.
He turned toward my mother.
“Margaret, tell her.””
My mother shook her head.
“Not here.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“Now!””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
My mother finally spoke.
“Your father didn't just discover the forged trust amendment.””
She took a trembling breath.
“He discovered that someone had been stealing money from it for twenty years.””
May you like
Then she pointed directly at Daniel.
“And he knew exactly who was responsible.””
